I'm not even sure if the file content is stored on the chain so it may not even prove that the image is what he paid that money for. If it's just on the chain as a URL or something it could change to goatse at any time.

I think a lot are urls but I also believe that you could technically store any binary content in the chain so I think at least some of them might be spared from the URL GOES DOWN problem. This is just my assumption based on what I know as a computer toucher but I haven't looked into it so I'm probably wrong and it is stupider than I'm thinking.

you're right, they're actually just integers.

quote:

Yes! All NFTs have a uint256 variable called tokenId, so for any ERC-721 Contract, the pair contract address, uint256 tokenId must be globally unique. Said that a dApp can have a "converter" that uses the tokenId as input and outputs an image of something cool, like zombies, weapons, skills or amazing kitties!

so yeah, just an id number. hope whatever resolves those to meaningful things is still up and working.

early on in bitcoin people would post their deep thoughts on the bitcointalk forums, and a common one that came up was "hey what if we all agreed that bitcoins were worth $1 million each, then they would be and we would all be rich! can anyone think of a flaw in this plan?"

weird how a lot of the poo poo that has happened since then is basically the same as that, just dressed up and disguised in different ways.

What even is the "original file" in the context of digital art - buy the exact ram used while the creator was making the image while carefully maintaining the power the whole time? Even going to hard drive is a copy. I guess you could buy the hard drive and say it's the first permanent copy?

Everything online is a copy of a copy of a copy, regardless of who you buy from.

Most recently, it gave center stage to his still-active lawsuit against New Hampshire’s mask mandate. (“I was never really convinced that COVID was a particularly dangerous thing,” Freeman tells me when I ask about the case.) The show also gave an early home to the infamous “crying nazi” Christopher Cantwell, who appeared on Free Talk Live when he was still trying to brand himself as a libertarian anti-police activist. (“When he became a racist, I fired him from Free Talk Live,” Freeman says. “He just kept getting deeper into that world.”)

You can make all sorts of arguments about Bitcoin being a tech demo or technological oddity because of its problems. But for NFTs one of the original pioneers clarified the part about resolving an URL or token on a host off of Ethereum was a hackathon shortcut and gave us the current thread title when he couldn't believe how many NFTs got purchased when it's just a big table of URLs or integer tokens you plug into a URL.

This is the argument they use about why NFTs are a perfectly fine certificate of ownership for digital art if we all just agree because like it's all bits man, and you can enforce rights off of Ethereum.

There's ways to control the provenance of digital art though. Step 1 is definitely not putting them on a public website so NFTs are right out. Step 2 is using the wide and varied copyright protections available in the modern era because easily copied art isn't a new thing to computers. That cat debatably got out of the bag 500 years ago with the printing press. Novelists do just fine in a medium you can pirate for less than 1mb of space. I guess that means Kindle DRM is a more effective NFT at this point.

There's problems with these processes. I don't think blockchain is going to fix them but if they want to try they can get their lazy asses off of Ethereum and figure out a blockchain that can effectively hold the art for a start.

The entire seizure was militarized for no good reason, though if the radio show was full of "we'll fight the feds off!" bluster then that would be sufficient justification to say they were expecting possible violent resistance.

Yeah I find myself in the weird position of not being terribly concerned the warrant was served with a surplus of coercive force and armor because of the libertarian angle. Sovereign Citizen-types are maybe the only people who regularly kill cops and nobody else, so it’s not surprising that they potentially viewed this libertarian that way.

A polite little mouse!
ground under the statist jackboot just for using sound money on a website!

well, running a money transmission business - specifically, exchanging cryptocurrency for actual money - that wasn't "licensed" by the bureaucratic oppressors who hate freedom

and something about opening bank accounts in the names of churches - "The Shire Free Church", "The Crypto Church of NH", "The Church of the Invisible Hand", "The Reformed Satanic Church" - and pretending that the money coming in was tax-deductible religious donations

so the usual governmental overreach

the same house was raided by the FBI in 2016 on an investigation into child pornography

must be one of those coincidences

one of the guys from Free Keene was libertarian turned neo-nazi Chris Cantwell. this bit in my 2019 Foreign Policy article on bitcoin nazis was about Cantwell:

quote:

One neo-Nazi podcaster found a credit card processor that was fine with the content of his show but said he was untouchable for another reason: He was considered a money laundering risk because he dealt in cryptocurrency.

Cantwell got out of jail after the Unite The Right rally and bought up big into bitcoin! right at the December peak of the 2017 bubble. he lost so much money on bitcoin that he had to sell his guns to pay his lawyer.

so, in conclusion, this raid makes me feel more statist than that sovcit courtroom taser video

A typical trading platform has more than 50 tokens on it. In fact, many have well in excess of 100 tokens. While each token’s legal status depends on its own facts and circumstances, the probability is quite remote that, with 50 or 100 tokens, any given platform has zero securities
