at what point does the weight of the scaffolding and billboard outweigh it's aerodynamic contribution?

I mean a billboard racer like the on in the video with the huge billboard will actually apply more pressure to the inner tire at higher speed. The larger the oval, the smaller the billboard for both low resistance but also because less surface area is required to keep the inner tires planted.

Billboard oval cars are hilarious examples of bludgeoning tech to make it work. They are easily the fastest cars there.

I'm just happy my first reaction "why does that car have a whole rear end billboard on it" was actually the right terminology.

While travelling around New Zealand in late 2019 and early 2020 Hubnut fell in love with an AU Fairmont he called Betty, short for "Ugly Betty". Since returning to the UK he's been through a heap of cars for daily driving, but seemed to miss the old AU. Now that car is in the UK! Here's the start of his vlog series on how he got it from NZ to UK and getting it road legal for the UK:

Imagine trying to worship one of the worst built, worst driving cars to have been built in the last 40 years. You could tell you were in a AU taxi because the diff would thump every time the godawful ancient 4 speed auto shifted. Oh wait did the headlining just fall off or is that a piece of the trim that disintergrated? Ah there goes the control arm bushes too and the brakes are best described as "yikes". You could plough a field with the understeer and then there's also the fact that the next Falcon fixed a godawful load of the issues, actually looked good AND helped usher into the world the legend of the Barra I6 so why on earth wouldnt you fixate on that instead?

I think he’s good. Very strong opinions but can always back them up.

His earlier video in the Hagerty series on the new Supra is excellent with some great driving. Another one on the Benz 500E was great too. I also dig the Magnus Walker films too.
https://youtu.be/CuiujPC8cmo

The Retropower UK channel is a great follow too. They jut posted a big update on Project Utah, a Mark 2 Jag custom with an ITB 2JZ, manual and custom EVERYTHING. The level of detail and engineering is amazing.

I love these old magazine style videos. You occasionally still see random DVDs like this in convenience stores here so I wonder how many of these have been lost to time.

Funnily quite a few of the car intros end with the owners saying "if there are any ladies who want to send me a fan letter..." which apart from being adorably pathetic is an interesting snapshot of pre-internet culture.

There are some serious problems with his "facts" there tho. The Mk IV was a fat cruiser and really was not anything close to a handling champion and no supercar hunter (It's a GT so topline razor handling and extreme speed are NOT what it was about), that was convincingly done in by the other JDM 206Kw cars - like the GTR, the RX7, the first of the EVOWRX and just come on what was the MR2 if not a sports car? Chopped liver? He's also making the core mistake of trying to project the fact the Supra was / is a tuner's delight and what it could be as a result onto the stock version. Sure you can throw cubic cash and build a poo poo hot actual supercar mauler but that's not what the factory car was at all.

Also maybe the Yaris in the USA was a Mazda for part of the nameplate's existance and then in some models but isnt anywhere else, that's a thing he really should be qualifiying else OS viewers are going to WTF no it's not a Mazda?

I remember a lot of the Japanese men being like this, especially the older men, annoyingly perverted and desperate is a better way to describe it but it was normal and accepted. Like oh, those silly old perverts are so gross tee-hee! Even back in the 90's it was weird to me how it was tolerated, especially now in the US no way that kind of behavior would fly. I don't know if it was just ingrained in the culture for so long, or maybe just a result of the ratio of more men to women making it worse or something.

Also the Bosozoku gangs were HUGE then and would effectively bring traffic to a halt. Most of the time they would cruise late at night and no one got any sleep :v:

I agree with you completely but also figure there’s no point raging against the American mindset of myth and legend that surrounds these cars largely because of one slightly ridiculous movie and a video game. It’s a battle long lost. On the Yaris thing I’m simply not bothered by an American journo speaking about an American market car to to an American audience. Top Gear/Grand Tour have been shows with a global audience for years and yet are still incredibly UK centric as well. It’s what people do. Relax guy!

I wasn't aware someone had pulled that Yellowbird Nurburgring footage and given it a once over. It now looks less lovely (but still absolutely terrifying)!

*edit: just noticed in the odd foot shot the driver is wearing loafers like Senna did... do loafers give drivers exceptional driving ability or are they just the preferred footwear of drivers with huge nuts?

Loafers can come with thin soles and mostly conform to foot size that would give good feedback so in lieu of race booties, they would work pretty well, better than sports or business shoes for sure.

Or Senna and Stephan Rozer are just that good.
