I expected more from the music, to be honest. Is there a way to unlock an alternate soundtrack? edit: this comment wasn't fair, I'm only on day one of the game. I apologize.

I don't understand what that is. Is it additional music? Is it downloaded mp3s? There's a DLC which is clearly an orchestral album of mp3s, but the four pack is poorly labelled.

I'm going to drown! For no reason at all!

They’re just soundtrack downloads of music already in the game. The same ones are up on Spotify, too.

The one labeled as the soundtrack has the more produced big songs. The others are a lot of the more ambient mood music you here between those.

Science seems to not be a god resource as it is in Civ? Influence seems to be the most blocking resource early game since you can use it to: expand, civics, buy outpost expansions, and link them to cities. Also it looks like you can't use to buy outpost expansion with influence once you link them to cities?

victrix

Yeah influence is super important, it's absolutely your expand juice for the early game

Keep in mind it's generated by happy population, and costs go up as you expand, so you want to start with territory claiming from your first city, then figure out how you're going to handle influence + stability + growth after that - there's probably a ton of viable methods, I went for lots of early influence focus from alternate sources to expand, then transitioned to huge food growth later when I was ready to boom population, resulting in an influence boom at the same time.

I don't think there's any meaningful stability management on lower difficulties, so you probably only need to start thinking about it on the higher difficulties, where access to luxuries and getting stability through other means is relevant.

No idea what I’m doing because I can’t be hosed watching the tutorial videos and the on boarding in game is really minimal but I’m still having a fun time, I think I’d be completely lost if I hadn’t played endless space and legend.

So far it’s hitting the narrative cruise through alternative history aspect that I was hoping for

Restart and it shows to be buildable now but it says I need 2 strategic resources in addition to horses to build… so I claimed a new territory to accomplish this… still can’t make them. Not sure if all 3 things need to be in the same territory but I doubt it. Buggy. Either that or strategic resources are or different types. I have copper and iron but they have different icons. Do I need 2 irons? Who knows!

Kinda where I'm at, but I'm also severely burnt on 4x failings (despite loving what the genre is trying to do)

One of the reviews said this game is an exploration of the spaces around Civ, and I think that's actually really accurate. At the time I read it I thought it was review fluff, but after playing for awhile, it's very evident there was a lot of thought put into systems to directly address issues with Civ, large and small, but also try to recontextualize or examine 4x tropes - the biggest probably being changing your culture every era, which you'd think would be confusing and messy, but instead it shakes up your goals and priorities regularly, which is super healthy (ambitions and events try to do the same thing in Old World).

Critically, many of the systems are intuitive, which is super important with a game that has as many moving parts as this one (Old World suffered from this immensely).

There's tons of other examples, everything from little stuff like being able to 'buy' the rights to build a specific wonder so you don't get sniped to the ability to build outposts and cities easily, without having to do the settler spam/escort nonsense.

I'm going to do some runs on highest/higher difficulties and see how it feels. Amplitudes other games often fell into End Turn: The Game, and I hate when 4x's fall into that trap, so I want to see where this one lands.

Also, again, I absolutely love what they did with the combat, it's so elegant.

So here are some thoughts about era progressions:

The main penalty of not rushing a new era is not getting to pick one of the OP ones. Some like Persia have insanely strong buffs (like doubling your city cap).

Tribals getting a second star grants a pretty useful Tribal Legacy and it's almost always worth it.

Afterwards while you can always construct a unit from your previous culture, this does not apply to buildings. So delaying era upgrades to finish construction may often be worth it.

Ascension seems to almost never be worth it? The passive buffs you get from other cultures are insane and last the entire game. Missing out on those seems very feels badman.

---

Other observations: Tiles get worked so long as they are within your borders(? or within a certain distance of your city/outpost I think they have to be adjacent to a developed/exploited tile). This means that worker pop management is geographically agnostic. So unlike Civ 6 it's basically impossible to end up with a city that's always starving.

I don't believe you can downgrade, but there is a mid-game tech that allows one city to absorb another.

Things could be going better

Really liking the game so far, the outpost system is very interesting compared to randomly getting tiles. The only thing that gets me is that I'm practically spoilt for choice on things for cities to do, since every technology usually opens up a couple of new city actions. Ot build more districts, or etc etc

Are your ships on auto-explore suiciding into deep water? Besides some bugs like that and some UI weirdness I haven't been having severe issues, so it seems like testing was pretty thorough.

Overall I am pretty positive on this but it's clear the AI isn't very challenging and the combat mode seems kind of dumb. Is there a way to speed up the animations?

im loving the turn mechanic thing, and the entire neolithic era is excellent as a starting bracket. just enough stuff to do to make it feel like an era, but also letting the player organically figure out where they want to put their first couple cities without forcing you into the civ-style "build or move" dilemma

auto explore seems real dumb. it just sends my dudes running back and forth, hither and yon, which kind of works because goodie huts spawn in the soft fog of war but still

You guys are taking me along this time? Right? Wait Shaundi is going? This is bullshit man!

Man, I'm torn on this. I like the style and ideas but the world generation and most of the battle maps I've found aren't any fun. It took me three tries to get a continent that had bronze and horses I could access without needing to conquer an AI's starting city. Trade goods seem generally rare as well which feels really bad to me with how much you could sometimes find in the Endless Space games.

I've had a nightmare of a time with the battle maps and understanding how vertical they are going to be or not. A city that looked to be on a flat plain on the world map just now had the capture point on the top of a hill that could only be attacked from one side as far as I could tell.

Also is there a primer at all to understand how or when ranged units will have LOS? I never had these problems in EL after the first battle or two. Or am I just experiencing a nasty bug that the Noble Javelineers aren't actually able to range attack?

Danann
Aug 4, 2013

If you preview the move order, then you'll be able to tell if your unit has range (and line of sight) on an enemy because it'll highlight the enemy tile with red. The Javelineers should be able to hit any unit within a 2 tile range without having to respect line of sight.

In other news, drat the tier one tenet that gives gold on luxury resources is loving good because it'll explode your gold income relative to the amount of gold you can get in the early game.

Yeah, you'd think archers on hills could fire further but the opposite seems to be true. Overall the combat system is on the weird side right now.

Anyone know if there's a config setting/file somewhere to adjust the speed of camera movement? Edge movement doesn't seem to affect keyboard scroll speed and it's slow.

Is there any way to display the output of an infrastructure upgrade or do you have to manually count/mouseover all affected tiles to figure the output?

How does the "pick a new civ" thing feel when it comes to a sense of continuity? Like, if I have a long-running rivalry with the Romans, does that kind of carry across when they become Japan or whatever?
