It's a shame they don't seem to have PT worth a drat. They apparently got a great or at least extensive skybridge system in a climate that probably benefits it

I do try to do all my errands in one trip, which is typically no more than 15 minutes each way, and I have a couple grocery stores I can walk to when the weather isn't terrible.

I know here there's definitely been issues with crime, mainly at the light rail stations. I think part of is that anyone can mill around the stations, it's not like a subway where you have to pay to get to the entry point. I can see why certain people (especially women) would feel unsafe at some times. I would imagine with Amsterdam, having such high density helps reduce that, because there's always a lot of people around. his video "you don't need a car if you don't drive to work" isn't completely accurate, at least where I am. He talks about two types of carsharing, one which has fixed lots - we have that here, but there are only two companies - and then the ones where you just leave or pick up a car anywhere you can park, which does not exist in my city at all. actionjackson has issued a correction as of 18:06 on Aug 10, 2021 |

And the staffer explained it and everyone even the the car jerks was like "yeah stroads suck!" And then they all stood up and clapped the end. But seriously folks show up to every possible workshop, visioning session, focus group and volunteer on campaigns and make your city councillors know your name. Ain't poo poo gonna be done on anything but the municipal level to reduce car dependancy but in the city there are battles to be fought and won.

The problem is really just at heart of the political system, those in power really don't care because car culture is both of the path of least resistance and lucrative while a real alternative would be probably pretty costly and disruptive because how screwed up the system actually is. Stroads, big-box stores, and a lack of investment aren't accidental. (That said at a certain point every c-spam thread leads back to itself.)

Having to drive so drat much is one of the reasons I left Houston - even out in the burbs of DC I still take a bus to subway stop to take it into the city for work, it rules Houston is a particularly frustrating situation because there were so. Many. Opportunities. To have even just basic rail and a bus system that actually makes sense but they were blocked every step of the way by -rear end in a top hat republicans -nimby pieces of poo poo -real estate assholes -dems who are some the biggest pussy rear end losers in the nation who just sat back and spent 30+ years going "well shucks, better things arent possible" and doing absolutely nothing to change poo poo Now they have light rail that is like 10 miles long and isnt even grade separated so you have it running into cars or being hit by cars and even getting stuck in loving traffic which is breathtakingly stupid

They used a great analogy when describing how difficult it was to help or fix anything when it came to their experience with people living on the street: "Every string you pull eventually leads back to the big ball of yarn called Capitalism"

You can also take your dog into the pub, restaurants, pretty much wherever. You can even take your dog into the movie theater here where I live in central Europe. Like literally to watch a movie with you. It owns. edit: also I think crating at home is illegal, but it seems like muzzles are mandatory when dogs are out in public. Also all dogs are super well behaved and there isn't a single stray dog in this whole country which is kind of weird and the reason I don't have a dog yet, since I'm not ready to drop 1000 Euros on a pure bred and there is literally not a dog pound here like where we got all our dogs when I was a kid in the states. It just like doesn't exist. e: you can definitely take your dog in a taxi, yes. IAMKOREA has issued a correction as of 20:47 on Aug 11, 2021 |

That's surprising, for public transit I'd be concerned about people with pet hair allergies, and for restaurants just general public health. You can have them here at breweries and such if they don't serve food inside. The crate thing is weird, I just got a new greyhound and she goes into her crate on her own pretty often, as they are used to it from when they are racing. If she wasn't crated when I was gone she'd definitely cause some havoc.

Don't think I've ever seen dogs in movie theaters here, but in the city parts there are dog zones attached to most parks and you can bring them on the trams and subways.

It also sucks because driving as a skill is frankly too accessible. Like… people suck at zipper merges or loving speeding up during a clover leaf ramp. I didn’t drive for a decade, and because I kept up on my license, I was good to go once I decided to hop back in the saddle. No assessment of my skills or anything. Just renewing the license in-person or online. I wish at minimum, anyone under 20 and over 70 was tested biannually or something. And gently caress anyone who doesn’t use cruise control on the highway!

Leroy Diplowski posted:This maybe a joke but it is such a dumb take that it hurts my teeth. It's so so so so much easier for the elderly and disabled to use a properly functioning transit system than coordinate rides with whoever in their life owns a car. I've lived in places where transportation was nonexistent and pretty decent and the difference is having a social life, being independent, having some autonomy, feeling like a human, vs. Being stuck in your house marinating in your own sorrow because you can only justify begging rides to the doctors appointment. I never saw old people so free as in Holland watching 80+ year olds cruise around in the bike lanes on their mobility scooters. The whole city is open to them and nobody blinks an eye.
