It's why lower budget and older films use pump action shotguns and revolvers so much. No loving around modifying an action that was set up for live ammunition to work with blanks. Now there's manufacturers making replicas and near-replicas of real firearms but made only for blanks. You'll seem them a lot in the sort of straight-to-dvd, shot-in-Eastern-Europe movies that get made on the cheap.

Or why certain guns/calibers are used fairly often, because they are easy to convert or movie armorers are very familiar with them. To tie it back to the SPAS, the infamous M41A pulse rifles in Aliens were based on old M1A1 Thompsons and the SPAS-12, with the Thompsons being used in part because they were very familiar to the armorers helping make them and could regularly produce a big muzzle flash with the proper blanks while also running reasonably well, which was sometimes an issue for blanks (And specifically .45 cal ones) in prior decades.

There's something fun about them being based on tommy guns.

Sci-fi weapons can have a surprising amount of personality when done right. Star Wars definitely comes to mind, all that World War surplus with random bits stuck onto it.

Fence posts are often pointed at both ends. That makes it a more subtle touch, though, as it's not obviously more than a stylistic choice.

In It: Chapter I, there is a brief shot of a jeep postal vehicle. The current trucks were being phased in back in 89 when the film is set, so they could have just used one of those, but they went the extra mile to get an even older one. The movie was filmed in Canada too, so they found one north of the border to boot. Or maybe they just found an old white right hand drive jeep in Canada and put stickers on it. Still, a lot of effort for less than 10 seconds of screen time.

There is one glaring inaccuracy though. The truck is clean and in pristine condition. :p

I got into an accident during my probation period. Automatically dismissed. 80% of new hires don't make it past those 90 days, I was on day 86. Maybe if I wasn't working 60-70 hour weeks, sometimes 8 days in a row without a day off, I wouldn't have been so ragged. Also the fact that I started during the pandemic when packages were at a higher level than Christmas time didn't help. If you can last long enough until a permanent position opens up its a good gig, but they jerk you around like crazy until then.

Still a little butt hurt over it, but whatever, life goes on.

Funnily enough those kinds are usually not pointy on either end. They tend to either be sunk into a hole or put over a presunk pole. The pointy part on top is a cap. Wooden fence posts like the one in the movie are either flat on both ends or if they're meant to be driven into the ground are pointed on one end and flat on the other because it's kind of hard to drive a sledge onto a pointed surface. Using a fence post driver would also just flatten out the point anyway.

they really seemed to care about the product. Maybe because they had to? To make anything look decent they HAD to work for it. Now it's so easy for them so they keep releasing poo poo. Although its scripts that have got hit the worst. It's so obvious that at some point in the 2010's the paradigm shifted and they decided causality and logic didn't matter as long as the script keeps moving. Never stop even for a second. Coherence is dumb. Just. Keep. Moving.

That's how you get the new star wars films and poo poo like ST: into darkness where no ones actions make any sense because it's just to get to the next set piece.

Usually for these types of things production teams find car enthusiasts to bring their personal vehicles for period pieces. It's way cheaper to invite a car club for a day of filming your 1950s main street scene than renting from a prop shop. I have no doubt there's some people in Canada that restore vintage USPS vehicles and for that reason they're probably pristine.

In all fairness, other #1 films in the US in 1993 include Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3, Cop and a Half, Cliffhanger and The Beverly Hillbillies. So yeah, 90% of movies that come out now are trash, no doubt but 90% of movies that came out then were also trash. Its just you remember the ones you like.

Yeah, I was gonna say this - there's a sort of survivorship bias where we think of the old movies we know and lament how much better they are than the poo poo that comes out now. Well, the poo poo that came out then has evaporated. And maybe, one day, so will the Transformers movies.

Here's a great video exploring why the original JP worked so well and why the sequels just didn't feel the same:

The ridiculous amount of care and effort that went into the production all ended up on the screen, it was a massive labour of love for hundreds if not thousands of people

Tenkaris posted:

I did some big :effort: posts in CD years ago about why the TMNT sequels were such dismal failures even though they had bigger budgets than the original, they were basically lovely attempts to cash in on the craze with as little effort as possible, hiring a bunch of no-name production staff each time. I actually went through the IMDB crew lists and checked everyone's listed credits before and after they worked on the films and they were pretty much career poison

The writer/director of TMNT 3, Stuart Gillard, pretty much got relegated to directing TV movies and TV shows ever since. His biggest film since TMNT 3 was probably the 2003 Randy Quaid sports flick 'Kart Racer':

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grcMWbT5k6M
:pwn:

Edit: I was trying to find my old posts about the TMNT sequels and it turns out I've done a lot of effort posts about the Turtles
I'm not even that much of a Turtles fan, it was my brother who was collecting all the comics and stuff back in the 80s!!

I have a habit now and then of going "But how did this stupid thing happen? Who let it happen?" and fall down a whole bunch of wikipedia/google rabbit holes. I guess if anyone wants to read a whole bunch of nerdy pedantic poo poo about what went on behind the scenes of the various TMNT movie franchises there's some links for you

The villain runs a private school but is actually a very smart baby

He is constantly depicted eating sugary snacks

At first I thought it was just a joke about kids liking candy

And then the movie reveals his master plan to overthrow parents’ tyranny. It’s implied that his parents didn’t let him eat junk food. His candy eating is a reflection of his rebellion and also what leads to his downfall. If he had listened to them in the first place he wouldn’t have lost.

Yes? The point I'm making is simply that 1993 wasnt some mythic golden age where all films respected "causality and logic". The final gross of the films is pretty irrelevant, I just needed a list of films that were released in 1993, and I stuck to ones that were at least briefly popular (were #1 for that week) as it wouldnt be a fair arguement to use films that sank without a trace or went straight to video. Pointing out it was the year that Weekend at Bernies II, The Real McCoy and Mr Nanny came out wouldnt have felt like a fair comparision. Same way I picked 1993 to be emblematic of "pre 2010" because its the year Jurassic Park and Schindlers List came out. It was a year where Spielberg brought his absolute A-game, I'd never argue it wasnt, but in any year there are some good films, some fun movies, and a whole bunch of absolute trash. And I say that as someone who loves the right kind of trash. Honestly my movie pick of '93 is Demolition Man and its not even a tough decision. Actually, on further investigation, Army of Darkness came out in 1993, that does make it more of a tough decision...

Hell, even if I'd gone with the list of top grossing films, I see at least 3 on there which I would argue are, if not absolute trash, at the very least least trash adjacent. But its a harder argument to make (because unlike cop and a half people have nostalgia for even the trash films that were popular when they were kids) and I was feeling lazy, so low hanging fruit made the point instead. Just not the absolute lowest.
