Each age group considered separately has high effectiveness (>85%), but it declines to 67.% when they're combined. Basically there's a lot of unvaccinated young people that don't get that sick while there's a lot of vaccinated old people that do get sick. Combining the two age groups obscures the fact that the vaccinated do significantly better than the unvaccinated within the corresponding age group. Feels a bit like P-hacking, except there's a robust physical explanation to justify "binning" the data by age.

they probably split the difference that six months is too soon given how rough the data is, but any longer and they'd be on the hook if people vaxxed in January start dying (and that people are just going to get boosters on the down-low anyway)

There's a new option of vaccine passports that I think will get more widespread. Here in New Orleans, the mayor put out an edict that you have to show proof of vaccination for restaurants, gyms and concerts.

I was on a self-imposed news and social media diet for most of the summer. I turned on the TV a few weeks back and ABC was blaring about how we were "in the midst of a surge that will peak in October at the earliest," which was so incredibly above and beyond what people even here were predicting when I last read the forums.

Turns out that telling everyone in May that covid is over for the vaccinated and for loving liars was a bad idea. lol

I still think schools are going to shut down if we max out of ICU beds. One of the few consistent things in this pandemic is mandates and lockdowns (of varying intensities) occurring when hospital capacity overloads. Even Red states do that, although I can totally see Gov. DeathSentence bucking that trend. Hopefully in rational areas, even a brief lockdown will give willing parents time to get at least one vaccine shot into their little darlings.

Personal anecdote, my daughter spent the weekend hanging out with her girlfriend whose step-mom tested positive for COVID and the girlfriend has been sick for a couple of days. No vaccine because her folks suck, but not even a sniffle out of my fully vaccinated child.

SMITH CO., Miss. (WLBT) - According to Smith County School District, schools will be shutting down for two weeks due to the high number of COVID-19 cases.

Superintendent Nick Hillman says the decision comes after a high number of students, teachers, and staff tested positive for COVID-19 or are in quarantine.

The shutdown begins Monday, August 23, in order to give parents time to make arrangements for their children.

According to Hillman, after the two weeks are over, the district will reevaluate and determine whether to go to virtual learning.

As of 1 p.m. Tuesday, the Smith County website states there were 659 students, teachers, and staff members in quarantine and 104 confirmed cases.

Rural hospitals all over the country are locking the doors, especially in states that abandoned the ACA Medicaid expansion and deliberately deprived themselves of a payer of last resort for the great mass of working poor who would have qualified for Medicaid under the expansion but don’t with just about any sort of job as things stand now.

Medicaid members have better health outcomes in places like that than commercial insurance members because they get preventative care. There’s no unexpected $600 coinsurance standing in the way of having the little things taken care of.

Yup and urban hospitals are getting swamped. Of course her hospital is making a shitload and is actually opening up this giant expansion with over 800 rooms. And they had so much money that instead of curtains all the rooms have that electronic privacy glass. But even with the bonus and extra pay to nurses and doctors it's just so much. They pretty much expect that they are going to have people start dying in the waiting room and have extra greeters on shift to try to watch out for it now. So don't go to the hospital right now...
