I wouldn't mind trying out hand coloring animation with inkwash! Just a matter of figuring out how to work around it. I have animation paper and Acme peghole puncher, so I got the essentials, at least. As for the resolution, I usually animate at 2048x1152 (2k HD), although for the web upload I render it to the usual 1928x1048.

For game animation specifically you’ll also want to check out Jonathan Cooper’s book on the subject. https://www.gameanim.com/book/ Also while self teaching is possible, most people who break into the industry do so by taking classes through iAnimate or Anim School’s game animation programs. It also really helps to be located in a place where the tax credits subsidize the game industry. For example Montreal is stuffed to the gills with game studios because the government is subsidizing everyone by 40%. Meanwhile it’s very difficult to find entry level jobs in the US because there isn’t a subsidy system. Though games are on a bit better financial footing than vfx companies, so they didn’t all flee to the tax havens the way the visual effects industry has.

Oh nice, you're in absolutely the perfect place for breaking into games. I work in tv/vfx animation in Montreal and work with tons of people who have done stints at Ubisoft or Eidos or WB Games. I got contacted just the other day about going to work at a games studio but my current contract isn't over for a while so I couldn't jump right at the moment. Games is probably where I want to end up long term though as it seems more stable than vfx/tv. Though not always, or some of the ppl I work with would still be at those games studios. Still, I know people who have worked at Ludia or Eidos for 10+ years and get bonuses every year which is just unheard of in tv/vfx.

Still in the process of finishing a cartoon based on my webcomic. Put together a rough cut using finished animation and animatic, and it wound up being over 17 minutes long! Whoa! Well, half of it is animated (I started back in March), so I'm gonna see that I finish it. In the meantime, I took the time to do this ditty for a Saturday Morning animation jam. Thanks guys. The prism model itself couldn't be simpler, it's just a faceted shape with a Glass BSDF shader. The rays have various shader parameters and a displacement modifier being driven by the sound F-curve. When the sound is loud it makes the white beam brighter and wiggle more, etc.

I'm at the point with my 20-minute cartoon where I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but it still feels so far. I'm 3/4 done with the animation, with 44 scenes left to do (including a handful being done by animators I know). Still been a good experience. Doing all of this made me learn some approaches to animation that makes me learn to be efficient, which will hopefully save me time when I do new cartoons (although for future cartoons I'm gonna cap the running time to 10 minutes, at least for a while) In the meantime, here's a sketchy layout https://twitter.com/bakertoons/status/1423823152350695428/

I use DaVinci Resolve for editing. I've adapted to CSP very well for animating. Very much have a handle with it, including how to do lip-sync efficiently.

I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out when it's finished. I'm about to embark on making a few shorts, but in the end it should turn out to be around the same length... I hope it won't take a year, but I'm prepared! Since we had a couple months pause and because we were high off our scriptapalooza placing, we wrote a few shorts. Maybe next time we pitch, we might have a little more of a fan base than my girlfriend's mom. In other news, my writing partner and I have been hired to write for another online animated children's program! This one is just an episode here and there compared to _____which is all the writing. NDAs so I can't say too much, but we are having fun. One was delayed for a couple months due to the pandemic, and the other is all remote based and is chugging along. Hoping to have a productive 2022. Already sent some scripts to my voice actor. My "Katrina" cartoon got a very good reception, so that's been encouraging, hence why I'm making more with the characters!

I haven't posted much because I've been making internal motion graphics for a pharmaceutical company that I cannot name due to a NDA (but it's a big one!). They've added me to their talent pool and offer me jobs first. That is paying my bills right now. The only bad part is that it means that I can't work on my own animations. E: serious question time: why not make digital storyboards? I made a few templates in AI and group each section together as a card (in case I need to move things around). I have not looked back at paper since.

For the thread in general, I got my copies of the Animators Survival Guide (softcover), The Illusion of Life (hardcover, was cheaper than softcover), and Game Anim; any other resources that would be good for 3D animation or maybe modelling, rigging and so on? Maybe something more geared towards actually shooting/compositing scenes? I'm primarily using Blender.

I agonize about sound a lot in my cartoons and spent a LOT of hours trying to find the right balance with voices, sound effects, and music, so I'm very relieved and happy to hear that my efforts paid off! As for storyboards, I find doing it on paper easy to focus. I prefer doing them in a separate room, away from my tablet, because it keeps me focused better. My storyboards are very scribbly, and it's more satisfying doing it on paper. It's just a personal thing for me, I guess. I have no problem scanning it in because I have a feed scanner. I do all animation digitally with my tablet, although it's still traditional frame-by-frame. Two other people helped out on the animation front, and one of them did his scene on paper, which I scanned and cleaned up. Curious if anyone can tell which scene was done on paper. Has anyone ITT used Procreate to do any animation and what did you think of it? I want to do a short, 15-20 seconds, and I haven't done any animating before. I just want to see examples of what people have done with the app. I sketch with it a lot but have never tried animation.
