I got the sense that the boss rush end game add on in hollow Knight was really added for the online community / streamer people/speedrunners. I definitely don't consider it a true part of the experience just more content for whoever wants to really get into the mechanics

The main two things I dislike about Hollow Knight are the (previously discussed) "soul retrieval" mechanic lifted from Dark Souls that really doesn't fit particularly well here, and it falling into what I consider to be a bit of a common sucessful indie trap - continual updates / DLC pushing the 100% completion ceiling (or 112% in HK's case) higher and higher until it is completely out of reach to all except ultra-diehards who are happy to make the game their Twitch career for a few months. I gave up at 111% during the Godhome DLC because I was not prepared to pour at least as much time as the entire rest of the game into beating the rest of the gauntlets and dozens of ultra-hard remixed boss encounters, so I never quite got to feel the satsifaction of having completely beaten it.

you dont have to 100% a game. its fine for them to add a bunch of good free content that other people enjoy.

ender lilies is a very good game and i enjoyed every moment of it to the point that i 100%ed it and it never felt frustrating or like a chore

i know some people were keen on taking a look at it and immediately writing it off because of some bizarre preconceived notions in their head but my only response to that is they missed out on an incredible experience and i get to laugh at them

Related to this, something I do think is a weakness in Hollow Knight is that the "True ending" encompasses like the entire final third of the game, including some of the most interesting areas and lore/plot beats. Folks who beat the "first final boss" and call it quits miss out on a lot of really cool stuff.

This is separate from the boss rush stuff, which I never touched because I had no interest in it.

It was a couple years ago, I may be misremembering the completion requirements. Did the individual boss encounter rooms in godhome not count at all? I'd remembered it as needing to do the original and remix versions but not the remix OHK ones. I mostly just remember doing the first couple boss remixes, seeing how many there were after it, and going "wow, I am not doing that"

the first four pantheons count toward completion. the individual statues are just there for practice and the final pantheon is for bragging rights and a twenty-second cutscene

we do not speak of the zote pantheon

i feel like there's four quadrants of metroidvania

quadrant 1: souls-y games with additional ability gating.. so stuff like hollow knight, GRIME
quadrant 2: RPG mechanics and combat focus, basically SOTN, Bloodstained, Igavanias in general. main difference between this and quadrant 1 is one is much friendlier to button mashing and making mistakes... but I mean obviously, you wouldn't look at Bloodstained and Momodora Reverie and go "they're the same game!" I think you understand the distinction I'm making here.
quadrant 3: heavy on isolation and atmosphere, like metroid, environmental station alpha, visual out, axiom verge
quadrant 4: zelda-style game structure where you go into 'dungeon' areas where you get an ability/tool and fight a boss. note that i'm still talking about side-scrolling conventional metroidvanias here, like Kunai, Shantae series, and I think Phoenotopia is like this? it's been a while since i played it

then you get the four quadrants of "people tag this as metroidvania even though it's not because it has no ability gating" games:

quadrant 1: just any souls-like in general regardless of how it's structured
quadrant 2: any open-world game that is 2D (fez, apotheon, full bore)
quadrant 3: games that are linear with a-to-b levels, just because you can go back to older levels if you want to, to find secrets. not many notable games create this confusion, mostly smaller games. although i want to say cave story is ALMOST in this category, but you do go back and forth a little bit in that game at least.
quadrant 4: the dreaded "roguevania" tag which is even more convoluted than metroidvania, because it often just means "roguelite with routing". dead cells, rogue legacy to name a couple examples. an example of an actual roguelite metroidvania would be A Robot Named Fight.. if the tag just meant games like ARNF then I wouldn't have a bone to pick with the tag!!

you can basically make graphs of these quadrants and plot games on them

Just have Samus travel to Dracula's castle with a bunch of Metroids or something and have her team up with Alucard to stop Dracula's wedding to Mother Brain.

yeah that's fair. I guess at the time Zelda was more non-linear and it wasn't until Link to the Past that it really set up the typical structure that we know as the Zelda experience now

also I'd say it's more Monster World than Wonder Boy itself since the original Wonder Boy is just a basic arcade game (which of course became Adventure Island in america) and Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair is like a weird platformer shmup autoscroller

I think just taking Monster from Monster World and mixing it with any Metroidvania title makes for either a rad subgenre name or just like, a cool band name. Monster Symphonies, Monsternights, Monstersouls (Soulmonster??), Monstervania (this especially works for The Mummy Remastered heeyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy).

if snowrunner added metroidvania mechanics it could be a Monstertruck game

e: incidentally there's a pretty cool looking 3D Metroidvania coming out next week called Recompile but unfortunately it won't be on Switch (it will be on Gamepass though)

Other than that it was pretty painless if a bit tedious. It's also the only small electronic repair I've ever done. It was this kit specifically.

imo hollow knight slots perfectly into quadrant 3. it's more "souls-y" to the extent that it has the bloodstain mechanic and some alive NPCs. idk what GRIME is but i don't know if quadrant 1 is too distinct.
