A dude in my first unit in the ARNG got an AAM for cleaning a toilet at the end of an annual training. It stopped flushing after like a day and people (rather desperately I assume) continued piling poo poo on top of the original mound. By the end it had somehow raised slightly above the level of the seat. He cleaned it like a trooper, I told the PSG that he was the one that did it and nobody even asked him to and that he deserved an AAM for it. He got one presented by the BC "for excellence during the training event".

We had a horrendous toilet clog on our ship and I was getting irritated as all hell that people kept making it worse. I didn’t realize the masterchief had put all users name in a hat and drew himself was a loving raging bull of an irritated man when he came into me finishing hauling out a massive wad of TP and poo poo by hand.

Ebola never took here though. Even the Reston (I think) incident was pretty mild, luckily.

Other than that, we've only brought people in with it, and sent them straight to I think South Dakota for treatment.

E: it was Reston.

Ebola Reston was *more* than luck.

The thing shredded primates, displaying virulence that exceeded Zaire, and it was confirmed to have airborne characteristics since primates that were completely quarantined from the sick got it and the only thing that connected them was the ductwork.

There was a whole hell of a lot that was done stupidly and haphazardly with Reston, too. The initial thought was that it was just some "monkey virus" so the initial virologist took the sample flask they'd been sent and wafted it under his nose. At another point, a primate escaped the facility, which was right next to a day care, which hadn't been informed what was going on.

I think something like a dozen people tested positive for Reston antibodies after the fact, and they'd never been quarantined.

If it had been as lethal to humans as it was to monkeys (and pigs, evidently), we'd have been in real trouble. Oh, and it's cropped up quite a few times more in the past ~30 years, but since it drill hasn't made a lethal jump to humans, it barely gets any press.

I think one of you wayyyyy back when recommended The Hot Zone (Richard Preston) which goes into some detail about Reston. It’s an older book (from 1994), but was a fun* read.

Wiki summary:

quote:

The filoviruses—including Ebola virus, Sudan virus, Marburg virus, and Ravn virus—are Biosafety Level 4 agents, extremely dangerous to humans because they are very infectious, have a high fatality rate, and most have no known prophylactic measures, treatments, or cures. Along with describing the history of the devastation caused by two of these Central African diseases, Ebola virus disease and Marburg virus disease, Preston described a 1989 incident in which a relative of Ebola virus, Reston virus, was discovered at a primate quarantine facility in Reston, Virginia, less than 15 miles (24 km) away from Washington, D.C.

There are a ton of links in that paragraph, here’s the link to the page itself.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hot_Zone

*fun like Command and Control, or consistently :stonklol: if you never read that.

Reston always reminds me of poo poo like brucellosis. It's very uncommon in the US thanks to livestock vaccinations and antibiotic use, but runs rampant in the middle east, frequently turning up in camels in Iraq. I actually had a discussion with a doctor about it (ok, my weed doctor, but still) recently, talking about the possibilities of troops contracting it from interactions with animals in Iraq. His opinion was that it was plausible, but most lazy flu treatments (z-pack) would wind up killing it.

It's not similar to ebola though, mostly causing inflammation, exhaustion and heart problems over time.

There's always something out there, under the radar, waiting to kill you slowly or quickly.

I was at a Jewish wedding and a friend of the couple had a SS neck tattoo. He wasn't causing any trouble but holy cow. I asked someone else about and it sounded like he had gotten it in prison, which explained it a little but still seems like something if you have that does not really represent your worldview you'd immediately get removed or at least cover with a bandaid before being around elderly Jews.

He should stick to weed then, because azithromycin is not adequate treatment for brucellosis.

Also you probably know this but a z pack for the flu is just to treat a (possible) coincidental bacterial infection on top of the flu infection. One bacteria, H. influenzae, is so named because people thought it was the agent that caused the flu
