The image of the guy sucking on a vape and staring at his phone right before the elevator starts to fill is certainly emblematic of something.

That is one thing that I really like about INDYCAR is that they have a dedicated safety team and doctor that travels with the series to every race. With the exception of some notable gently caress-ups (simona de silvestro’s Texas crash and subsequent fire comes to mind), they have a fantastic response time and tech system, with them running instant replays inside the truck in the 15-20s it takes to haul to an accident scene. The things they have been able to pull off with rescuing drivers sometimes is nothing less than miraculous. James hinchcliffe wouldn’t be alive today after his major Indy 500 practice crash unless the safety crew wasn’t that dedicated:

Global series don’t necessarily have that dedicated team, which is why sometimes you see a less than stellar response from the local track workers.

Trying to lift that bulldozer out of the pit.

It's amazing how strong those lattice crane booms can be, when loaded in the way they were designed for but how easily they fold when they aren't loaded that way.

Might very well be the wrong place to ask, but what are the large DOCTOR things? I'm curious if they're meant for signage or if they contain supplies or the like.

My first guess is that it means "yo doc this guy is pretty hosed up, come here asap'.

It's a big sign the non doctors that are spaced all over the track can use to signal "HEY THIS GUY'S KINDA hosed UP AND HE'S OVER HERE" to the medics that are riding over in a truck

So no one told you death was coming for you today.
Your basement floods with mud, elevator's DOA.
Now the water's rising up around your ears.
It just hasn't been your day, your week, your month, or even your year.

But, I'll be there for you, when the rain starts to pour.
I'll be there for you, the water's rising from the floor.
I'll be there for you, cause you'll die with me too.

The Red Cross has been very strongly stamping out unauthorized usages of their symbol. Which is why it's still known as a red cross, to be fair. Other symbols such as snakes twining around a staff are a bit more fiddly and less well known.

edit: ^^ That's the entire farking point; the medics don't need to play the telephone game during that brief chaos, they just go straight to the victim amongst all the shrapnel and milling people.

I think it's a bit different with an oval track because the medical car can get anywhere pretty quickly. It's a bit different with road courses. For higher end series, the race cars might be able to do a lap in a minute and a half, but it's going to take longer for the medical car to get around, even if it is often a sports car in its own right in many cases. For Romain Grosjean at Bahrain, the medical car was there so quickly because it was at the beginning of the first lap, and the medical car always follows the cars for the first lap of a race.

That makes sense. I couldn't find anything about them when I tried looking, but I did find some neat information on a little mobile(?) hospital they have.

The symbol for first-aid is a white cross in a solid green square; the Red Cross is very specifically about the red cross. :v:

"look for the huge DOCTOR sign" is a lot quicker and more accurate than trying to explain over the phone exactly where you are on the track and which of the several dudes in leather suits next to a broken motorcycle is the one you're talking about

The DOCTOR sign is actually the opposite of this - instead of indicating a place where there is a high concentration of medical professionals, it signifies a place where there is an absence of medical professionals and more are required.

I don't know what's more amazing. That motorcycle crash, or the fact that Valentino Rossi is still racing.

I still remember in the early 2000's that the camera didn't even follow him anymore. "Yeah, Rossi the legend is way out in first, but the real battle is happening for 2nd, 3rd and 4th".

If you look closely, you can see the dozer blade get caught on one of the whatever-the-metal-thingies-are sticking out of the wall. Looks like there wasn't anyone spotting and the dude in the crane just blindly kept on a-lifting, which tends to yoink your crane over when you're trying to lift the whole wall you're sitting on top of. Holy poo poo, the stupid.
