Since when is The Rona a right wing buzzword? My super lefty echo chamber has been using that since the beginning.

I don't think of "the Rona" as a partisan buzzword, but someone that goes in and tweets about how it "triggers the left" is probably a douche.

I am a dumbass American, so I'm only vaguely aware of UK politics tho.

For real.

The Houston240sx forums, along with Zilvia, I think, were fairly good forums. But after I sold the 240 and bought my MS3 I've been very disappointed with that car community.

The Mazdaspeedforums were garbage and had an annual pay wall, and the Facebook group is full of chuds that like "crackle tunes" and sharing photos of their seven different guns posed on their seat and dash.

I guess this is what comes with cars becoming cheaper and more accessible to people with disposable income, but man are they not fun to interact with.

I figured it was more a byproduct of driving social media engagement. People with completely different backgrounds are being heavily mixed now, rather than just those that are nerdy enough to search out a specific car model forum, register, post, etc.

The social media poo poo isn't easily publicly indexed or curated as heavily as things were in the forum golden age so we're eventually going to look back on this time period as some kind of dark age with respect to missing content.

Anyway, this is just my own terrible opinion.

We called it the Rona/Roni (and Corona-chan) on these very forums, you could argue that giving it a cute nickname has the effect of minimizing the threat, but it's definitely not a right-wing name that the guy should made a big deal of.

I hate being part of the tuning/enthusiast industry really. It inevitably means having to nod along and pretend you agree that the environment is stupid and the government is evil for trying to protect it at the expense of Your Freedom.

I was hoping there was some truth to the idea that we could bridge over to a post-ICE age when classic musclecars and supercars could exist free of restrictions because there would be so few of them as to not have any appreciable effect on anything; but it looks like the coal-rolling mentality is going to dig in its heels and not go away quietly, so either it'll be a blanket ban on everything or they'll just win and we'll be driving mandatory F-150s forever.

Yeah there's a local car blog I follow that does some weird car reviews, keeps up to date about track events etc, but whenever EVs or sustainability comes up, it turns into the dumbest cesspool imaginable. Let's solve traffic by building more lanes! Or privatizing the roads (regardless of what you think about privatization in general, how is that gonna help?)! The EU is coming to get our cars! They didn't ban horses 100 years ago :smugbert:, and a total inability to consider EVs as a viable transportation, even 15 years out.

I just don't get it. I'm probably more of a car nerd than 90% of the posters there, but I'd be happy if we got 25% of drivers onto bikes, 25% into public transport, and 90% of the remaining cars into EVs. If I could buy the last ICE in 2035, it would easily last the rest of my driving career if I wanted. But I'm not even sure I would; none of the latest premium models which are bigger, heavier, uglier and slightly faster excite me in the slightest really. No Cayman GT4 would be a bit of a shame, but 99% of the garbage on the roads can be easily replaced with Leafs.

I was considering writing an op-ed for them but then realized it would be a huge waste of time and would probably get me banned for life :v:

The EPA doesn't want a bunch of assholes driving without catalytic converters. Surprise! I'm pretty sure NASCAR and Formula 1 all run some type of cat, right? The only auto racing I've been to where it was obvious the cars were catless was the X Games rally cross back in 2007.

This has been bugging me for years. I have distinct memories of being rather proud of being able to come up with the exact right search terms to find things quickly years ago, and now, it's all either erroneous spell-correcting or targeted ads every time I search.

I get how we got here, but drat, we need to fix this, because it is so much harder to find good info now.

Yeah I don't think there's going to be any sudden banning of ICE performance car sales, new ICE cars will probably just keep getting worse and more loaded down with gadgets and unreliable crap to the point where the 'car enthusiast' doesn't really have any new-car options anyway. Seems pretty clear that the constantly declining rate of profit is pushing mass-market vehicle manufacturers into cost savings measures that will inevitably suck all of the interest out of new cars regardless of any legislation. Things like aformentioned infotainment systems and unreliable gizmos, having to build 20 different types of car on a single platform to justify the development, having to fit the same powertrain components into a dozen different models of car again to justify development costs, it all points towards new cars getting more and more similar to each other and less of what somebody who enjoys driving might like.

Ahahahhaha Honda tech is the worst and any other Honda forum makes it look good by comparison.

Add in "I searched but all the links and photos are dead please help" being the last post in a 20 page post chain that's 15 years old and I wound up going down a wrong brakes rabbit hole.

I was wondering about that, my wife doesn't care about cars at all and even she commented that we've been "hearings cars that sound like they're about to break" a lot more. I wasn't sure how much of it is going from being away from home 10.5+ hrs a day to working from home though, but there a few cars near me with that tune, an obnoxious exhaust, and a driver who seems to have been learning how to drive a manual for over a year and it's really annoying.

Is that something your average smog station can even check? Seems like it would be very vehicle dependent but I don't know. It also doesn't seem to be hard to get around, I'm pretty sure most people in California know someone who knows someone who will pass you for extra money. My retired buddy who drives a RAV4 Prime even has a hookup, I can't imagine it's hard for someone involved in the tuning scene.
