There is a CAD 3D software thread in DIY, which is called something else now.

e: hobbies, crafts and houses

Problem is I'm coming at it broadly and just wanted to confirm the following suspicion.

I have an interview at a place in a bit and getting 'an in' while I'm still diddiling around with a local Community College is what I'm aiming at. I wanted to make sure that there weren't some specific doublespeak I should be able to throw out.

There is a CAD thread in DIY, but seems to be mainly for MFG and Printing.

I've been personally going down the Revit youtube rabbit-hole as the software I use for Fire Protection design is starting to make the jump from AutoCAD as it's base import to Revit. Pretty exciting stuff to finally being able to get 3D models in as my base since I've been doing the FP design work in 3D for like 6 years already.

Is microstation still in use?

Depends on the field and company. Civil is where it's most prevalent. But I think generally folks are moving away from Microstation, rather than towards it. They got behind AutoCAD on BIM, and started losing chunks of my old company who liked to use Microstation.

AutoCAD won't steer you wrong - lots of our smaller subconsultants would use it, and we (using Microstation) were adept at working with AutoCAD files. The reverse was less true, AutoCAD users were not good at using our Microstation files.

Survey foot / international foot was a perpetual problem.

There's plenty of makers who don't know carpentry or welding but do those things anyway.

It definitely feels like "maker" almost always means "amateur who does any number of trades well enough to accomplish whatever hobby they are pursuing".

Might be more like OpenPlant, iModel hub, projectwise, assetwise, synchro and plantsight. At least if youre looking at 3D plant CAD authoring.
