I'M CONCERNED ABOUT A NUMBER OF THINGS
https://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/earshot/lucky-dube/12903928

quote:

In 2005 a young entrepreneur took a risk and toured South African reggae star - Lucky Dube - to parts of Australia that don't usually see big name international acts.

Huge crowds came to see him in Alice Springs and Darwin, many travelling hundreds, even thousands, of kilometres from remote communities.

While he might have been relatively unknown across most of the country, in the remote Aboriginal communities of Central Australia Lucky Dube was “bigger than the Beatles”.

And he left a lasting legacy on the music of the Western Desert – desert reggae.

It led me to this 3 min video of Sharpies vs Mods in Melbourne in the sixties.

...Lucky Dube...

I was in Newcastle at a metal gig at the Cambridge and one of the bands playing was a death metal group from Alice Springs.

I asked the drummer, who was having a beer with us outside about 3 minutes after their touring van arrived, how well death metal goes down somewhere like Alice Springs and he explained that it didn't matter who you were, everyone would turn up regardless.
Rock, metal, hip hop, pop, country, whatever, people just went out to be entertained and generally, everyone got along. All you need in Alice Springs is to turn up, you market that poo poo and create some buzz and folk will roll in from a couple of hours away for a big bangin' Saturday night.

I wanna play in Alice Springs...

Australians were particularly racist towards Chinese immigrants for the longest time, and given the general level of racism here that's saying something.

Back in the early days of the Australian gold rush the government was passing specifically anti-Chinese legislation (such as the 1888 Chinese Restriction and Regulation Act) and there were so many anti-Chinese riots on the goldfields they actually had to appoint a special police commissioner in Victoria to oversee the issue. The Eureka Rebellion famously included a whole lot of immigrants among the rebels (the 13 ring leaders who were brought to trial included a Scottish Jew, a Jamaican and an African American) and pretty much the only group the rebels didn't include were the local Chinese miners because they hated them so much. The Eureka! stage musical weirdly attempted to whitewash the rebellion by including a scene where an Irish rebel realised at the last minute that a Chinese miner is his friend and ally.

Dan Andrews actually gave an official state apology to our Chinese community in 2017 for all the racism during the gold rush era: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-05-25/victoria-apologises-to-chinese-for-racism-during-gold-rush-era/8558998

So whats the reason there aren't many/or any(?) racist Japanese/Vietnamese named places? I thought from the deep Japanese hatred from WW2 there would be places named after them. Or was Australia far enough ahead at those times we didn't name things with racist intent?

I think it's just our big growth spurt happened during the gold rush era, by the time WW2 and Vietnam happened most places had already been given white fella names. I don't see much boomer animosity towards Vietnamese people but the 'greatest generation' sure as gently caress love being racist against the Japanese with plenty of slurs for sure

A (thankfully) distant boomer relative hated the Japanese until the day he died. He fought in Burma during WWII and may have been a POW. Got pissy when another relative bought a Toyota.
