Except for shops that have some legacy Z/OS mainframe or iSeries system that they are desperately trying to migrate off of.

I'm looking at a Facebook ad for a Mac Plus with a "Hard Disk 20" (not SCSI) drive and a printer, apparently everything works except for the floppy eject mechanism, trying to decide if it's worth $160 or not... I'm kind of enamored of the idea of it as an over-elaborate serial terminal. What a loving fool I was for not acquiring these old Macs by the dozen in the early 2000s, when you could generally find one sitting on the curb if you drove around long enough on any given Saturday.

It made a great sound At one point I had a couple Mac plusses and SEs and I had a plan to appletalk them all together and have like terminals in different parts of the house where you could message other people and then cell phones happened.

My first interaction with Need For Speed was the Panasonic 3DO version. It was cool at the time, but yeah, that version ran at 15 FPS.

There's a particular smell that setup brings to me, and I'm not sure I can describe it. Eau de nostalgia?

Eau de electrolyte I've gotten pretty good at replacing those tiny smd capacitor cans on logic boards but I hate how complicated it is to swap out all the old perished caps in power supplies and analogue boards

I always assumed it was the smell of the fire inhibitors and dye in the plastic gassing off as your screen and case heats up.

I really didn't like it due to all the fuckery (enterprise) poo poo I had to learn to get it to do what I wanted. This was matched with a StorageWorks D4500 or something that has 12 Full Size SAS sockets. Not long after owning I relegated that to a door stop due to noise and power, and now it lives in a building at work doing server stuff while I make money leasing it to the company. At home now I have the StorageWorks by itself and the Mini-SAS SFF-8088 cable through a hole in the wall to my gaming PC that has the interface card installed in the PCIE. I can do whatever I want as far as torrents, gaming, managing server and have 5 concurrent Plex users at a time and I don't notice any issues.

Our "120TB on a budget" file server at work is a very similar setup - except that I could not really justify paying nearly thrice the price for HP certified drives-in-caddies, so it's just jammed full of off-the-shelf 8/10/12 TB SAS drives. This works fine, except that when you fill a storageworks chassis with drives but no ($100+ if you can even buy them) cryptographically signed HPE disk caddies, it turns every fan to 100% and holds them there. We keep it in an unused office, so whatever; it does work perfectly fine besides the angry vacuum cleaner noises, and has so far lasted well beyond any warranty. When we do replace it, I still think I'll try to find a chassis that either takes bare drives or has cheap and easily available caddies, though. I bought cheap chinese caddies, fans arent 100%. If I remove a drive though on the otherhand it loses it's mind.

I looked at that around the time I bought it, but at least back then the only third party caddies I could get were for the previous generation - supposedly because HPE had started signing the traffic between the temperature probe and the chassis. Now that you mention it I guess it's time to take another look; I'm sure some intrepid manufacturer has worked around that by now.

I'm all pissed off cos Chia miners have discovered the StorageWorks that are surplus and the price is rising. I'm about to expand to 24 drives and I am too cheap to pony up $200 now. I'll just keep an eye out for deals that sneak through

I feel like it's borderline retro still but I managed to get a free for a minor favour 15" PowerBook G4 early 2005 model, great condition, just a slight dent on one corner. 1.5 GHz G4, 1280x854 display, 512 MB of RAM. Slightly annoyingly it's much too new to boot OS 9, so I have Leopard installed now after learning more than I wanted to about OpenFirmware in order to USB boot the installer (while I do have a stack of dual layer DVD-RWs (didn't think they existed but that's what the label says?), I have no burner available) Tiger might be better since I can run Classic in that version, but it was enough of a pain getting Leopard on there that it can wait. Battery's completely shot, might have to give replacing the cells a try when I get home and can disassemble it properly and figure out what's inside. Looks like KingSpec PATA SSDs are the most plug and play solution for an SSD upgrade? And I suppose a FireWire external hard drive could be useful, firewire seems to be the preferred external storage interface in this era so might be easier to work with? longview has a new favorite as of 14:45 on Jul 28, 2021 |
