I wonder how long the current Government will last similar to what happened to South Vietnam.

2 -3 months at this rate?

Sheberghan: Taliban captures second Afghan provincial capital

Sheberghan has fallen with minimal fighting. Most government forces fled ahead of the advance. Local government has retreated to and is holed up in the airport.

This is Abdul Rashid Dostum's hometown. If it would fall so easily I think the usefulness of local anti-Taliban militias has been greatly exaggerated.

Taliban seize government buildings in Afghan cities Kunduz, Sar-e Pul

Looks like armed resistance is collapsing across the north. Afghan Armed Forces reportedly only hold the airport and an army base in Kunduz and have withdrawn completely from Sar-e Pul.

Numbers for whole fighting across the country? Probably in the low tens of thousands considering the known amount of casualties, desertions, and surrenders of ANA troops since May 1st. No real information on the size of anti-Taliban militias. I've seen no recent estimates on the amount of fighters the Taliban have under arms.

The three numbers I would like to know are:

1. How many active Afghan commandos are there?

2. How many operational aircraft does the Afghan Air Force have?

3. How many pilots does the Afghan Air Force?

These are the three pillars holding the current government up and once one tips the rest will follow.

Fake edit: While I was trying to find concrete numbers I noticed Al-Jazeera updated their article and that another provincial capital, Taloqan, has been taken by the Taliban.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/8/8/taliban-captures-third-provincial-capital-in-three-days posted:

Taloqan – the capital of Takhar province – was the next to fall on Sunday, with resident Zabihullah Hamidi telling AFP that he saw security forces and officials leave the city in a convoy of vehicles.

“We retreated from the city this afternoon, after the government failed to send help,” a security source told AFP.

“The city is unfortunately fully in Taliban hands.”

yeah that's been the most surprising thing since spring. bbc radio had a report a couple days ago that said "don't worry, the taliban are NOT making inroads with tajiks and other northern ethnic groups, they're still a pashtun supremacist organization" and that's clearly wrong

strangly a lot of departments in southeastern part of the country are still in government hands and that's where i thought a taliban stronghold was in the early 2000s, like around jalalabad

Kunduz on its own is a Pashtun stronghold with Talib inclinations. usually it’s everything on either side that keeps it in nontaliban hands. Kunduz falling is pretty indicative of Taliban inroads with the Tajik and Uzbek countryside.

The Taliban are reportedly driving on Mazar-i-Sharif as well. It is the largest northern city and last major presence of the Kabul government in the north of the country.
