Absolutely a must watch, there's an MST3K episode of it too. Sometimes it's listed under the title "Operation Kid Brother" if you're looking for the movie itself.

There's a BBC thriller miniseries called The Treachery Game that begins with a guy being murdered while swimming, and I was looking at this brief cameo (which was included in the recap at the start of every episode) and thinking "That guy looks a hell of a lot like an overweight Sean Connery..." Hi, Neil!

Neil Connery died earlier this month. RIP.

Lois Maxwell, who was Miss Moneypenny from Dr No, all the way to A View to a Kill, is in it too. She once said she was paid more for her appearance in "Operation Double 007" than she was in all the official Bond movies, combined.

I've gotta see those MST3k eps. I've seen a smattering, but missed a few classics.

Gotta love 007. For me the only ones I haven't seen are Octopussy, Living Daylights (saw part of it), and then I'm all set. Well, not including the half-official ones. Also I didn't finish Thunderball a couple times over the years, so asterisk on that one.

Overall the Moore era is my fav, with the Gold entries from Connery and Brosnan being in my top 10 too. And I love Casino Royale (the newer one).

It's cool that the Hitman devs are making a 007 game too.

Living Daylights is a top one. Best Barry score, best cinematography until the obvious winner, and is an ahead of its time Pierce style update that makes the character more like the novels.

If we are going back to MST3K, Mitchell isn't the "boss," each person in that triumvirate is equal and has their own motives for the scheme and Bond addresses them separately.

Thanks! Last MST3k I popped on was Zombie Nightmare with Thor, a metal hero of mine. This Pumaman sounds like quite the hero himself too.

Here's a question for the Bond thread. Any other fav spy or 007 adventure feeling movies you're a fan of? Or anything in that ballpark? I love the Lupin the Third franchise, which has a lot of Bond in it's DNA. Castle of Cagliostro is a great gateway into that for example. Island of Assassins (aka In Memory of the Walther P38) is one of the more 007 feeling ones.

Our Man Flint with James Coburn - and it's weaker sequel, In Like Flint (still fine for a midnight movie) - are definitely worth a look by anyone with a taste for alt-Bonds.

And there's also that episode of original series Star Trek which was inarguably a pilot for a spacey-Bond series.

(e: S2E26 Assignment: Earth! The agent is named is Gary Seven :haw: and not only acquires a beautiful human comrade, but also travels with a cat which can transform into a dolly bird. Goddamnit, Q Branch, why didn't you think of that?)

It really is. It's great for introducing someone to MST3K. The downside is that whatever you follow it with almost certainly won't be as well-received, and you end up with someone who has watched 1.5 episodes of MST3K in their life. (Cf: my wife)

You do Pumaman, Space Mutiny, and maybe Prince of Space, This Island Earth, or Jack Frost. The secret to MST3K is they need something to work with, they can't spin gold out of hay. There's a lot of stuff that's so bad it can't be improved.

Awesome, will do!

And yep I've seen the Diabolik ep, good stuff. I've been meaning to try that movie itself sometime too. Just now I was looking at a wiki that mentions Body Movin' by the Beastie Boys video is based on that, I forgot about that. Pretty ill.

And now a random Bond opinion: Quantum of Solace is really really underrated. Or at least, I like it. The Bourne era shaky cam isn't my fav, and the overall plot and villains etc is just ok, but something about the adventure, and Olga K's sidekick Bond girl etc just makes for a cool ride. It aimed low, and for me landed respectably.

I'm gonna guess that saying the Mission Impossible is cheating?

That recent Man From UNCLE movie was good. Too bad we'll never get a sequel since Armie Hammer turned out to be a sicko.

The long running comic Modesty Blaise kind of has a similar vibe.

I want to see a Modesty Blaise movie starring Eva Green. Maybe Jason Statham as Willie? Less sure about that part.

(The best part of any Modesty Blaise story is when some of the villains realize they're fighting Blaise and Garvin and are like "gently caress it, I'm out, I enjoy breathing too much, you all can go and die, good luck with that.")

I have the first Modesty Blaise book version on my goodreads list, mainly because Vince is reading it in Pulp Fiction. I love some pulpy older comics (Judge Dredd starting in 77 etc), never read any Blaise. Are you fans of mainly the comic version, or the novel version as well?

Speaking of spies and Tarantino, I got that Berlin Game book on the shelf mainly since QT mentioned being a fan of it and wanting to film it. Plus Lemmy was also a fan of that author, always good.

I mostly know the comic version because someone posted a whole bunch of it in BSS in the Newspaper Comics thread. The art is heavy on the cheesecake at times (sometimes with outright nudity) but it's very consistent in Modesty's characterization.

It's produced for a foreign audience just in the sense that the budgets on Bond films are way too big to just hope it does well in the UK. When you're putting hundreds of millions into a single film you need it to do well all over the world, which the Bond series has a history of doing pretty much from the beginning.

Of course, Eon films was created by an American and a Canadian. It's always been an international thing, they just usually shoot them at a British studio called Pinewood and of course the Bond character is an iconic British character.

They can also spot-focus films depending on where they want money from due to it being about him traveling around the world and it being able to touch certain genres. Goldfinger was the one that blew the whole series up to how big it was and most was set in America. Movie after that was set in America and islands 100 miles away from the U.S., then we go to Asia/Japan and Europe, then back to America/Vegas in the next movie, and America and Jamaica (and the movie after that went back to Asia but threw in America's favorite sheriff!).
