Starting on pad/rotor replacements on all 4 corners. Will also be installing braided brake lines from FM while I'm at it. Then a full brake fluid flush. Should be fun.

Hell Miata (96 NA) is running. No weird noises or smells. I am getting cooling issues, discovered one fan doesn't kick on. Ive tested the fan and it works. I see there is a cooling fan relay and a pair of AC relays. Anyone ever have to tinker with this system? I just want to eliminate the easy and common issues first.

Cooling fan turns out it was working fine. I mixed up passenger and driver side fan identities. Buuuut..... This is still an issue. I'm going to add more water to the radiator because it's running pure 50/50 right now and hope that fixes the issue. What would you guys reckon is a good percentage for a regular rear end road application?

I just did the fronts on the side of the street. Piece of cake. Make sure you have an 8mm(?) bolt to get the rotors unstuck, it worked like magic for me.

um excuse me posted:Cooling fan turns out it was working fine. I mixed up passenger and driver side fan identities. Buuuut..... For what it's worth in my '99 I run 50/50, stock (still factory original ) rad, and regularly track my car in 95F+ temperatures, and my temp needle is never over half. Do you have the stock undertray installed? It makes a huge difference in how well the cooling system works. Is there a chance you've got an air bubble trapped in the system? The only time it went slightly over half I hadn't flushed the coolant in... somewhere north of 5 years, so I flushed it and haven't had issues since.

So here are the things that aren't standard that could affect the cooling: -Ford Escort GT head. Unsure of how different coolant path is. -No thermostat. It's a summer car so I'm not expecting to need one. -Mishimoto aluminum radiator. You'd think this would help. -Undertray. Lol, this car barely has a bumper. I wonder which of the 4 previous owners took that off.

Is it overheating sitting at idle or just when driving? If it's when driving, an undertray probably fixes your issue. My thermostat is stuck open, I'm ignoring it until I install the turbo this winter. Means cold morning drives to the track are higher gear or it won't hold temp

TrueChaos posted:Is it overheating sitting at idle or just when driving? If it's when driving, an undertray probably fixes your issue. Both! I get high temps presumably held back by the airflow from driving, and higher temps parked at idle to the point the overheat fan kicks on. My radiator started leaking which is a fun new development. It's a Mishimoto which makes it extra disappointing. Hell Miata gonna hell Miata. Edit: hey isnt the fan supposed to turn on before the needle climbs? Air dam huh let's just take a look at figure out what I need to get it mounted Goddammit. Edit: gonna order $40 in fasteners to see what I can piece together with what is still there. You know those people who find a POS and say "oh my god someone rescue this before it ends up in a junk yard", I am the one person who listened. It has cost me more than it would have to just buy an NA without issues but now there is one more NA that will spend another decade on the road, and to me, that's what makes this worth it Edit: replaced some old heater hoses and the old busted hose clamps with the new hotness. um excuse me fucked around with this message at 15:36 on Aug 8, 2021 |

I started to lol and then I did the math and realized I'm about 12k into a 4.5k Miata and the only performance upgrade I've made is wheels and tires , and it hasn't been repainted and the seats need to be reupholstered or replaced Pretty good rate of return, though, it's easily a 6k Miata now

The Miami blue Miata looks awesome but jeez how do you guys manage that. I'm probably like $500 into my $6k NB and everything works properly. I'll probably spend $1k to get the frame rails and rockers fixed soon but otherwise I'm not expecting any non-performance spending any time soon.

Paid £900 for my NB and am in it for about the same in new suspension bits and replacement panels for welding in. I suspect that number will go up once I have it back on the road

New wheels & tires, every last seal in the engine except head gasket, new struts & springs all around, all new parts for AC system except the lines, new alternator, new brake calipers & rotors, new ball joints, every single piece of weatherstripping ($1,800 if anyone wants to do this), hardtop, new seals for the hardtop, coolant reroute, new undertray and air guide, reupholstered seats, paint (poo poo's expensive!!!) new front and rear fenders, and like millions of little fasteners, clips, nuts, etc. Everything I've bought for the car, including the car, over the span of 4 years added up to $24k. I'm so seriously burned out on the project, yall have no idea.

For me it's about $500 per engine rebuild (I'm up to three), about $1500 for a new interior, new wheels and tires about $1200, new brake system and suspension for about $1000. I'm not that deep in, but I also do not see the end in sight. There's still a ton under the hood that needs to be unfucked, and I have not even started body work.

4.5k Miata 2k in catching up on PO’s deferred maintenance 3k to fix it after I slid it into a guardrail 1k in misc poo poo (replacement headlight, mostly, but also shifter rebuild and motor mounts and whatever) 1k in wheels and tires Really it was wrecking the thing that hosed up the numbers

BloodBag posted:Body work is the worst thing in the world. Mechanical stuff is easy to deal with, but bodywork is mostly art. Good on you for trying it. Cutting out / replacing the body of my car was the easy part, but once I started prepping the thing to drop off to paint I have spent way more time with bodyfiller / sanding blocks / primer than I care to admit. I could never follow through on painting the whole thing. Also, I paid $20k for my Miata. I started adding up parts and it is obscene what it'd cost to replicate... which reminds me, I need to call Grundy or Hagerty.

4300 for the NB 800 in deferred PO maintenance (timing belt, wheel bearings, brakes, radiator, hoses) 1000 new canvas top installed 0 windshield taken out by a tree branch (soon) 950 to fix a bigass dent, same tree different branch (+1k to get rid of the dying tree) (soon) 600? nice replacement seat covers professionally installed 8-9k all in over 5 years, and now featuring a moldy interior and early-stage rocker cancer. Really love/hate keeping this thing around.

Got the repaired radiator. The new fan switch is in but I still have the overheating issue. I combed 10 year old forum posts and started getting annoyed at all of the suggested issues I know I solved when I came across something interesting. Intermittent cooling can be displayed if you rev the engine. https://i.imgur.com/HYh40zO.mp4 Intermittent cooling is caused by a bad water pump. The only thing I haven't replaced is the sender for the gage cluster. I doubt it's bad as it seems to behave normally (ie slowly climbing, sitting in the middle for a little, not dancing around.

You sure you don't have a bad cluster? I thought the cluster was meant to have hysteresis filtering making it impossible to move that fast.
