Back to blanket chat, is there a great lightweight blanket I should try for summertime? I’m a hot sleeper () but still like having something more substantial than a sheet. Years back I had a Vellux that I liked and I’m considering getting another but the reviews make it sound like the quality has maybe gone downhill. That would be a shame because they were super soft and cuddly. I think I stole mine from a hotel in the 90s.

I'm a hot sleeper in the south. I've taken to using just a linen flat sheet during the summer and it provides the perfect amount of light warmth and breathability.

Anyone in here got recommendations for bedsheet sets? Something on the nicer end in thread count but not as stupid expensive as linen. Crisp, cool, etc.

One of my fitted sheets just decided to rip(???) so I want to upgrade to something not from Target.

I put this set of bamboo sheets on my wedding registry on a whim and we liked them so much I got another set. Cool to the touch and soft. In the summer we use the flat sheet as a lightweight blanket and it's the ideal set up for us.

Weird question, but does anyone know where I could get some, say, discarded used industrial control panels? You know, things that look like this:

Just panels, like 6-10" a side, full of big clunky buttons, switches, etc...like out of an old manufacturing line or CNC mill or something.

I have no plans for them, but thinking it could be fun to mess around with them, sort of decorate my garage or basement in a weird techno-industrial concept, heh.

something like that could probably be an okay distraction for kids, because I know as a kid I would just press buttons just to press them, ESPECIALLY if they had good reactive button-pushy feelings like going KACHINK, KACHUNK when pressed in/out

people who play large jenga at bars have nothing of interest in their lives.
A lot of larger cities will sport a company that does refurbished older controls stuff like that. Probably costly though considering their normal use. I know of a place in Hillsboro, Oregon that has a good selection, not sure how far that is for ya, think you can order of the website. SurplusGizmos.com. Another place to try might be calling around to any large manufacturing places, like paper Mills, and asking to speak to the electrical/instrumentation shop. See if they know.

I've got a bunch of these rubbermaid plastic containers:

they are largely wearing out, some have broken already and been discarded, etc, they were good for years but I'm wondering if there's similar containers available that are more focused or better recommends than the rubbermaids. more "lunchbox sized", the ones that can fit a regular two-slices-of-bread sandwich in it, and the ones that are taller versions of that that could fit like, a burger in it, those are the most-needed kinds for me. maybe a couple large ones for putting watermelon, stew, etc in.

I'd think salvage yards, auctions, etc. Although with auctions you're getting into "buy a piece of equipment just for the panel" territory.

Honestly, it sounds like a fun DIY project. Metal sheets are available in most home centers, old buttons and switches can be found -- sometimes in bulk -- on ebay/etsy/amazon. Graphics can be transferred to bare metal or painted on. It's almost endless!

My desktop computer case has a very poorly placed set of buttons for power on/off and reset, notably right where a cat can jump on top of the tower and put a hind foot directly on them. I do want to keep them connected, because the power button at least occasionally comes in handy. I currently have a piece of cardboard taped over it but would like a more permanent solution like maybe a hinged button cover about an inch to an inch and a half square. Plastic would be fine.

I can't seem to find a combination of search terms that doesn't get me something designed for a light switch, or that is huge or tiny, or for buttons on clothes. Anyone have any suggestions?

Yeah, I'm fine with that. It's more of an occasional problem that I'd like an eventual solution to than an emergency. Meanwhile, cardboard and tape.

But I'm a fan of dripper style "pots" and if you don't like using something that has plastic in it, Hario has glass and metal designs now.

:toot: RIP ZEEZ :toot:
I have kind of a specific request, but there's a lot of nerds on this dead forum so figured I'd see if anyone had thoughts. I'm looking for a table with leaves that fold out, that I can wheel into a closet when not in use. I want to put two relatively small CNC machines (a plotter and a cricut) on it while I'm using them, and ideally store them in the middle section when not in use.

My goal layout (excuse the MS paint):

Here, all sizes are in inches, A is one CNC machine, B is the other, and the red squares are the work area where I'd put mats for whatever they're working on. I figure I'd also just zip tie the power cords and a powerstrip to the table

Ideally each leaf would be relatively level, or at least not bent in each section.

It sounds like what I'm looking for is a folding craft table, a la this one but the center section is too narrow to hold either CNC machine, and I figured I'd see if people had other suggestions/ideas. Basically, I'm in a pretty small apartment and want a solution that doesn't require clearing off my desk or table and collecting all the bits and bobs to set them up.

That reminded me of the dining table we got at IKEA, which they don't sell any longer, but they do have this one: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/idanaes-drop-leaf-table-white-00487652/

No wheels and a tight squeeze though.

It sounds like what you want is a sewing cabinet or something like that, and I'd warn you that unless you are looking to sew, build this thing yourself or get something else. The stuff that is made for quilting or whatever gets incredibly expensive because they are purpose built and made to hold all the little things that you aren't lookin to use anyway. Instead of looking for something that rolls out of the way, my suggestion would be to find a spot in your apartment where it's okay to have a sideboard or buffet table, and just have a thin table there. When you need the devices, you pull em out and plug em in, and put em away when you're done.

Cool, ty - I'll take a look around to find a spot where I could set up something like that Ikea table, that is a pretty small footprint, and looking more at sewing cabinets they do have a lot of storage etc I just wouldn't use.

I've exclusively been using the Suay masks, specifically the surgical mask one they are known for.
They cover my face easily and I never have issues with them slipping. They also have my favorite material that is nice and breathable while also providing a good seal around your face.

Only downside is after a few months the fabric begins to break down a bit and gets a little fuzzy.

I think their description of the pros/cons of products are good but I'm not sure their overall ratings are that useful because it usually completely depends on your personal preferences and unless you're buying stuff the second it comes out at full MSRP (which really makes no sense for outdoor gear/clothing), by the time you're looking at something all the prices (which are inevitably one of the biggest factors in the overall ratings) will be completely different anyway.

At launch, readers will get nine free Wirecutter articles a month before being asked to pay for a subscription on the 10th article. Only a small proportion of Wirecutter’s readership currently reads more than 10 articles a month, said Linda Li, Wirecutter’s general manager. A small percentage of users visit the site more than 50 times a month. Ms. Li said the site will experiment with the free-article threshold.

The Times will make some Wirecutter articles free periodically “if they provide strong public service,” said a Times spokeswoman. For instance, Wirecutter’s coverage of air purifiers will be in front of the paywall when the subscription product launches amid the wildfires in the western U.S., the spokeswoman said.

Up until now, Wirecutter has generated revenue primarily through affiliate partnerships with online sellers, including Amazon.com Inc. When a consumer follows a link on the site to purchase a product, Wirecutter receives a commission on the sale. Those affiliate relationships will continue, providing a way to monetize nonsubscribers.

If they gated that to the new articles and had a rolling backlog of freely available stuff I wouldn’t mind as much. I’ll peruse most of their stuff as it comes out as part of the ol Morning coffee but then you limit yourself from actual searches when you need them. The affiliate link game ain’t a money maker and the NYT wants a ROI for that purchase.
