MikeJF posted:It was pretty inevitable, she's set up and contracted as the main character and has to be the centre of everything and it was getting increasingly streched making her that without being captain so it'll probably work better now that she is. (and Saru's actor wanted to be in things less because of how oenerous the makeup job is) I mean, that's probably the most realistic thing Trek has ever done. Most officers will gently caress up horribly and then be promoted ahead of peers

Also, every time that redheaded ensign takes the helm everything goes immediately to poo poo because she needs to be written as a complete opposite of Burnham. ^^^^^^ Isn't that usually from captain to small-scale admiral, to put that person into some at home office building overseeing strategic reserves for office supplies and tea cupboards, instead of getting lost in the Pacific or invading the wrong island? Cage Kicker posted:Once they realized that Burnham was in fact the worst Starfleet officer of all time, they immediately began her fast track to Admiral Well, her career includes at least one mutiny, war trial and being saved from a life-sentence by a Terran infiltrator, a couple of disregards of direct order, who knows how many violations of temporal accords, several attacks against non-aligned world's diplomatic envoys etc... They should have made someone else the captain and keep her on the civilian track and become something akin to "mission specialist" which corresponds to a captain but isn't. She clearly has no respect for the command chain, nor towards the crew of her ship, but because of her plot shield she always ends up being right. So when Disco 4 fraps up she will be a rear admiral in charge of endangered wildlife, national parks and recreational planets, so that she can flunk off with her not-boyfriend to save the hypnotoads. And decide how to fill up that large hole where Book fell twice on a Arcturus 4, and next to Tilly's family farm to make it an recreational area.

Maybe it's a 5d chess move to introduct a new, less lovely character. She orders some very not Trek/federation bullshit and the new character starts a mutiny against her. They chuck her out the airlock and there is an immedate 50% reduction in crying while doing morally dubious stuff (the 2 things are. Unrelated of course. She has no issue with moral grey area). And then I woke up

FlamingLiberal posted:Disco has had exactly one good captain and his name is Christopher Pike Yes; Saru has all the good intentions but he is over his capabilities and is unable to see the big picture, Tilly just does not cut it (she basically handed over the Discovery by not jumping away to somewhere safe in the S3 ender to hide) and Burnham is a loose cannon who would gently caress up if she wasn't protected by the narrative. EDIT: Why Tilly did not just black alert and jump away to some nearby place is really stupid; they had the coordinates, and the Emerald Chain flag poo poo could just pursued them, or get hosed by trying to enter the nebula. Jump back when the flagship reaches them at the nearby place, rescue the crew and jump the gently caress away. This way, none of the finale stuff inside the Fed would have happened, that Orion vessel would have killed itself by going to investigate the Nebula, and the people stranded there would have been none-the-wiser. Trying to apprehend that kelpien who was semi-connected to the dilithium would have killed the Orion ship anyway if they ever reached the far end. And federation already knew the place, so why not send a strong fleet along with the joined vulcanremulan fleet to kill that stupid fucker. If there was a secondary character TNG and DS9 that stood out or an actor brought something extra to a guest of the week they’d write more for that character. It wasn’t just O’Brien, but Barcley and Ro Laren Garak and Rom were smaller roles that grew bigger because the actors did such a great job with them.

Robert Picardo is a treasure. He starts out as a lovely pencil pusher in Starget SG1 and part way through Atlantis he gets put in command and eventually "gets it" and chills out and actually feels like a member of the team. I'm high and pooping and I just noticed Stargate: SG1 is actually Stargate: Stargate 1 lol.

No, it's Stargate: Stargate Team 1 It's well before Atlantis, from memory. He starts out as a bog-standard pencil-pusher, gets put through the wringer a time or two, realizes "holy poo poo, this is all ABSOLUTELY necessary and cutbacks/reassignments would get us all dead or worse", and starts bending the rules in their favour. He's generally sent in to work to the absolute letter of the law, Woolsey just does it in Stargate Command's favour. By the time he's dumped on Atlantis Base to reign them in, he just knows to leave well enough alone and let the smart people do their crazy plans while standing well back.

i was really happy with how passionate archer was about not killing children. then it turned out he was brainwashed by an exploding egg and i guess he was wrong to not kill kids most recently he pirated a warp coil off another ship that's ofc ignoring the time he had phlox murder someone etc it's all very disappointing
