Last election I volunteered for an NDP candidate who I'm pretty sure was as left as the NDP would let anyone be. She was a self-identified socialist, still not a communist. So I am amused when I hear Cons wring their hands concerned about the Liberals bringing communism to Canada, when even the left-most reaches of the major parties are still well to the right of that.

A bit late to the discussion, but one of the challenges faced by public health labs in the early phase of the coronavirus outbreak was having to reprioritise all other tests that are conducted at the lab to accomodate the volume of covid swabs. Unlike coliform bacteria, you can't just grow new staff to handle the demand - so the time they spend working on a surge of tests means less time to attend to other biological media, whether it be sputum tests, stool tests for parasites, or blood / plasma.

I am not familiar with the rapid tests, but the reporting requirements, as well as time spent by public health, would still be a factor.

We had volunteers off the street in Nova Scotia processing antigen tests after like an hour's instruction. Not saying it's a great use of resources setting up testing in every bus stop and train station, but it's probably not so onerous on the labs themselves.

I got a pretty spirited reply from the director of journalistic standards about the rEaL dictionary definition of so-called ("commonly named") within 3-4 working days. I ended my reply to that with:

Paul also made a big announcement yesterday about how she wants to recall the now dissolved Parliament for an emergency debate on Afghanistan. Several journalists had to point out that this isn't possible because there's no MPs right now. Yes, cabinet is still technically in place, but even the provision that suggests it is theoretically possible to recall a dissolved Parliament is generally more widely interpreted to mean it would be recalled as quickly as possible as soon as a new one is formed, i.e. following the writ period, since the 43rd Parliament no longer exists.

So that's cool. I mean, a fundamental misunderstanding of the political system is kind of baked in to Canadian politics, but this is a party leader we're talking about. O'Toole is also promising to repeal bills that died on the order paper.

p.s. happy to have contributed to the thread title, in a way.

I think she said something as much during Zatzman's ultra Zionist temper tantrum. "We may lose a few MPs but we will be a stronger party".

I think this was after the NB MP said "gently caress this" and just became Liberal, because she realized the federal Greens are loving useless (and the NB NDP no longer exist due to the sabotage of one guy who's now a PC minister)

She beat expectations last time but it was more likely because turnout was stupid low. That by-election was basically unadvertised. Liberal/Con/NDP votes dropped largely by the same percentage but Green surged because, well they probably advertised a bunch to their base.

And she still lost. In a full election where everyone is aware they have to vote, she's going to get absolutely destroyed in that riding.

I shouldn't have said bills, plural, it's really just C-10. It's in their platform. C-10 (changes to the Broadcasting Act, known online as the internet censorship bill) didn't make it to royal assent and now there's an election so it's DOA.

Uh, that's my work uniform. Bit of a niche thing though:

1) Working around machinery like a rotating power take-off shaft on farm equipment. Everything gets tucked in, even my boots don't have laces.
2) I'm working way the hell and gone from other people, idgaf about how my clothes look, they're probably covered in dirt and grease anyway.

I'm careful to change before I go into town. With the beard I look like a homeless person and I'm worried someone will give me some change to buy food.

otoh, maybe I shouldn't worry - they get a warm fuzzy feeling, I get free coffee.

A good example of why it's often safe to ignore people who claim there's some massive difference in social policy between the Conservatives and Liberals. This bill has come up multiple times, was total dogshit until opposition made it a little better, then never quite manages to get passed. But sure, reintroduce it next term, and no doubt people will jump at the chance to relive their trauma yet again to testify for a bill that goes nowhere a third (?) time.

It's where she ran before she was leader. The NDP candidate from previous elections (and likely this one) seems good to me but is basically unknown. I suppose she thought she had a hope of winning against Marci Ien because seriously, is a CTV daytime talk show host really that high profile of a candidate? ... but it was obviously going to be an uphill climb in a riding that always leans Liberal and also usually nominates progressive NDP candidates.

Now, why doesn't she parachute into some other riding in the GTA or Ontario (she doesn't have to go as far as the west coast!) where she actually might have a chance of winning, as even Elizabeth May realized was going to be necessary to give her party even a shred of legitimacy? Your guess is as good as mine.
