So for a retrospective on the war with the Taliban I've come up with the following list.

Core Material:
No Good Men Among the Living by Anand Gopal
An Enemy We Created by Alex Strick van Linschoten and Felix Kuehn
The Taliban at War by Antonio Giustozzi

Elective Material:
Taliban Reader by Various Talibs but assembled by Alex Strick van Linschoten and Felix Kuehn
Poetry of the Taliban by Various Talibs but assembled by Alex Strick van Linschoten and Felix Kuehn
Literally anything by Antonio Giustozzi but Koran, Kalashnikov, and Laptop and Policing Afghanistan: The Politics of the Lame Leviathan are really good for the nitty gritty stuff.

Antonio Giustozzi is a researcher who was basically hounded out of "serious" security and intelligence academic circles for being right about everything. Still employed and all but the think tank set hate him.

anyone got anything else to add?

Boo what? They pulled off one of the greatest feats of diplomatic/military takeovers in history, they won, let the embassies flee.

Not to mention either buying out or negotiating power sharing with many of the traditional competing ethnic groups to Pashtuns (Tajiks, Uzbeks, etc...)

A majority of the central capitals ended up conditionally surrendering with minimal fighting as a result.

Uh, apparently loving not.

One of the big successes for the Taliban was how they incorporated and adapted to the area over time such as incorporating parts of pashtunwali.

Let's compare this approach to a bunch of white foreigners showing up mainly from US Bible Belt states and some of these people also
proudly put Christian crusader symbols on their equipment.

lmao at the Chad Taliban accomplishments :
-destroyed a lavishly equipped central government military that was supposedly 300k+ on paper in little under two weeks
-Convinced ethnic rivals to switch over to their side
-rapid and more effective civil administration rebuilding efforts in areas they captured
-Classic use of roman style divide and conquer tactics, most hardcore opponents ended up fleeing
when they saw the hopeless military calculus
-Clever use of image building such as emphasizing how people who surrendered / switched sides
would not be mistreated and would be given positions of power in the new government
-Captured and turned over multiple provinces which covered massive distances, big logistics and strategic accomplishment considering
the size and challenging terrain in Afghanistan

This is a good article on the real cost of the war

https://watson.brown.edu/costsofwar/costs/human/civilians/afghan

the Coalition "Good Guys" forces relaxed the of rules of engagement in 2017 which led to a big jump in civilians deaths

quote:

Key Findings
As of April 2021, more than 71,000 Afghan and Pakistani civilians are estimated to have died as a direct result of the war.

The United States military in 2017 relaxed its rules of engagement for airstrikes in Afghanistan, which resulted in a massive increase in civilian casualties.

The CIA has armed and funded Afghan militia groups who have been implicated in grave human rights abuses and killings of civilians.

Afghan land is contaminated with unexploded ordnance, which kills and injures tens of thousands of Afghans, especially children, as they travel and go about their daily chores.

The war has exacerbated the effects of poverty, malnutrition, poor sanitation, lack of access to health care, and environmental degradation on Afghans’ health.
