So even if the cars are driving at a good distance apart. A car switches lane into the gap the car behind was leaving. It brakes a little because its a little surprised and wants its gap back. The car behind sees the brake lights and after reaction time brakes a little more. This ripples backwards and the jam can occur a couple of miles back from the initial braking. It's really interesting and I really recommend looking up the research into this. It's why we have motorways with variable speed limits now because everyone going at 50 can mean everyone gets there faster than a speed limit of 70.

Also unfortunately pointing out that everyone is driving too close together doesn't actually stop them from driving too close together. Much like pointing out that crashing your car is expensive and dangerous doesn't stop people doing that either.

Waze is actually really good at teaching this, because its time estimates (assuming it's a route you travel a lot) are quite accurate. I've found that driving like a maniac might make me FEEL like I'm getting there faster, but Waze's ETA time will only change by a minute or two earlier at most and I almost never manage to get there faster than either its original estimate or the slightly adjusted one having driven like a maniac. Which has basically stopped me from doing that (not that I really did a lot of lane weaving and so on, but I used to be much more annoyed about left-lane hoggers and now I'm just kind of zen about the whole thing - "it says I'll get there in 40 minutes, so it's gonna be 40 minutes and there's basically zip I can do to change that"). Either that or I've just gotten old, but either way, it's made driving with traffic much less stressful and that's worth more to me than saving some time.

Alright, I turned this one off quickly because I looked at what else he had on YouTube a while ago. His first or second video seemed to have the message of "people who are depressed need to just go take a walk or do a hobby ", which doesn't sound like a good mental health stance. So I may have taken the wrong impression of this video.

A lot of his songs are about lovely personal habits and life choices, and most songs (like this one) have a brief straight-talking bit where he reveals how this harms him or the others around him, making it clear that the take away message is "don't do this". Anyway now that his comedy has been dissected it's even funnier, right?
