I find it interesting the reverb g2 doesn't come up at all when people are asking for recommendations. It's the best out there for sim racing which is why I have it but I thought it was a contender for general use as well.

Because depending who seems to use it the tracking is either "Fine" or "so bad its useless".

With how cheap its been lately, I'm shocked more folks haven't picked one up.

The Reverb G2 has been perfect for me in racing sims. The problems are really in its motion controllers, they suck, but those are not going to be used for racing. And in general, I don't think many of use have the Reverb G2, it wasn't marketed heavily, it got super overshadowed by the Oculus Quest 2.

For sims, the G2 reigns supreme. But ya, the controllers are trash, and everyone wants a stand-alone headset. I’ve yet to have an issue with tracking, and I’d say that it’s not only not “Fine” or “so bad it’s useless,” I’d go so far as to say that it’s better than my Vive Pro was, with the exception of controller tracking when outside LOS of the headset.

If you’re playing sims, get one.

It might also be the kick for valve to beef up their openXR release they did last year, since that was technically still a preview release (unless its gotten more updates since then I haven't kept up with).

Valve did put up an announcement of official OpenXR support, but I think it's more to make Kronos and Valves lawyers happy and allow them to use the OpenXR trademark, rather than to show a robust working implementation. OpenXR itself feels extremely unproven, in particular on the input side (which MS Flight Sim conveniently doesn't have to deal with).

Both Unreal and Unity have made abstarcted XR interfaces that work with both OpenXR and the old APIs, but they feel extremely janky because neither of them have made any games or even tech demos for it to make sure it works properly and has all the features to release a polished game.

Second attempt, however, seems darn near perfect.

I messed around a bit more with my quest and I think I got a few more of the kinks worked out. I changed the wired connection from a usb 3.2 gen 1 to a usb 3.2 gen 2 port and the link connection was completely solid. Not sure that was the issue though. I played some valve the lab and eye of the temple. The latter really hosed with my motion sickness which is notoriously sensitive so I think anything free range is going to make me feel pukey and whoozy for an extended period of time after play which really sucks because I feel like the heavy hitters will all require room scale. The stationary games don’t seem to affect me that bad but I do have that weird floaty sensation after playing for an hour or so. I think all things considered vr is really cool but it may not be for me due to the motion sickness and I’ll probably just return the headset to Amazon.

To be fair, eye of the temple is a really advanced vr game and probably needs steadier vr legs than "just bought a headset". Give an fps (or skyrim vr) a try in seated mode first.

Most people just want ease of use. I'd love the G2 if it were the exact same specs but released as the Index 2, with an easier connection to SteamVR and basestation tracking. Oculus is also very easy to plug in and go. The G2 works fine, but getting it working in general use can be a hassle, so.

The G2 has gotten better since release. Its problems were largely on the software side and the software has gotten lots of updates. Both SteamVR, and Microsoft Mixed Reality have improved quite a bit in the time that Reverb G2 has been out since December. Both pieces of software are still in beta testing though.

If you have a Quest possibly better to get from that store so you get Quest and PC version.

When someone says buying the Quest version gives you the PC version, they mean specifically the Oculus PC version, so separate from Steam.

I believe Eleven even allows the same Oculus account to crossplay with itself, with one person playing on PC and the other on Quest.

Theoretically there's an Index revision lurking around the corner somewhere based on some patents that have leaked, but likely as not there'll be an upgrade option for the existing headset.

There is actually a legitimate use for it... in about two months.

If you backed the Kickstarter.

The Tundra Tracker dongle's been designed specifically to fit in it. Which is a pretty good thing, considering it's a multi-device dongle so it can take literally ALL your trackers.

At this point even if there was a new headset around the corner lol at getting one in the next year regardless of release date. If you have the space, the PC and the money the Index is still legit amazing in many ways. Just be prepared to reseat a USB cable and / or reboot every time you use it. I also have a Quest 2 but it's mostly a walkabout minigolf console for me. That being said if you don't have a good PC or a grand laying around the Quest 2 is still amazing for the price.

Got myself a 50000 mAh battery that I keep in a fanny pack connected to my Quest 2. I just finished playing Valheim modded for VR for 7 hours with a few breaks to rest but no charging of the headset or extra battery during them. The Quest 2 only showed low battery just now because at some point I accidentally turned off the extra battery. It only used 25% of its charge. Owns bones. I'm ready to spend every waking hour in VR.

I played duck season for the first time last night and I’m very impressed so far.

It’s from stress level zero, the makers of Boneworks, and it feels very boneworks-y, as in you get this creepy feeling that something is not right with the world you’re playing in. I’m only a couple of levels in, but I can tell that dog is gonna try to gently caress me up. There is also a lot of shared lore between this game and Boneworks, Which is very cool.

Anyway, the shooting, the core mechanic of the game is very satisfying, and right off the bat they give you an option to just do endless duck hunt mode, which rules.

Pre-covid I was very into sporting clays, but the course near me shut down due to covid and I just haven’t been able to get out and do it with work and family obligations, and this 100% scratches that itch.

I can’t wait to get further into the game and see what it’s about

TL;DR: duck season is real fun so far. If you enjoyed the very specific charm and spookiness of Boneworks, you’ll probably like it, and if you enjoy Duck Hunt, sporting clays or trap shooting, it’s real good for that too. It also goes on sale pretty frequently from what I’ve seen

Okay VRChat is amazing. I entered, and after looking around my Home space or whatever I clicked "Cozy worlds" and entered a portal labelled "Tuscany". It was a nice secluded villa overlooking the sea, and it seemed wholly empty. I had a look around and while I was staring into the ocean, some guy in a Miles Morales costume screams at me from the balcony, "hey, you down there! Get the gently caress off of my property!"

I thought he was just goofing around but he actually came down and walked towards me screaming "get off my property you fucker!" Now I have no idea if he was just really intensely RPing or if there's some kind of property rights culture in VRChat that I'm unaware of :allears:
