Not a Dickman, just a shape
DS3 is for sure the most noob/user friendly, but this unfortunately railroads the player significantly and you pretty much always are a high agility mage/glass cannon dodgerolling everywhere. I've heard of a full conversion mod that does it's best to rebalance resistances , give mana regeneration , new enemy types, etc. I can see why that mod was made but DS3 is the only one I have finished and was fun for the whole ride, hits a nice balance between linear and open world IMO, Crazy how early you can hit dragon slayer armory or crystal sage if you know what you are doing

DS2 interests me but I hit a boss that was after an unavoidable poisen gas run and it killed my momentum and I never went back, maybe I should....?

Ds1 consistently has the fun pulled out of it for me around O&S. I love it as a more linear experience and it's really a mood up until you get the Lord vessel but I would have enjoyed it a bit more if it had been a bit more linear

I've never actually played any of the Dark/Demon's Souls games, but I've watched LPs of all of them, and 2 seemed like the odd one out, story and lore wise

The story of Dark Souls 2 was by someone who actually understood the concepts used as themes in Dark Souls 1: mythic cycles echo and resonate, but they do not repeat. Then for Dark Souls 3 they decided, "No, actually it's the exact same thing repeating even though that doesn't make sense."

people quite often say Dark Souls 2 is the worst souls game but still a terrific videogame in its own right which really hits home when you consider people were excited to play Day's Gone and Cyberpunk - 2 games you've basically fully experienced from the trailers

My unpopular videogame opinion? The power leveling curve is generally poo poo, most games start with you exploring an unfamiliar world, a sense of caution and wonder, and end with you facerolling the keyboard while pretty particle effects don't let me see the enemies and impossibly large numbers pop out.

The reward for playing well should be to survive and continue, not break the game into tiny pieces. Nowadays you really have to try to get a game over in most games. I don't need every game to be a soulsborne, but at least make the player pay attention.

Another unpopular opinion. Don't be scared of jank.

Most games place too much importance on graphics and photoreality and they are boring as hell.

The most fun I've ever had with a videogame was with a mod called The specialists for half-life 1. It was the loving poo poo, even if it looked kinda janky because there was no way to animate properly all the crazy poo poo you could do.

Nowadays developers are terrified of being memed for bugs and such and so they make very pretty games with vanilla as gently caress gameplay ao nothing is out of place. E.g Cp2077 taking a lot of poo poo out of the game like wallrunning when most of the game's fun it's in fiddling with the game's movement so you can run faster than a car or jump over buildings to surprise enemies.

most rpgs would be a lot better without the combat, especially crpgs that are turn based. They are usually insanely slow and just generally annoying, I'm having an insane amount of fun in Disco Elysium, it feels like a 10/10 game to me, and if it had boring rear end dungeons and stupid fights where you miss half your attacks it wouldn't be nearly as good.

Maaaaaan the Specialists was loving 'awesome'. You're absolutely right, janky as all poo poo, but it was all in the debt of it being fun. Tossing a grenade at someone while diving backwards off the third floor, through a plate of glass, in slow-mo, spinning around and shotgunning a guy in the face as I fall past him on the second floor, then landing on the first floor and emptying a round into a dude's back was just UNBELIEVABLE at the time.

Pre ordered on a whim for the stupid extras. The trailers have been good as well.

Same! All these RPGs where they just want to tell stories, just make a drat visual novel so I can skip it and keep your lovely combat out of my games. RPGs with good combat, make a new game+ where I don't have to listen to all the words again.

I can tune a fish.
The funny thing is that I think DS3's swamp situation sucks the worst because there's technically two of them and they have some of the worst enemies. Blighttown is more bark than bite, all of 2's poison areas are pushovers or have some direct counter. Sure you can use the Quickstep trick to make navigation go faster, but it won't get rid of the crabs or the giant tree mages or the Ghru with the bullshit grab attack. They even threw in some Basilisks just for fun.

Jestery posted:

I hate that this is going to make me sound like an rear end in a top hat, but the poison gas really isn't that big of a deal. Pop some life gems. Now if we're talking about the boss surrounded by poison water, that's some bullshit. Doubly so because you can actually get rid of it, but only by way of cryptic bullshit.

All that said...needing to trudge through poison right before a boss is one of those things right out of DS1's playbook. (Probably DeS' too? I don't remember.)

The overall quality of the game precipitously drops after O&S. People are quick to repeat that Demon Ruins/Lost Izalith had development problems, but all of the Lord Soul areas are deficient or janky in some way. Even the DLC doesn't have particularly good map design, just memorable bosses.
