Current place is too small but renting larger places is too expensive around here (anywhere within commuting distance of London is insane), but I finally got to near enough the top of the social housing list to have a shot at rent controlled larger places as they become available.

Got told we had an ideal sounding property on the grounds that if we wanted it upon viewing then the keys were ours immediately to start tenancy the next week- we got very excited and started a massive push to get everything ready to move out.

Viewed it a few days later and the place was horrifically lovely so we rejected it, there might be another shot at a place next week, or the next week, or the next week etc so I enter a kind of limbo state where I have gently caress all plans and all the plans at the same time.

However dear readers, I can assure you of more, soon.

the summer of a discount tent

where hast thou been since I saw thee last?

Our eponymous hero was laid out after a hot brew was started and set up before the drinks were ready

I won't use it all, but I will be glad of the options

First up I fit 2 good support timbers- one to the front at knee level and one as back support, and then filled out the voids on the pallet surface with scrap wood

Then it was lunchtime and the pasta was very much the same as the last time I deemed it fine and it was fine and then I added more salt and it was more fine

We added another plank to the backrest, and then used the same stuff to cover the seat over, before adding two crossbeams. I did want to add cladding up the sides to the level of the crossbeams but I was short on lumber- another time.

The chicken panang curry and rice was 9.3/10 drat fine ration would buy again and the foraged berries after were the perfect companion to the vintage apple turnover

Then came the time the sun hit the treeline and it was the epoch of hot chocolates including this super special chocolate orange one that was only 2 years out of date vintage

"Why are you up son… it's half five?"
"It's really light and the birds are noisy"
"......okay"
"can we have the bacon now?"

"....okay"

Later on it was time to deal with the framework

On removing the tarp from the frame I found many beautiful moths lurking and felt bad about removing the shelter but there were no eggs present and are other tarps around/this one will be back very soon

Not too shabby, the legs and sides still need finishing before another slap of stain, and it needs to be moved slightly onto better foundations and given a permanent roof and a few other features but it's a fair chunk closer to being finished than it was, and then I can start thinking about a new one from scratch as a companion

A very nice and very much needed if quite tiring trip. More. Soon.

please sir, perchance might I have a cheeseburger

Entertaining guests again

Including one who didn't want to be left out of the fire making process and kept trying to eat the bird food while I was dishing it out

They were very persuasive though

Used one of my homemade firelighter experiments and can report they are not only easily flammable and inflammable but also made more fire out of things, 5/5 good pyro feelings

The method was that I gave some shop bought ones some extra whammo with some cottonwool, beeswax, wood shavings, and few bits of wick in little paper cases and learned many lessons about how to gently caress up pouring liquid beeswax and will do a second version soon

hosed up my 400 grit stone a bit sharpening up a bunch of stuff too, wasn't taking care to run right to the ends while putting an edge on a cheap axe and bowed it out

I want to setup proper charcoal making equipment someday, but for now putting a char on and drying out the wood faster will do

I was disciplined and resolute and only ate three cheeseburgers

And no amphibians

Pond might actually stay wet this year

Always great to see other people enjoying the land, and also burgers. More, soon.

Logistics is a pain in the arse. And thighs. Calves too. Ankles gonna play hell tomorrow.

Get in comrades, we gonna save the environment

Okay so I hiked in with my bag and a few essentials like the bike pump, which I used until all hints of flaccidity were gone and then some more till I was a bit scared it would go kerboom-boom but it didn't so yay

So then I hiked all the way back up the hill to the car and then loaded the barrow and then hiked back down the hill again

And then I emptied it all out and hiked back up the hill to the car with the empty barrow and then filled it again and hiked back down the loving hill

And then I emptied it again and then hiked back up the loving hill with the loving barrow to the loving car to load it up with some more loving bullshit then stagger back down the loving hill for fucks sake

Big haul tho- a big sink and some other bathroom bits and a big bag of sand and 25 kilos of radar equipment and assorted trees and hedgerow heroes and chicken wire and some wood and probably some other bullshit in there too. Regardless, we are now provisioned with logistics and such.

Strung a tarp back over the benchybedshelter while it awaits further works

Pond is still wet but it's not a complete pond anymore. Boo.

Plucked in peace means a cat probably

So glad I only had to go back up the hill once more. More. Soon.

office management jobs

getting a bit of an extension to summer this year it seems

Been putting this job off because it's a high work/low payoff task but it now stands in the way of future work- the benchshelter needs to be shifted back 40cm onto a new base to allow for significant upgrades to the office

First we procure the big fake rocks- formerly bags of postcrete but time makes fools of us all. In taking the wrapper off, I was attacked by fire ants, and those lil fuckers got everywhere and were very willing to die for a cause

The shelterbench is getting real heavy to the point I didn't want to keep lifting it up myself so I used bits of wood and a long bit of wood and a rock and a mig 29 to lift and hold it up while I worked underneath in a totally safe manner that didn't nearly maim me thrice

It was a hot day and the fire and BBQ smells made it seem very much not like september. Firelighters working well so far, probably make them about half the size on the next batch.

With the shelterbench in place I could then move the pallet I dump crap on when I arrive to it's final position and got it nice and level so I can dump crap onto when I arrive even better than before

With everything in place I could measure up and start putting together the floorplan for the bricks and slabs and where the firepit goes etc so when the ground softens a bit we can go harder than a carpenter brut album

More, soon.

Has it been over hot in your area?

It's been a warm september so far but not overly so, a fair few rainy/cloudy days and nothing over about 20-25C, I think it's been fairly good for the later flowers/insects- I saw plenty of dragonflies today when I was there

The surface soil is definitely a lot less cracked than the past few years- the pond has also kept a few puddles and stayed wet all over, so potential insect and amphibian life should get a bit of a boost

upon aggregate, logistics is tough

So while I was at home and not at the farm I finally found the old hammer donor (it was at the bottom of my toolbox, where I had only looked for it several times before) so I got to work getting that handle removed, which was a lot tougher than I thought and involved several bad words and I inhaled some wood from some point in the early 19th century

Worked out a partial floorplan for the office as well as a few other bits for the shelterbenchtableshelterbench and I need to learn some basic 3d modelling skill because I suck at diagrams and blueprints

And I dug out my chair project now it's a few months later and I stopped sulking at a pile of lumber and worked out what to do with it

But today was finally time for the other place, the nicer place, where a song is in my heart and every chore a pleasure

I did the logistics thing. I think the sand/stone bags were about 20kg each, so maybe 50-60Kg per load which was about what's comfortably manageable right now- gotta balance carrying more on two loads versus doing three runs with less, and today the former worked out for me as well as having a helping hand on the second run.

And it means a lot more meals for our friends on the frontline :colbert:

So this op was titled sparksupply for a reason- this battery is much better suited to my needs, unfortunately I forgot my tools and wires for getting it connected properly

But unfortunately for unfortunately, I wasn't in the mood for unfortunately, dug myself out the trade conference combination screwdriver torch abomination that's saved my bacon before, stripped up some scrap wiring with the mora and twisted up some wires to get it functioning safely

The battery is fairly small but it's a deep cycle lead acid which is good for a lot of charge/discharge down and dirty action, unlike those two pump chump car batteries. It's hooked into the charge controller and also then through my home made control panel too, with the battery fully topped off it will run the fan on high for several days- need to work on more generation capacity now, I want more fans goddamit jim she hasnae the power

The elder lad was with me because they wanted to retrieve a fox skull- somewhat morbid but fascinating to look at. We are going to preserve it carefully, along with the sparrowhawk skull and any future finds in the museum of interesting poo poo we found on the acres

Well there's gonna be more, soon

wet and dry work

Found a nice old trowel with a trashed handle so I have been restoring it a bit in-between other things like the hammer handle- waiting on the linseed oil to properly dry then it can join the rotation

Jacket got it's yearly wash and check of basic items and I attached a few bits by lanyards using the lanyard attachment bits in the pocket I clearly knew all about all this time and never used and were not a total surprise to me

Been wanting to get down here sooner but things are pretty crazy right now

There's been plenty of rain and I got rained on half the day but the surface soil is still dry and crumbly and this is going to reflect in a negative fashion upon the days labours

I cleared and marked the work area first

Then started carving away with the mattock

Chicken curry with rice was very much needed by this point

So yeah the floor is all messed up now- I had hoped the rain would have softened the topsoil more and I would be further along, but another day or so digging and probably another load or two of gravel and sand and I will be ready to lay myself a nice floor and firepit

Some real big pretty mushrooms right now, more soon

Health is kinda lovely tbh, I'm averaging one or two useful days in a week at the moment and there's no predicting when they happen- life just doesn't fit into that- so I have to do stuff on bad/worse days sometimes and pay a harsh price for it. There's sadly a lot I have wanted to do over the last year or two especially that never came close to being a thing but I can look back on here and see all the poo poo I did manage, which helps a lot.

Tuesday I see the cfs/me/fibro specialists and I probably get a formal diagnosis (mainly because after 5 years of blood tests and scans and biopsies there aren't any others left) and I can hopefully move on from there with meds/treatment.

But morale? Morale is loving fantastic most days and between sickness and life stresses and dealing with the ramifications of living on normal island during the slow collapse of civilisation I have no loving idea why but I'm gonna roll with it, order some trees and do more, soon

goin' dahn't pitt again

Made some progress on the chair and on my skills and also woodwork is good for nice toned forearms and nice toned forearms pains. Got another two joints to cut like this and then getting them keyed up properly and trimmed up nice.

The bashy stick is still not dry dry but it was good enough to fit it with a leather strap, the trowel handle has had a coat or three and probably warrants a sand again before it goes for a proper soak then dry. Linseed oil takes a long time to properly cure when you put it on too thick and lol thicc is fun, ladies, gentlemen and non-binary folk

The appointment was very much on the "hurry up and wait for new things" scale of things rather than immediate diagnosis by an expert panel of doctors or anything super fun but it allowed some other steps to be made which we will come to on a later episode

Quite autumnal. Woke up feeling extra beat up on and was just planning on the rounds and a coffee and quittin' time but I felt better by the time I was hiking in so I rolled with it

There's been a break in at the lizard hotel, no obvious tracks or leads, but there's a squirrel who always knows a little too much...

First up was my automatic animal watering system. I had other plans but they were complex and involved buying parts and using tools and instead this was completed with scrap dragged out of the caravan and judicious use of the mora

This is a grey dagger and grows into a grey dagger moth and it's hairy and those hairs will gently caress you right up so no petting

Right so guess who's got two thumbs and a forums account and didn't previously sort the tarp over the benshelter out, resulting in a great many kilos of water suspended in a frame only meant to hold up a roof. I'm gonna try and get more of this type of tarp for my water catching project- it's heavy duty poo poo.

I couldn't rig the tarp tight enough to the roof to deal with the kind of waterfalls that pop out of the sky now- we need some rigidity so I rigged up a lightweight system of scrap dragged out of the caravan held together with cord and zip ties, with bamboo ribs for everyone's pleasure

Welcome to the pitt, and I'm not talking about that pretty darn good dlc pack to fallout 3. Unless you want me to? Pretty partial to that whole series tbh

I wasn't down for hard labour but as there had been much rain I just had to put a mattock in the ground to see the difference from last week and I just started laughing because it was so much easier- chipped up and mucked out the floor area, from here I need to do a detailed markup and measure and dig a section lower to account for the bricks being thicker than the pavers before laying in the foundation

The stones I found in what I dragged out tended to be very rounded and smooth, and I got a few pottery and terracotta bits- where I did find something I would dig around a bit but no luck.

I also found patches at various depths like this- a kind of fibrous white material that makes me think of decomposed cloth perhaps?

Lots of mushrooms and lots of varieties- I had little time for that though, as a roar began to be heard from up the hill

This ferocious technological beast emerged on neighboring land, and my gods I think it had already consumed a farmer- trapped in its glassy maw. I barely escaped a reconnaissance with my life. It's habits were harvesting and preparing grass in piles, perhaps for laying in ambush to hit more unassuming farmers, or to provide nests for its young.

I was thinking it was a racing pigeon but could see no tag, if it stays as tame as it was today that it's probably already in the belly of a sparrowhawk or cat.

Then I went home and induced a carbohydrate coma. Hoping to visit at the weekend too because on Monday the car goes for the yearly test that it's probably gonna fail and hard choices will have to be made and also there's other serious poo poo going on that will have to be dealt with or not dealt with but I can burn those bridges when I come to them so more, soon.

I was thinking that initially but couldn't find any pictures like it- mycelium I have found previously were more like a cross between plant roots and cobwebs, this was something between the texture of composted leaves and crumbly chalk, and packed into areas rather than growing through it

bricking it

Started a bit chilly, the warmth of the coffee in the hands was pleasant and the moisture in my breath fogged the air

The before picture and the measurement picture and lol I need to learn to measure out and mark ground better but it didn't burn me today like it could have but I should have used pegs and string at least- lessons learned

Scraped out the side deeper then cleaned it up, then at the lowest edge I dug a drainage trench and filled it with gravel

The weather brightened up

First a brick test, then gravel, then sand

Then the bricks and the packing of the mortar mix and the brushing it back over then packing again and again and again and again until it wouldn't pack in anymore

Nearly done, but we are missing the stage that could have really done with a brush and I ended up sweeping the excess off by hand/cardboard and ouch my hands/forearms

After a wash down and a bit of a soak via 5 litres or so of fine spray the brick section is done- next up we do the paving slabs and maybe the firepit too and the office gets a lot closer to being winter friendly- not having feet in cold wet mud around the office area is going to be a real luxury, as will a source of heat

Unfortunately I was low on light and so had to stop and also I was pretty tired out and had to get all the way back up that loving hill- more soon.

skull skills

This might kill you and/or it might be tasty and/or it might drive you beserker- I don't know my mushrooms too good yet so if you wanna nibble it's at your own risk

the fox skull had been sat in a hydrogen peroxide solution since the last trip and my expert set about cleaning it and preparing for a coat of lacquer- we also had a science lesson in neutralising the peroxide solution for safe disposal and did so

I had sworn off much in the way of work but the three of us scraped out the flooring a little more anyway because it's kinda fun

And there were several brews and a noodle break and other such things our brave and excellent union fought for

A pleasant way to spend a sunday morning- next week I want to get the floor and firepit sorted and then I think a bit of a camp out might be in order. More. Soon.

I used to shoot over there regularly with a friend who had a very nice crossbow but the loading process/stored energy/potential range always had me on edge a bit versus my recurve bow and I think having a homemade one would intensify that a bit :)

With that said one of the latest additions to the plant nursery is a fine young yew, and if it grows suitably I will be very interested in making a very basic recurve from it- back when I was shooting bows/airguns over there regularly we had a pretty good little range set up and if I had the time/energy I would love to get another area set up for it because both my kids like shooting arrows from bows at things

If I was just doing bushcraft then a nice knife would be a treat but I need one I can happily shove into a bag of concrete or use as a pry bar or chuck it into a dead tree for fun etc and a nice knife wouldn't stay very nice for long- that and for the cost of even a very modestly priced nice knife I could get a half dozen mora's which could genuinely last me the rest of my days with a little tlc between duties

mister slabs

Rained hard overnight, several roads were flooded, the quattro briefly became a boattro and there was still a faint dribble here and there as I hiked in, giving the slight chill a keen edge

Pond is very pondlike again. Bird watering device MkI cleaned out and filled again and is proving popular with robins and jays so far. Trailcam pictured is being reet awkward and is refusing to function properly so I have brought it home for rectification

Well if you like progress pictures with very little superfluous commentary this is a post for you. Slabs were less labour intensive overall than the bricks but harder to get a nice flat lay in the first place.

I'm quite happy with the results- going to bring in some more stone/sand so I can fill the gaps a bit and get the firepit installed

Home updates first, the chair now has two sides ready for assembly, but rather than just bolt it all together with glue and screws I'm going to do the in-between bits of the chair with nice joints and such too. And then bolt it all together with even more glue and screws and dowels and shims and such.

Trailcam is still being a bastard- Sometimes it works fine, other times it fails and there's no real sign yet what's causing it- trying to hunt down a copy of the firmware to try reflashing it.

awww yiss that first frost

awww nahhhh these boots ain't water tight and that poo poo is cold

Hiked in some supplies and tidied up the office a bit

Had a check of the woodpiles- need to sort some split some and also deliver some to family over the next month or two to make room for more

Bird waterer cleaned out, pond doing very well. Planning a bird waterer MkII on similar lines.

Did some more woodwork- feel like I'm starting to pick up some skills. Also made some more firelighters cause I like doing it

Did some more sewing work- feel like I somehow lose skills with every stitch made so this experiment with cheap heating pads is more than partially held with woodglue lol

It got more autumnal than last time I guess

Right so I was meant to bring in more stuff

Cause I went and bought more stuff

And picked up some more stuff donated to me like funky trees so the car has much stuff

However, for carrying in heavy stuff, I need to be able to take the wheelbarrow along the farm track and not my normal foot route in lest the wheel tear up the path- but a tractor was busy fixing up the farm track, so lest I suffer the fate of most farmers and get murdered by tractor I stayed well clear and will have to return

So it's a been a short trip today and hence not a big update but a busy week or so otherwise- I finally got an official diagnosis of CFS/ME, and now I have occupational therapists and a pain clinic appointment and a neurologist appointment to come and a prescription for legal medical weed and lol, comrades, I'm unstoppable now! more soon!

Fine day to catch up on some hill hiking

Hiked in a bag of sand and one of stone, and two donated trees- a lovely prunus cutting taken from a local tree that gives fantastic fruit and an american hercules that seems to have a chunk of dark matter lodged in the bottom because it weighed more than the sand/stone and other tree put together

Dominic, you rat!

(I got complacent and it cost me)

The older lad glued in the teeth and I applied a few coats of laquer- it's been left to set and then maybe a few more coats when I'm next down there

Cleared out two bags of crap from the caravan and did the rounds and helped clear an area for the lads to build a den/shelter/small palace and sat and just enjoyed the place for a few hours. Almost got my logistics in line for the firepit, just need to purchase a few suitable slabs and bring them in but that's probably doable on the same day I build it. More. Soon.

fire down't pit

More chair parts moving along. Satisfying when I get a cut just right.

In the words of my forebears, how bloody much?

I guess it keeps looking more autumnal until the leaves that are gonna fall down have all fallen down and then it's winter I suppose

Opted to carry in the slab in the first trip with my bag etc rather than take the wheelbarrow back up the hill, and comrades, that was a mistake- cause goddamn it was heavy and awkward and if I had slipped it could have gone bad

Restrain the specimen! I intend to operate!

Dug out the soil, levelled a bit with gravel

For the core of the base, I mixed perlite with cement- it's cheaper than gravel, filling and an excellent insulator

The slab made its final move after the base was encapsulated

Haven't buttered a brick since I built the rocket stove- didn't retain much skill but luckily little was required for today's labours

I didn't get the best of pictures but you get the idea- the bricks hold up the concrete ring which supports the drum/firebasket and allows excellent airflow, with a couple of extra bricks to help hold the whole thing secure by holding the drive spindle on the drum in place

It still needs some sheet metal to protect the log wall but I'm keen to set fire to things. Also, to have a first fire in it soon. Those with a keen eye will have noted the excess mortar and gravel was used to fill and shape a slope between the brick areas and the slabs to reduce any trip hazard.

So the solar panel is still giving good juice but I think the solar charge controller has poo poo the bed because the battery was drained low, and I only found out just as I was already late and leaving- a job for next time and a fair annoyance and mystery to boot

Things keep going like this and you motherfuckers are gonna be seeing more of more soon

Where's my cow?

Is that my cow?

No it isn't, but it still tramples my bloody lavender.
winter camp operation: spicy/keychain

so I'm here for my lumber and I wore my bandito mask with the blue birds on it to signal my devious intent and yet I am the one who was robbed, seriously gently caress lumber prices goddamn

So the original plan was I was gonna camp out tonight and add some lumber to the shelter bench. Unfortunately a few roads are closed unexpectedly and I had to hike in from further away than ever before. And as soon as I stepped out of the car, it started pissing down with rain. Ugh. I get down there and consider taking my wheelbarrow back up for everything else and got a severe weather warning- that's a mission failure state, go to plan B

So with the recent mouse/rat/????? activities in the caravan I have to take action before they manage a way into the birdfeed stocks- it doesn't feel fair or sensible whatsoever to trap them, so I'm using persistent chemical warfare agents for area denial- the ol' spicy keychain.

Murray here is still a bit wet and tacky with laquer- 24 hours touch dry? Fuckin' naw.

Need to extend the roof slightly on the shelter bench to keep it a little drier- nice to figure this out now rather than while I'm sleeping on it.

Did the pointless thing because I like a tidy office

I'm guessing there's been another bunch of flytipping on the local road- foxes have dragged various bits of crap around pathways. Always a shoe or some kind of footwear.

While today felt like a bit of a setback at least I got some supplies in place and got my bird friends fed

Crows followed me in, and this crow followed me all the way out. Back up the hill and over it, and hopefully more soon

People keep reading them and I will keep shitposting em' :colbert:

it's a real privilege to be able to do it and the only thing that makes me feel less guilty about it is posting

operational planning/update/accountability session: hedgerows against capitalism

right so I took some of your money already but if anyone wants to throw a few extra shrubs into combat for the spring offensives, now is the time (don't give me money unless you are rich, times are tough), because I am currently developing....

The plan:

-I'm going to match donations up to the first hundred pounds or so donated and another source or three might be chipping in too, this will give us a nice healthy war chest

-I will be preparing a big order of trees/shrubs from here for delivery in the spring

-Cut off/order day will be 14th December 2021

-Then I'm going to plant the loving things and post about it while complaining about the cold/my back/my sack/my crack

-Then you read the posts

Any suggestions for plants to buy etc from that site will be appreciated and considered- buying bulk like this means I can get saplings really cheap but there's also some rarer and more expensive stuff that will look pretty too, so maybe tempt me into not just spending it all on hundreds of blackthorn and crabapples. Or do the opposite, I'm not your supervisor!

MORE!

SOON!

I eat your face
As long as you've got the russet apples in (which I think you said you did) I'm happy.

Will check the ol' bank account and see if I can chip in

Im down there now after some delays and events and occurrences and just wanna quickly say two things cause it's cold and I need to get a brew on

1: thankyou very much for all the kind donations, a small surprise is being lined up as a small token of my thanks

2: operation spicy/keychain has had some blowback and the motherfuckers ate a hole right through the floor and the insulation of the caravan goddamn
