This is an Ethereum mining farm though (GPUs stopped being fast enough for Bitcoin mining years ago), and Ethereum is in the process of moving away from GPU mining. It is a fire sale.

Yeah that was pretty obvious that miners would find a workaround for that fairly quickly, not surprised.

But if etherium is moving away from GPUs altogether that'd be pretty good news, there will be some for shitcoins but that's mostly just dorks who buy them for gaming and mine their dumb poo poo when the pc is idle I'd bet.

The main motivator has to have been China cracking down on large mining facilities. I doubt there's any other place where power is both reliable and cheap enough to make those setups worthwhile.
Also the GPU scarcity probably is starting to affect miners as well and making then unable to grow their setups and get replacement parts. Proof-of-stake doesn't require high end GPUs.

I've started to think Bitcoin won't die any time soon.

It's such a bad idea, and it's been a bad idea for a long time, but there's a hundred things that *should* kill it that just haven't yet.

The exchange collapses
The scams
TETHER! How does this thing maintain a price that's not zero if anyone even briefly reads what tether is??
The energy use (and the lies about it driving renewable energy which collapse if you even sorta examine the claims)
the burning through mining components and creating a mountain of toxic e-waste
the regulatory moves from various governments that'd ordinarily scream "holy poo poo, get out now!"
that it's been more than 10 years and no one's come up with an actual practical use for blockchain that can't be done more efficiently with a regular database
the extreme lovely clunkiness of even trying to spend the thing

It seems like there's enough people who aren't deterred by all that that it just keeps going.

The thing makes no sense. I don't know anyone irl with finance-smarts, or even a basic understanding of money, who thinks it's a good idea. Its price is so completely irrational. But enough people keep buying it that the crashes just get followed by another peak. The China mining regulations happened a couple of months back, and the power consumption dropped a tiny bit for a little while, but now it's climbing back up again. And now endorsements from clueless celebrities get more naive people to buy in. The exchanges now are set up to be so simple to use that it's not harder than online banking (ignoring the fact that they may be scams, may collapse at any moment, and that exchanges undermine the whole point of decentralised blockchains (which should also kill this thing given that to use blockchain currency with any ease you need to... not use blockchain)), it starts to make this look like a real finance thing and not a nutbar pyramid scheme cult.

It feels like everything a lot of us have done to try to lighten our environmental impact -- cut down on power usage, not upgrade phones/computers so often, drive less, reduce consumption -- it's just getting completely wiped out by this bizarre thing that eats countries'-worth of electricity that makes no sense that just keeps going up and up and down but then up again.

What will actually kill this thing? I can't picture what will kill it, because to me any single one of the above things should've killed it, so hearing "well there's this new tether audit coming up soon, that'll be the end" it's like... I don't think it will, because it's already so blatant a scam that people are willingly buying into, how much more obvious can you make it??

Semantically, "you" is both singular and plural, though syntactically it is always plural. It always takes a verb form that originally marked the word as plural.

Also, there is no plural when the context is an argument with an individual rather than a group. Somfin shouldn't put words in my mouth.

It's like bitcoin advertising has kicked into overdrive the last couple weeks. I'm seeing tv ads and receiving spam calls from crypto poo poo, some sites I visit are writing dumb articles about whether or not it'll go to 100k before the end of the year.

It seems every time the price craters, every bagholder new and old becomes a marketer for crypto. And that is why this poo poo isn't going away unless you outright kill it. Forget blockchain tech or any "use" that crypto pretends to have, the real power lies in a digital ponzi scheme that acts like a wild stock exchange to lure more people in and then convert the bagholders to marketers for the cult.

i dont think internet smarts has anything to do with it, just good old fin studpidty. like there's a few 2020 articles about how many youngish people (lol young being 40 and below) losing during the Robinhood thing , the gamestop thing, buttcoin in general, and good old fashion gambling. (also mobile gaming is loving wild, because sooo many people burn money on pseudo casino games, where there's 0000000000000000000 way to cash out. its just real money in and a game score number. like at least gache whales get polygon / pixel waifus)

also pyramid cons and other scams are still a thing , humans are just really really stupid when it comes to money/fin magic.
