I wish we had the reverse yellow light thing in the US. I feel like every time it's brought up people say that it would make people jump the light or pay less attention or some other problem, but does that happen in other countries that have it? I wonder if anyone has actually done a study to see the effects.

I have seen some studies that showed positive effects of having a numeric countdown to the time a green light would go yellow, although in addition to more cautious behavior they also saw some people being more unsafe since now they had a timer to beat.

Back to the topic. I recall Texas tearing up some paved roads and replacing them with gravel.

https://www.rt.com/usa/texas-gravel-asphalt-txdot-748/

Officials in Texas this week began converting 83 miles of asphalt road to unpaved lanes of gravel. Years of heavy truck travel has ravaged entire routes in south and west Texas, and going back to gravel is for now the only affordable answer.
Representatives for the state’s transportation department told the Texas Tribune that construction would begin Monday on a project that involves tearing up over 80 miles of asphalt that has been severely damaged over the years due to heavy traffic brought on by even heavier machinery. An oil boom has caused an energy industry to emerge near the state’s southwest border with Mexico, but that extra business has also brought extra traffic.

Now local roads ravaged by oil-industry trucks are far too damaged to be repaired by what resources the state has, and the solution officials saw as the most affordable involves serious downgrades.

TAXING not an option.

Of course our fuckstick of a governor sure wants to use state tax dollars to build a border wall…

Traffic signals here have that hood around the individual lights both so that they pop against the background in sunlight, and so that traffic from directions can't see the indication & think it's theirs. I drive a stick shift and ride a motorcycle, so I'm always craning my head over to watch for when cross traffic gets their yellow, gives me time to engage the clutch and get back into gear. Sometimes I can't see more than a hint of their light going yellow, but that's by design. Before stop-start tech was prevalent, the advance indication was to let drivers know when to start the engines they'd shut off for the wait.

The only problem is, when someone's first in line staring at the signal waiting for the starter's gun, they aren't looking for cross traffic. Also more than a few times, I've seen someone take off when the left turn lane's advance arrow lit green, but straight-through still had the red.

I also drove commercial vehicles - in areas with crosswalk signals, we were taught to cover the brake pedal if the orange 'don't walk' was flashing or solid on, and sometimes those had countdowns. So that already kinda exists.

We've got cross walks around here and some have countdowns and some just gave the flashing don't walk symbols. That's one thing I try to teach new drivers at my company too. "You see it's still on walk you're probably ok, but if you see the flash or the countdown, then get ready to brake"

It's extremely rare that I see someone jump the light and start driving on the yellow, before it turns green. Regular old stale yellow/red light runners are a much more regular occurrence.

I also see a lot more idiots creeeeeeeping at the light while it's red, and then completely fail to actually go when it actually turns green. It's made even more bizarre by the fact that most cars sold here are manuals.

I see that poo poo all the time here too, slow rolling right into the crosswalk and then a full two seconds before they react when it turns green. Minmax effectively!

They work fine in practice IMO. Unless you're using launch control, by the time the car crosses the stop line, the light is green already anyway. Overall through I'm not sure there's any benefit to it either, but I like that the sequence is symmetrical.

More eastern. Kiev, Ukraine. The black plates are for military vehicles theoretically. As in, road vehicles belonging to the military, not like tanks and poo poo. This one could be legit, but if you see them on a Land Cruiser or Range Rover they probably bribed someone or the plates are just fake.

I told you that story so I could tell you this one.

Because it's Texas, raising taxes to maintain public roads is a no-go, but paying tolls to maintain private tollways is the purest form of freedom. And those tollways are very nice. The 635 express lanes between 75 and 35 in Dallas are a canyon of smooth and unfettered speed.

There's already been a fair amount of pushback on the number of toll roads they kept building here in DFW. Years of construction, using foreign companies, for the few who will pay to use them, was a very bad look for some politicians.

Have they figured out that they can close travel lanes on non-toll roads, and then dynamically toll them as “express lanes” yet?

Also the main interstate (66) that runs into DC is express toll inside the beltway during rush hours. I've seen it as high as $45 on the sign when I drive past then interchange and it's beaten that a couple of times but gently caress paying for that.

They built *new* lanes, walled off, and called them express lanes. Also the dynamic toll thing where it costs more when there is more traffic. Brilliant!

Thankfully, it’s limited by law to some like $13 per section (several miles, unusually) here.
And as mentioned previously, the Expressway paralleling (and partially UNDER!) 635 through Dallas is very nice. And worth taking on weekends when the toll is a buck or two. Because Dallas drivers are incredibly bad, managing to slow down a highway that is 65-70, and SIX lanes wide per side, on a weekend.

Gather round, one and all, and thrill to my turgid tales of underwhelming misadventure!
Both Austin and Houston have the dynamic toll "express" lanes. I think in Houston, at least, it also doubles as an HOV lane depending on occupancy in the vehicle.

In Austin, people will just drive over the flexible pilon barriers into the toll lane, and I assume they drive over them again before the exit.

Strangely, in Austin, there is only a camera or toll monitoring at the entrance of each span of the express lane, so if people pull into the toll lane after the entrance, and then take the real exit they get away scot free.

Speaking of terrible toll roads. National highways here have free and paid sections, the bits around large cities are usually free but for everything else you need to pay. This used to be done with a vignette you stick on your windshield that covered the whole calendar year, a month or a week.

Well the geniuses decided this wasn't modern enough and replaced it with a digital system. You pay online and cameras track you (cool). Except instead of coming up with a new scheme, they just replicated the sticker system. So you can still only get annual / monthly passes. Need to move a car across the country once? gently caress you, pay a weekly toll. Have multiple cars? gently caress you, pay for each one even if you can't physically drive them simultaneously and only use one on the weekends. Made a typo in the online form? gently caress you, you'll find out when the fine arrives in the mail.

It's not too much money but it just makes me unreasonably mad. You already know which sections I drive on, just bill me based on this you assholes. Or even better, just dump the tolls altogether. I already pay more in fuel taxes in two full tanks anyway.
