i worked as an analyst for many years in a company with an agile software dev group and, while yeah the ever-changing requirements of projects can be frustrating, it was far better than the previous waterfall alternative

Kanban specifically was from Toyota, and it's the only "agile" approach I've implemented. It was really needed at the time and helped a lot, but then I dropped it like a hot potato when that particular project was done.

Kanban predates Agile by several decades, and you can tell, because it's actually useful and used where it should be, as opposed to Agile which is currently trendy and being used in places that it shouldn't. I don't disagree that an Agile process might work in some places, but it is currently being used completely inappropriately because it is fashionable.

I am on an "Agile" project at the moment, and it is stultifyingly slow and cripplingly bureacratic, because the project we are working on is not just a pure IT problem, and is being managed by salespeople who don't really understand what Agile is supposed to look like.

My job is essentially to function as a human script function to move numbers manually between three terrible database systems that don't talk to each other. I'm constantly aware of the fact that in a sane universe my job would not and should not exist, and it definitely doesn't make me feel great about doing it. At least we moved to Office 365 during COVID so I don't have to spend half my day waiting for someone else to finish editing one of the dozens of Excel files we used that were stored on a network drive so that I can edit it. We still use Excel files for everything in ways that contravene the laws of both gods and men but at least they're in the cloud now and can be edited simultaneously by multiple people.

Hi, you and I are in the same boat. Welcome to hell with me. Except like, 80% of our stuff is not cloud enabled and the setup for the other 20% is hosed and sync failures are constant.
I've offered to fix issues with our system that in a sane world would likely result in at least one job getting cut (possibly mine) because it's manual work that never needed to be manual, but my manager is so terrified of anything I do independently under another department head's direct instruction & responsibility "coming back on him" that changing the processes at all is not allowed even if I can demonstrate that I've fixed the issue and tested it in our test environment enough to find any holes in it. Nothing can change. Period.
So I'm a human import script and it is seriously weighing on me by now.

Hate to keep the thread on about PM methodologies but I think it's just important to note that the vast majority of companies trying to use them are doing so with 1) an incomplete understanding of how they work and 2) going against their guidelines the second they ask people to go against the way things have always been done, so the whole exercise is just meaningless.

At my last job the CEO got really obsessed with SCRUM for like, three weeks and would even be tossing around a rugby ball on zoom calls to get everyone in the mood. Then we had to lay off 40% of the company, any mention of scrum was dropped entirely, and for the rest of my time there the rugby ball could be seen just abandoned in the corner of his basement. I could never not fixate on it.

Depends on the system. Mine is hamstrung by a process that requires a specific manual input to deal with errors that occur at random, potentially several dozen times, and that automation tools don't recognize the conditions for (I've tried). Sometimes it could be very straightforward to do. And of course sometimes it's like our second database where it's just completely incapable of mass entry and the UI is set up in a way where AHK or anything else won't do the job either.

(I've tried to get that error fixed. The cause has been found. The solution has been found. The revised code to make the solution work is already known. I don't have admin access to the system and cannot make any serverside changes, and "getting around the 'unfixable' errors" is part of this branch's sole IT guy's "only I can do this" job security. gently caress I hate this guy.)

As people are alluding to that's Lean.

I can't tell if Lean Six Sigma had become an also ran and everyone who was gonna do it has done it, or if GBS is such a concentration of computer toucher and computer toucher adjacent but there's awfully little complaints about Lean Six Sigma in here.

I have warned before that if your company is changing management systems like a coat and cant commit, the problem is the company, not the systems. If you can pick one, any one, even if it doesn't have a trendy name, and stick to it you're usually a world class company just from the repeatability of everything you do.

I just couldn’t stay awake today and had to sleep in until 11:00AM and then again from 1:00 to 4:00. I had my phone on and took a few calls (“No. Refresh your page. You see it now? Okay no problem, bye”) and answered a few emails but mostly slept. Thank god we don’t have to visit customers right now, just the occasional phone call. One of the worst parts of my job was having to drive out and talk to them, I pray to god we just stay 100% remote on that as a cost saving measure.

I think I would have melted down about a month ago in his place, but he just keeps chugging along and does his best not to take it out on anyone else. He's a trooper for sure. :smith:

On Monday the floor boss disclosed to the plant at large that we have enough differential motors to keep building all our most popular and profitable machines through August 1. The manufacturer of these motors is now quoting a 30+ week lead time for a custom engineered motor that only this manufacturer has the tools/specs to build. We're going to go under before year's end (this last is my guess, not something he said).

Oh, and our owning company got bought out by "Platinum Equity" earlier this week, so there goes any hope of dying a quiet and dignified death. Manufacturing is hosed and only getting worse.
