It is kind of cool that the universe let us see what would have happened had Jon Jones gotten the career trajectory he deserved, but it kind of sucks that it still involves him being rich, famous and popular beyond his wildest dreams and largely shielded from the consequences of his worst action

Being born in Dagestan under the same circumstances as anyone there I wonder if any of us would have different views than his? Where you are from is gonna shape your world view.

He's not out punching old men in bars and throwing dollies at buses, or threatening to kill anyone. The worst I've seen is he paid that homeless guy to do pushups years ago then apologized for it. Otherwise publicly anyway it's mostly been class.

I know my management talked with Kevin Holland and he actually reached out to me. He’s the only guy that reached out to me personally and was like, ‘Who said I was ducking?’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know, the managers talked and it didn’t sound like it was the direction they wanted to go.’ He was like, ‘No, no, no, let me handle my business and I’ll step up and do my thing.’ That guy, respect to him, he’s the man. He’s the only guy, I’m assuming, that wanted something that’s interesting, so we’ll see if that comes later.

“I know Jack Hermansson didn’t want it. I know a lot of guys in the division, the top-ranked [guys] didn’t want it.”

The threats aren't really political in nature, keep in mind that all these republics are just part of Russia, there's complete freedom to travel, Makhachkala is 3 hours away from Grozny...think of it like someone going from NYC to Baltimore.

Southpaugh posted:

What makes you think he's any less or more cool than Khabib? I mean sure he's probably more fun to watch fight, and he's got silly hair and he looks like Lincoln, but I suspect a lot of his good impression is just that he keeps his mouth shut. It's possible that sending him to a kung fu boarding school or whatever did somewhat protect him from getting too deep in their traditions but somehow I doubt it.

Though if there are interviews out there showing him express progressive opinions I'd love to see them, maybe I'm just uninformed.

It's not, which is why he didn't do that, but some random troll on the internet using his picture did.

My question was toward why Khabib might choose to hang out or avoid Kadyrov. If the three hours' proximity somehow obligates him to pay tribute in any sense.

Yeah, my understanding is that Dagestan's leader keeps changing and is usually some random Putin-installed puppet, so Kadyrov kind of becomes de facto cultural leader in the region.

It's possible that if Kadyrov asks Khabib to hang out, Khabib can just say no and nothing bad will happen, it's also possible that something really bad happens. Hell, I can totally see a situation where Kadyrov might not give a gently caress but public perception gets formed that Khabib pissed him off and got on his bad side, and some random rear end in a top hat could take things in to their own hands in an attempt to gain influence(money) for themselves. That's some literal Russian roulette though.

Kadyrov murdered a dissident in Germany (and tried to murder another). He was probably behind the murder of Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, which took place in Russia and likely without Putin's approval. When Fedor expressed mild concern over his child fighting club, Kadyrov's goons showed up to threaten Fedor's daughter. The man's an absolute blood drenched psycho and I don't blame anyone in his vicinity for holding their tongue.

Bloody Elbow had an interesting piece on the split which seems to have formed between Nurmagomedov and Kadyrov though: https://www.bloodyelbow.com/2021/5/18/22440668/khabib-nurmagomedov-ramzan-kadyrov-imam-shamil-chechnya-mma-politics-feature

An interesting theory, is that Nurmagomedov's retirement is an excuse for him to gracefully remove himself from Kadyrov's orbit. I wouldn't know, but if he did want to do such a thing, then this would probably be the best way to go about it.

Watched some interviews with his mentor, and his school was one of the few alternatives to a school backed by wahhabi islam (saudi money ofc), so yes, by default, he is cooler. I would not expect him to have a pleasant opinion about gay people for example though.

drat. I don't care about him as a fighter much, but to lose a fight between top-15 fighters should never result in a cut.

Like, the UFC should informally have to tiers of fighters, poo poo maybe even explictly, the way that euro football leagues function, and non-contract expiration cuts should happen only from the lower tier. In a case like this, ok, so he went 1-2 against Chris Weidman, Tom Breese, and Brad Tavares. Throw him against, idk, Jun Yon Park, and if he loses that to go LWLL, fine, cut him.

But the UFC needs those gatekeeper fighters who people vaguely recognize, especially in 185+. A guy who is 9-5-1 is a resource in limited supply, and who can serve to build a fighter much more effectively than a guy who is 2-3. Yet another problem with UFC matchmaking. Now that I think about it, he and Tavares should have never been matched up against each other anyway. When a dude passes 10 UFC fights with a ~.600 record he should be exclusively fighting opponents who are like 3-0 4-0 5-1 5-2. Like, why didn't Akhmedov fight Shahbazyan instead? That would be an excellent fight, right now from a talent development perspective, a prospect showcase perspective, and a rankings justification perspective.

Remember when Jon Jones beat up Stefan Bonnar, Brandon Vera, and Vladmir Matyushenko? It made people notice because we were able to say "drat Jones beat up a guy who I kinda know he might be kinda good"

So he and his camp are at fault, as they proceeded with the fight knowing the potential injury/risk. That makes the loss a non-fluke, as the result was a known possibility.
If the UFC also knew, I wouldn't be surprised if they pressured him to fight anyway as delaying the "biggest PPV EVAR!" wasn't good for the investors/Dana's 5th pool.
