Best out of 71?
Anyone been reading the a crystal Kingdom graphic novel? About 2/3 through and I’m really enjoying the changes they made, although the fights with the crystal golem were very difficult to follow.

Haven't picked up CK yet, but yeah I have had trouble following action sequences in previous installments. The art style can be kind of messy, and the creative use of panel formatting doesn't help sometimes.

I was thinking earlier about how the party is going to fare without a healer, then I remembered what lovely cleric Merle was, and realized they'll probably be fine.

5e doesn't really need a dedicated healer all that much anyway unless you have a pretty ruthless DM. It's pretty easy to keep yourself topped up and cheat death if you get taken down. The RPG party of one-trick specialists is mostly a video game thing in TYOOL 2021.

I just finished it. I think it was better put together than the previous ones, which I don't know that I would have enjoyed without knowledge of the podcast. This felt like it stood on its own better.

I only ever bought the first one and didn't think it worked very well in a single volume graphic novel format. The art was good though!

I am laughing my rear end off that Griffin got inspired by the Wild Magic table from Graduation to actually use a random encounter table while traveling. I have listened to a number of actual-play podcasts and this is now the only one that actually uses the rule, or at least doesn't lampshade it.

They're still counting while I'm listening but the fact that they rolled A SIX PLUS NINE on the very first encounter roll is so loving unintentionally on brand for Griffin running D&D considering they ended Balance on episode 69

From the first two episodes + the vibe of the TQY worldbuilding, my impression is that Griffin isn't going to bog down the campaign too much like Amnesty or Stolen Century, but we are not going to get that Rockport Express lightning back in the bottle. This is pretty squarely in Crystal Kingdom-era Balance for tone and storytelling, but I think that's going to hinge on whether they maintain being cooperative with telling a story vs. absolutely loving dunking on Griffin for extended periods of time. Some of the best payoffs from Balance were Griffin taking some stupid bullshit from arcs 1 or 2 and having them land on their feet toward the end, like the Taco/Taako Truck

I really didn't like the taako truck, in hindsight. Just didn't land for me.

I didn't understand what the gently caress the deal was with the taco truck until Griffin admitted he was scared that having one of them "invent" a common Mexican food item would come across as racist to the Tumblr crowd and then I thought it was hilarious

i think it’s silly that he bothered to go back and finish the taco quest subplot but also i’m glad he did it

Story and Song honestly kinda sucks in general, all of griffins narration and plot beats go from winky and funny to genuinely up their own rear end. but I’m an idiot who got invested in this dorky family dungeon and dragons game so i can’t help but like a lot of it. It’s very final fantasy big stupid melodramatic finale and that’s appropriate at least

Honestly same lol. I’m still trying to psychically get over the large unlistened to swaths of Graduation in my library. It clangs against my broken brain but gently caress if I’m going to binge a dozen episodes of Graduation, that’d be like trying to binge a bag of cornmeal

Graduation is honestly best binged. I listened to a lot of it on a road trip and it made it much easier to stomach, since there's often three episodes in a row where they're planning how they're going to get ready to plan to do the thing. That gets real old when it's 2 months, it's not as bad when it's 3 hours and you're driving anyway.

Ethersea is good so far, moving along at a reasonable clip with fun characters and concepts. I guess the format of "you are newbie adventurers who need money so here is a beginner quest for you to do with an npc who ~may not be telling the whole truth~ is a typical d&d adventure format for a reason.

I was surprised by how well the players avoided metagaming the random encounter given that they knew that lower number = worse result. I guess there wasn't much else they could have done though aside from trying to find an IC reason to ignore the nice tempting thing and that would have been boring anyway.

This shit's about to go off.
It’s pretty disappointing that they could quite easily do some kind of video game related content considering that’s their background and has generated some of their best stuff, but they just…don’t. I would like to see the three of them and maybe some Polygon or former Polygon people stream some games at least, maybe bring back awful squad in some form if they’re burnt out on Monster Factory. Travis’ twitch channel doesn’t really cut the mustard without the others involved. That’s just me whining, obviously they’re going to do what they enjoy, it just seems like a no-brainer to me, especially through the whole pandemic.

Justin actually gives a surprising and pretty thoughtful answer about why. He sounds open to continuing it, just needs to be the right game for them to make something seriously bizarre, not just “an ugly guy”

It’s a great interview in general! It’s funny that people sometimes think they get raked over the coals and acquiesce to fans too much, he talks a bit about that and has an honestly good healthy attitude about it

I just finished re-listening to Balance. Even knowing exactly what was going to happen, it still made me cry multiple times. The end of Stolen Century with the "This is it. This is it." also gave me chills.
