That book is specifically written as a final recap and I think the author says as much in the introduction. I blitzed through it in four or five days, but by that point I had already completed Anderson's Udemy course and was scoring 80%+ on the Boson tests. I would not trust it as your only source of information-- it's far from complete in that sense.

I didn't take any notes. Labs are pretty important because they'll get you actually typing the commands that litter the exam. Anderson includes premade environments for the Cisco Packet Tracer software so for the sake of the exam you're getting actual trigger time on an IOS command line. I have pretty good retention but I still did a few of them to make sure I knew the really common stuff.

I'll definitely swap to the CiscoNetAcad then since my university is giving me access. Appreciate the tip. I'm trying to weigh how heavily I need to memorize the nitty gritty sort of stuff like cable compositions vs. practical knowledge.

to my surprise, a big part of that was because the udemy practice exam set I purchased a few hours before for $20 had 70% of the exact questions and answers. So I think I bought a brain dump by accident lmao.

Has anyone had experience with the Azure Administrator Associate renewal assessment? Even with it being free I’d like to do some study prep before attempting it, but the Reddit posts I’ve seen about it don’t sound very promising.

How much do you guys make a year with these certs those who want to share? (Also general area.)

I'll start, I have Comptia A+, 5 years of experience with the title "Customer Service Rep 4" and an Associates, and I got an offer for Support Specialist position in Fremont for 83k after benefits and everything else.

E: GlassDoor says they've offered people up to 110k so I also want to know if I should try and negotiate for higher, or just take the offer.

For an A+?!?! Take that money and run.

a recently expired A+ that I don’t put on my resume

Salary is 123k CAD, which kinda sucks these days. new jobs are opening their negotiations at 150k Canadian so it’s probably time for me to :yotj:. Which I don’t really want to do, because I like my job, my managers, and it’s relatively low effort. Maybe in 2022.

In other words take that 83k USD Support Job and run with it because it’s almost as much as I’m making now for what I imagine is much more senior work.

Getting your first break out of low level support roles can be tough. Even when you're doing everything right, opportunities don't just fall into your lap - unless maybe you're willing to relocate cross-country.

In other words, it's a grind, but don't get discouraged.

Keep trying, you'll get there. The field is rife with people who have no clue what they're doing, it can't be too hard to break in. :11tea:

If you don't have it already, might be a good idea to put some sort of portfolio together? Use some open source datasets to do some neat things. Maybe even contribute to some open source data projects?

Oh, and in case you're not already doing it, apply anyways. Apply to literally everything that sounds like you'd want to do, regardless of the experience they are asking in the job posting. That stuff doesn't mean anything. Don't get discouraged if you don't hear back, it's just a numbers game.

I was looking into CISSP-ISSAP but the materials or the reviews I was finding on materials was a bit discouraging. There's really only the official textbook available and a $2500 "online seminar" with almost no details on what it actually entails.

I scheduled SEC530 instead, which I also hear is not great but work is paying and I've never done SANS before.

SANS is a $$ racket, but I do think their materials are pretty good and you do get to take the books in for the exam. Highlight important sounding stuff, make a good index of the books for quick reference, and you should be good on the test. I am now the holder of 3 GIAC/SANS certs thanks to work, but I haven't taken that one so I don't have any better specifics to offer.

Yeah, im applying for stuff that I think I can reasonably do.

I tend to hear back from 1/10 positions I apply for, and once I get to talk to a person I can usually get an actual interview, but then I get rejected due to lack of experience. I think im going to start emphasizing how quickly I have got to where I am by myself, and what I can do if I have some actual support around me, rather than where I am.

The portfolio idea is good though. I have some reports I can throw in straight away, and im half working on a report for the sportsball league I play, but converting the data into something that is approaching useful is a nightmare.

If you have training money, CE credits are by far the easiest now. https://ce.cisco.com

Edit: 30 credits will renew an associate level, more here: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/training-events/training-certifications/training/continuing-education-program.html

Passing any Cisco test (except CCT) will renew a CCNA. Many of the new specialist certifications are considered easier than the old CCNP switch exam from what I’ve seen discussed on Reddit. The one I did (enterprise design) definitely was.

Personally I’d start with the free MS courses

After that try to apply it to every possible thing you can find in your daily job.

I know this was a simple answer but thanks, the microsoft stuff is a good start, and filled my goal of showing exactly what I would be doing with my time for "development hours" on friday. I tend to struggle with "where to start" because as we all know, everything in this field just branches off into something else, we all feel like we know nothing etc.
