Bread Liar
There's a TV show about the "mystery" of Oak Island where people with far too much time on their hands spent more money than they could ever get back looking for a treasure which most likely never existed.

On the episode I saw last night, they'd bored some impressively wide holes down a huge distance into the ground. By "impressively wide" I mean about a metre and a half. And it was full of nasty mud water.

Then they cut to the two idiots who dug the bore holes suiting up in scuba gear to dive down to the bottom of the hole to, I dunno, look for gold doubloons or something. The first one dived off the little platform they had in the hole.

Head first.

Into muddy water in a bore hole almost 50m deep.

Don't know what happened after that because I noped the gently caress out and changed the channel.

They have found some interesting items, which point to unexpected settlers and goings on. Not some massive treasure, but at this point it hardly matters. They show is quite popular, so now Discovery is basically bankrolling the entire dig, so they are making profit at this point.

It's gone from digging to maybe find money, to digging for entertainment and getting a paycheck to do it.

When I was a kid I had a book about all the ~unsolved mysteries~ type stuff (it was the 90s and people were really into that for some reason?) and Oak Island got a couple of chapters to itself. One thing that made me suspicious even as a child was that the treasure hunters kept insisting there must be something manmade down there because they kept finding layers of wood and clay and plant fibers -- those having been placed by the pirates as barriers to digging or something. But having dug holes in the beach before, as children do, I knew that pretty much anywhere you dug you would regularly find wood and clay and old rotten plant fibers. It's the nature of a beach.

Sure enough, scientists these days say that the layered "platforms" of wood are most likely from periodic bad hurricanes knocking down a bunch of trees and plants, which got buried in the sand and gradually compacted over the years.

I think what keeps them going is that despite what you're saying being true, they do occasionally find a coin or knife-blade deep down, so it's just enough incentive to keep going. I think they've found a few other decently valuable things on the island away from the main dig as well, so that fuels their interest too.

But they still peddle the BS about pirate treasure and complicated traps on the level of the Goonies horde. Like, yeah, some pirates did occasionally bury their treasure, and some maybe had an absolutely rudimentary trap like a spike pit, but they're all "they dug this 300 foot vertical shaft, and then layered it with horizontal shafts that go out to the ocean so they could flood the thing if security devices were tripped".

with 18th century technology, of course. somehow the pirates in 1785 buried a treasure chest hundreds of feet under the beach and constructed all these slant-drilled tunnels and underground trap doors and today we need heavy drilling equipment and steel well casings and continuous pumping to get down to...well, still not as deep as the pirates did apparently

I think their explanation for the flooding is sea level rise, but it's still pretty ridiculous that pirates could somehow dig all insanely deep shafts with 18th-century technology that they'd be carrying around on their boat.

I'm suspicious that they're "finding" those random artifacts at all, the Discovery Channel isn't what it used to be.

loving christ, I can't decide what would be worse: being dropped out of that thing onto your head or being ragdolled midair like that poor bastard. i've always been afraid of roller coasters not so much because the ride itself is scary but bc I don't trust the human creators to put them together, maintain and run them properly. on the other hand based on the number of videos posted recently it looks like those little swirly rides are more dangerous than your traditional roller coaster.

Actual roller coaster parks are generally pretty safe. The rides are permanent and supposedly maintained, so there's less chance of injury. At a carnival, I wouldn't get on anything that leaves the ground.

I worked at Cedar Point for five years as a ride supervisor. I've ridden Millennium Force dozens of times in a row on cold fall mornings as living dead weight... We almost didn't make it around a few times. I've been working the platform when guests got stuck at the top of Dragster. I climbed the stairs to the top of Raptor without a safety harness.

I would keep riding those rides. They are perfectly safe.

So understand when I say this it comes from a professional: Do not ride carnival rides.

Zero One posted:

Keep in mind I worked there over ten years ago. Looking back at it now Cedar Point wasn't a great company to work for. The pay was low, the hours were long, and the employee housing was awful. But I still loved it and kept going back every summer while I was in college. For employees it was more like a summer camp than a job. A summer camp for young adults with lots of booze and sex.

As far as safety Cedar Point really did care about that. At least for their guests. The rides were inspected nightly and as employees we were well tuned to our rides and if something wasn't right we could close it. The worst thing that happened in my time there was when Magnum slipped through its brakes while empty (it was raining) and two trains bumped. After that they stopped running almost any ride in any sort of rain just in case.

Safety for the employees was a little looser. There was the general risk of giving hungover kids the keys to giant industrial machines: We would get too close to moving rides than we should or ride them ourselves with less than full restraints. There were also quite a few OSHA issues. Fall protection was limited and lock-out tag-out didn't exist until my last year working there.

Overall I don't worry about my safety visiting any fixed amusement park, Cedar Point least of all.

Zero One posted:

When a teenager was killed by Batman: The Ride at Six Flags Over Georgia, the ride was closed for weeks (maybe months??) and Six Flags installed new warning signs on ride fences across all their parks.

When someone was similarly killed last summer by Raptor at Cedar Point, it reopened the next day with no changes.

Now... are there any changes that would have prevented an idiot from climbing a fence into an obviously dangerous area? Probably not. But Cedar Point (for all its gloating about safety) has a poor safety record.

When I worked there (a decade ago) there was no lock-out/tag-out for the rides. It was fully up to the college kids running them to make sure no one was working on the ride or in a low zone before operating it. One year I worked on this thing which as part of the opening procedures we had to walk up the bobsled track to inspect it. Nothing prevented someone from starting the ride while we were in the path of the cars.

Employees were also expected to climb to the top of these coasters with no safety tie off (Magnum at 200ft had the tallest lift walk. MF and Dragster have no stairs).

I saw maintenance start this ride (which instantly accelerates the train up to 72 MPH) while rides employees were inside the restricted area.

Ride employees also had full access to the maintenance mode of the rides. Other parks might restrict such a thing but at Cedar Point it would be too much work to have maintenance crews come out for every little issue. It was fairly common for two trains on Dragster to "bump" when the hosts were trying to open or close the ride. Or even when restarting from downtime. But I'll also partially blame the manufacturer for that one. Come on, Intamin! Who the hell builds a $25 million ride that requires employees to manually flip switches on the drive tires to move trains around?!

OSHA finally fined them and they added lock-out/tag-out around 2010. I'm pretty sure lift walks are unchanged, however.

There was also the Magnum accident which the park blamed on rain but was well known by employees to have been caused by maintenance incorrectly adjusting the brake system. Fun Fact! This is why to this day all the rides at Cedar Point close when it starts raining (no lightning). Even ones that have magnetic brakes.

Wildcat had a history of accidents too before it had a repeat of the 2008 rollback before the 2012 season started and they closed it for good.

Finally, don't forget Shoot-The-Rapids which was torn down this year after only 5-ish years of operation. It not only couldn't run boats at full capacity due to poor engineering (Intamin strikes again) but also suffered a lift rollback which injured riders in 2013.
