Maybe use youtube-dl on a desktop and transfer the files to the iPad for local play?

Either access them in files.app or find a dedicated player. VLC can certainly do it but maybe there's simpler one tap options that work with young kids.

You could use YouTube-dl on the iPad itself and download them for viewing in some other app. Or maybe see how flexible the YouTube Kids app is?

YouTube is notorious for showing adult themed ads to kids. A lot of the videos are filled with some truly crazy poo poo too. It absolutely needs to be curated by a parent.

I think a plex install sounds like a relatively easy and (once set up) low maintenance way of doing this.

Plex is definitely the way to go. Use youtube-dl (or Vidl for a GUI on Mac) and point it at Blippi playlist, download the whole thing, drop blippi files in the Plex media directory and refresh library. Done - no more need for YouTube app.

I ran Plex on a raspberry pi for a while before switching to a Synology disk station, which lets you install Plex from their “app store” along with a ton of other useful server things, and getting their transcoding license to support all the devices all the time.

It’s very useful for giving all the family iPads (to keep this on topic) and the streaming devices access to the same media with no YouTube nonsense and no need to manage files device by device. Any time there’s a YouTube video someone likes, I grab it and drop it in Plex.

IMO you should not add Blippi to it, and when they ask about it you should gaslight them and act like Blippi doesn't exist. Blippi is the worst.

Seriously get Mayta instead. B is way better and doesn’t act like an 8-year-old from a broken home.

I've got an iPad 5th gen that I have been looking at upgrading. I am running into a lot of slowdowns when playing Magic the Gathering Arena on it.

How big of a leap will the iPad Air 4 be for me? I see that I can get a free set of Airpods right now if I buy one so it seems like the right time.

Man, it’s hella disappointing that the iPad Pro 10.5” doesn’t get the Live Text and Visual Lookup stuff in iPadOS 15.

I wonder if that’s all meta data that’s saved in the cloud and would work on the iPad if I use a compatible iPhone to AI-tag the photos.

I've currently got an iPad Pro 10.5 (2017), is the Air (4th Gen) much of an upgrade, or more a sideways step? With trade-in and a work discount, I could pick one up for about £220 out of pocket.

It's a feature listed as "Available on iPad with A12 Bionic and later." so I think it should be able to work.

The Pro 10.5" is still a really good device - not sure I wanna upgrade just to get the lens feature from Google Photos - which I can already do just by using their app instead of Apple's. Though honestly I could see it working perfectly as a jailbreak feature and there's no actual hardware reason to lock it out.

It's always hard to compared the iPad Pro CPUs to the normal CPUs, but it's probably a slight upgrade.
You lose ProMotion and quad stereo.
Gain USB-C.

My opinion, but I would think Pro Morion (120mhz) Is an automatic downgrade right there.

I am in a similar spot, I have the 10.5 pro myself. Fantastic device, but I would get the 2020 or 2021 pro as upgrades, it would be worth it over the Air to me.

And yeah, I was posting here that I was going to update to the 2021 iPad, and I just haven’t pulled the trigger yet. Mostly for right time to spend money reasons. But I think that would be the right upgrade going from any Pro versus going with the Air.

Another thing to point out is the price between the Air4 and the M1Pro. No idea how it is in UK, but in AU:
Air4 64GB is 899, 256GB is 1129.
Pro 128GB is 1199, 256GB is 1349.

So if you want >64GB but probably don't need the full 256, then the Pro is very competitive.

As someone with an iPhone and an iPad, I don’t think anything I own has a USB-C port so, for the time being, that would be a downgrade for me too by needing multiple types of cable.

Yeah Apple should just move the iPhone to USB-C already so I only need one cable type to charge my IPad, MacBook, Phone, and game consoles.

Is there a way to disable the swipe to open camera gesture on the lock screen? I have not, and will not, ever wanted to use my iPad as a camera but I keep accidentally triggering it.

If there's no way all I can think of is workarounds like parental controls to just disable the camera app entirely or something like a shortcut that triggers when it opens, but doesn't seem to be options to just close it/go home, or lock the screen again, just open another app instead? Course it'd be followed by an unlock prompt, but maybe that's enough to stop the camera app from doing anything.

Yeah I have two USB-C cables, one that's on the fritz and one that's in a dock that doesn't move -- but lightning cables are all over the place. Would have just one format so I can then buy a bundle of high quality cables.

I know I know I should just buy a new USB-C cable but I have a personal threshold of procrastination to hit.

I get slick deals alerts for high quality cheap cables all the time. Like 2 for $10 at this point.

Is the 11” iPad Pro display any better than a regular MBP or MBA screen? Maybe better ppi but that’s it, right? No HDR or wider color gamut like the 12.9” XDR?

I guess it’s time to get a skin for my Magic Keyboard; I noticed today that it’s starting to rip. I did a quick search and it seems like people like the SopiGuard ones. Are they OK? Any recommendations as far as texture or anything?

Edit: If it matters, I’m just looking for something for the outside and mainly just for the bottom, so far the top and the insides are all fine.

Is there an app that lets me use the Apple Pencil to write down notes, that are then translated into text? OCR, I guess?

I haven't used an iPad in forever but I really wish I could take notes during a Zoom meeting on my iPad and then immediately have those notes able to upload to Slack.

Yeah. You can search handwriting and also select/highlight it as if you would any typed text

It’s pretty slick how well it works. They’re expanding on this with whatever voodoo ML iOS uses for text recognition and applying to photos as well in iOS15. So you can take a photo of a menu/sign/whiteboard/anything and then you can search/copy text from it.
