"Singapore has public housing" by itself would be enough to stand as a refutation that it's run as/like a neoliberal hellscape. Throw in the Sovereign Wealth Funds, the State Owned Enterprises, the outright rejection of liberalism as a tool for governance in the cultural space, and the complete dominance of the PAP in the parliament (including supression of other parties that so-called liberal democracies might clutch their pearls at) and Singapore is far closer to being a "State Capitalist" nation than any of the others that usually tarred-and-feathered with this phrase.

though the governance ethos is very much neoliberal. there's an interview i watched with a singaporean gov't official who, when asked about his countrys welfare model answered with the typical boomer word salad about moochers and how you gotta work, the government isnt gonna prop up a lazy parasite, you can do what you want so long as you can pay for it etc

we must learn to fish but also become like fishquote:Many people think it impossible for guerrillas to exist for long in the enemy's rear. Such a belief reveals lack of comprehension of the relationship that should exist between the people and the troops. The former may be likened to water the latter to the fish who inhabit it. How may it be said that these two cannot exist together? It is only undisciplined troops who make the people their enemies and who, like the fish out of its native element cannot live. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZQlscG7dcg posting because there's a part where mao blows down the street in an army jeep behind a v-shaped motorcycle squad and it's badass BrutalistMcDonalds has issued a correction as of 12:21 on Aug 7, 2021 |

What's the deal with dwnews anyway, I've seen it in the past and thought that it was a Chinese branch of Deutsche Welle but that didn't seem right so looked more and realized it was these dudes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duowei_News Kinda weird to see a simplified mandarin news outlet with Taiwan in its top menu haha. Is it far to one side or the other ideologically? My mandarin is nowhere near enough to read the subtext/tone of the articles (I'm bad at tones in the first place! ba dum tss).

Dwnews.com is fairly neutral outlet run by people from mainland. Yeah it's not dw news. Btw dw has its Chinese edition too, run by mostly falun gong people. Also, Taiwan has its own CNA.com.tw, not to be confused with the more famous CNA, which is Singapore's government owned news outlet. stephenthinkpad has issued a correction as of 13:06 on Aug 7, 2021 |

yeah the whole "credit" system is miles behind america. I asked my wife what would happen if we stopped paying our rent, eventually theyd kick us out. but if you look for a new place they dont do any background check at all. instead you just have to pay a ton at once (3-5 months rent is the standard). rofl, my gf (at the time) actually used sesame credit when I first moved to china. we got a discount on our rent (didn't have to pay broker fee, 1 month of rent). in my 5 years living here thats the onyl time I've heard of it. In so far as it's used, its mostly incentives, rather than punsihments, like low credit score in america. Thats something thats not really discussed outside of china, but in general (not always) the govt prefers to nudge people in certain directions rather than punishing them. A perfect example is the covid vaccine. The chinese govt could just mandate it, and make everone take it, but they choose not to. the rollout has been pretty fast due to production capacity and peoples trust for the govt. I've heard about incentives in other provinces, but here in beijing everyone just got it because why not. I'm pretty sure beijing has reached the level of herd immunity (if there could be such a thing with the loving delta varient) On the other hand, my wifes parents dont trust it or the govt, so they've remained unvaccinated, with no consequences.

it rules how american rhetoric on covid vaccines just has to completely ignore how the vaccine rollout has worked in any other country because its quite obvious when you look at the international figures that some countries with lower rates are doing better while others with higher rates are doing worse because you cant just build a one dimensional policy entirely around vaccine rollout and expect that to magically end the pandemic

stephenthinkpad posted:* I didn't realize most of the Taiwan population live on the east side. You mean west and yes it's not even close. Basically everything is on the west side, and there's a strip of flat land that's in most places literally just a few kilometers wide, which is where basically all the properly inhabited parts are on the east coast. The largest areas of the flat strip are Taidong and Hualien. Also Luodong I guess is a bigger flat area but that's kinda chilling in the north surrounded but mountains. Check the topographical map (think this should link right to it?) and it's pretty obvious where the people are: https://www.google.com/maps/@23.7542036,120.5224203,9z/data=!5m1!1e4 East coast is really quite small. Also super nice since the mountains stop the combined bad air from the west coast factories/power plants and mainland in the winter from making things dirty.
