As opposed to the like proper conservative transphobes who just shout "god hates you and wants you to die" at any lgbt person they see. And mostly aren't on twitter

There is a core of that gang of british terfs that genuinely did come from the radical feminist movement; a bunch of middle-class white cis women who think anything that doesn't benefit middle-class white cis women is an insidious plot to destabilise the Cause. But most people using their arguments are just garden-variety bigots.

I dunno, it doesn't seem that simple. At least here in Spain I feel like a lot of them do come from the feminist side and just happen to be anti-trans people. It's not uncommon to see pro-feminist and anti-capitalist slogans right next to TERF ones. Basically their point seems to be "sex is biologically determined while gender is an oppressive social construct". They don't have the self awareness to realize trans people suffer from that same oppression, or that their slogan "sex is not gender" is kinda self defeating.

The RF part is largely a legacy thing; the original radfem movement of the 60s/70s was extremely skeptical of transgender identity as part of a broader criticism of gender roles. So transphobes like to cherry-pick arguments from old school radfems in order to claim feminist bona fides, disregarding the context that 1. that was the 70s and feminist thought has evolved since then, 2. gender theory has also evolved since then and many of those arguments were originally a response to the regressive and lovely ideas about gender that were more prevalent in the psychiatric community back then, and 3. radfem critiques about transgender identity are part of a larger critical model of gender that modern transphobes largely reject, outside of the bits that let them heap abuse on marginalized people; many transphobes are happy to celebrate femininity (but only for the Right People) in a way that would disgust the radfems whose arguments they appropriate.
