True, though my interpretation of "high level stuff" from the original post was that they were asking about what ships throw out DPS the best.

Fair! And DPS is a valid play-style goal. Just don’t let min-max inefficiency get in the way of your favorite ship, because in the end the differences are reconcilable.

thats pretty reassuring that i can just look the way i want and it wont matter much. tbh, i forgot how the content is basically there for show in this game. never understood what they had against a hard mode, even if it rewarded the same some people would enjoy the challenge or need to synergize

E: so with the dominion do you ultimately pick a side like romulan or how is that handled?

Sadly the Legendary Excelsior, which is a good ship, is locked in the single worst bundle and you should never buy it. It's a drat shame. The normal fleet Excelsior is...usable. Branching out into the command abilities help. Concentrate Firepower 3 is incredible for toprs, Overwhelm Emitters is decent filler, and Call Emergency Artillery is solid now I believe.

As for the Galaxy...yeah no the devs have something against it. It's just bad. Nothing is so bad it's unusable, but it's just not a great ship. The only okay ones are the horrible All Good Things 3 nacelle monstrosity.

Legendary Defiant is great, fleet Defiant is trash and you should not get it.

The Fleet Nebula, while not amazing, is very tough for a science ship and still gets Temporal Operative abilities so I think if you love it and want a science ship, it's very usable.
The fleet nebula's a better sci ship than a lot of people think. If you look at the DPS League's Science guide, the T6 Nebula can slot their sample build 1 without making any changes. That's a very strong sci build on a ship that's got that strong TNG-era Fed flavor.

To add to what Lorak said, the Legendary Defiant is the only Defiant version which has five fore weapon slots, Pilot Maneuvers, a Lieutenant Commander engineering station (instead of tactical) for Emergency Power to Weapons III, an account-wide-unlock 6th-level Starship Trait, or nose art. The regular T6 version from the Z-Store has both an experimental weapon slot and (as does the Legendary Defiant) a Starship Trait which is a staple of cannon builds, but the Legendary Defiant has the latter while the Fleet T6 version does not (hence Eimi's warning I presume).

Build isn't loading when I click it.
EDIT: Ditched the last slash on the one in your post, and edited mine.

I'd probably run it with a torpedo focus, instead of beams. Gravimetric, Particle Emission, and Dark Matter up front, with the Chronometric Calculations weapons on aft. Could throw a normal Polaron omni-beam on back as well, and go with the tactical consoles of Chronometric, Lorca, Fek'ihri Torment Engine. Room enough to do what you want with the Engineering and Science consoles.

It's locked in that area where the devs are like 'we think that large slow-turning basic cruisers should be viable all on their own!' without actually doing anything to make them viable.

They were kind of viable ten years ago because everything was slow turning back then. I think the idea now is you grind out 100 endevour levels first to make your brick turn like a slightly lighter brick.

The problem really is the cat's been out of the bag for a while now. Why bother with some plodding 5-6 turn cruiser thing with the inertia of a brick when you can get something thats basically identical but also has 8+ turn, better inertia, and probably a hangar bay or something too? And of course beams have been nerfed to hell and back making an immobile buoy boat even more unappealing.

Oh wow, how old is that build? It's got plasmonic leech, which got nerfed into the ground ages ago. It's also got a horrible mix of beam boat and sci abilities that won't synergize at all, and the mix means neither the beams nor the sci will be good. It also doesn't list any duty officers, which is a pretty good sign that a build isn't serious. Oh, and it goes for the sci ultimate in the skill tree which is a trap option and should be avoided at all costs.

If you want a cheap space wizard build, look here. It's an extremely budget build (56k ec and 40k dil) that will do enough DPS to handle normal and many advanced TFOs, and it's very easy to start upgrading it without compromising the build. The (simplified) boff abilities in it can be used without change on the Sutherland.

Thanks for the feedback. That was very helpful. Going to give that a shot and see how I like things before investing in the more meta build.

My priority should be getting all the gear and then upgrading it, right?

The Red Alert event has been great for farming marks and no one seems to roll on gear so been vendoring it all for EC.

Oh I certainly get that. That temporal cruiser with the gently caress-off huge an annoying saucer is fun to be obnoxious with in ESD.

I'm 100% on board for anything that's giant and silly and maybe has hilarious synergies with existing modules etc that add an obnoxious visual effect. At that point being obnoxious and ugly is the whole reason you have it.

That specific build I linked is designed to work with mk xii gear, so no upgrading necessary. And upgrades aren't as vital for sci builds as they are for DEW or torp builds. Which is nice, because upgrading can get expensive fast.

I would focus on putting together the build as linked (it should be very cheap, but does require running some missions for gear). Then play around with it to see if you enjoy the playstyle. If you do, then you can start planning out a final build. Look at the end section of the guide I linked for better gear you can get, and maybe also look through the DPS League science guide for some more tips. Once you decide what your long-term gear is going to be, then you can work on getting that gear and upgrading it. Upgrades are generally too expensive to waste on gear that you'll be replacing as soon as you have access to better rep/fleet/lockbox gear.

One exception is probably the secondary deflector. A lot of your damage comes from a deteriorating secondary deflector, and the higher mark/quality it is, the better. Luckily the meta secdef is just a plain crafted one (so it's dirt cheap), so when you do want to try upgrading, try it on the secdef.

25% is probably the highest, which is enough to get 2 ships with the lobi prize.

I've found myself suddenly questioning my initial choice of ship. I was going to get the Vaadwaur Juggernaut, but then I considered getting a nice temporal ship for my temporal operative when that comes along, but the only one that I like to look of has objectively horrible seating because its one of the original Temporal ships and only even has 4 Boff seats.
