You see this with all sorts of specialist insurance.

Yeah the 'cheap' insurers cover bugger all and have clauses to get out of almost anything. I needed up with 'bought by many' mostly going on the Which reviews of the coverage and customer satisfaction.

Speak to your vets to see if they have direct billing relationships with any insurers - generally these will be more expensive but also a lot more stable and, crucially, easy to deal with if you do have issues. Also bear in mind if the vet *doesn't* have that relationship you'll be out of pocket for the full expense until the insurer pays out.

Pet insurance is up there as one of the least regulated and most shady lines of business on the market. Your premiums will rack up quickly, and if you do have to make a claim, there's an incredibly significant chance that there'll be an exclusion against it anyway. You're better off just saving the equivalent sum each month and hoping for the best.

I absolutely loving DESPISE insurance companies. I’ve had to claim quite a few times and it is always a huge gently caress about to say the least and usually doesn’t even end well. Also the concept of ‘excess’ needs to go in the bin - what the gently caress am I paying you for if I then have to pay most of it myself anyway? I genuinely just don’t bother any more and put some away every month to cover weird poo poo. It’s got me kind of mad even thinking about it.

My favourite ones are the car insurance companies who sell ultra cheap policies with excesses of something silly like £100,000. It reels in people who want a good deal or just buy the cheapest one on comparison sites but then they have to pay 100% of any claim they make rendering the whole thing pointless. It's about as close as you can get to a legal scam.

Was in the same situation a few years back where 3 of us were living and they gave us 2 months notice as the owner decided to sell up. Cue them telling us that on the Friday, then endless doorbell ringing/knocking at 9am the next morning to some prick estate agent and a grinning family of 4 stood there all 'Hi, we're going to show this family round the house as prospective buyers'. 'Nope, you're going to give us 24 hours notice and come round at a respectable time' and shut the door on them. Took 20 minutes before I got a phonecall off the actual owner telling me I was out of order. Told him the situation and he was all 'oh, that's not what the agents said.' Yeah no poo poo. Next week on Friday: 'We want to show people round tomorrow, here's your 24 hr notice' 'Fine, anytime after 3pm then' 'OK' 9am on the dot they let themselves in until my hungover to gently caress housemate went down dressed only in his boxers and told them to gently caress off. Just looking at the current Covid situation around the Anglosphere. Australia and NZ are back in strict lockdowns, with the Auspol thread apparently in favor of even harsher measures. Both countries have been very slow to roll out vaccination programmes, which has left them in the uncomfortable position of having populations with virtually no immunity to Covid, either through vaccination or infection. The USA has an odd hybrid situation where they're returning to normal but with wildly varying levels of vaccinations, so that some areas are well-protected, while in others, the virus is still raging. Then there's the UK, which kind of seems to be learning to live with it? I know I've stopped fretfully following the daily infection figures and friends and work colleagues barely mention it any more either. How much is Covid still impacting on the day to day lives of people in this thread, out of interest?

Yeah I was thinking about this this morning, mostly because it hadn't been mentioned in the thread for a while. Daily new cases dropped off massively at the start of August which was weird and whilst it's climbing it's a slow one. More importantly, hospitalisations and deaths have basically flattened which was always the big worry with opening everything back up. My life hasn't changed much, I wear a mask going into shops and stuff even when it's not required (by the business) although I have forgotten once or twice and felt very weird about it. Still not back into work yet but that's supposed to be optional from the 9th of September.

Our work delayed going back into the office about a month ago, Monday just gone they went "oh we're going to try that again in two weeks, so everyone back in the office tuesday-thursday every week after the bank holiday!" and I'm pretty grumpy about it tbh. I suspect the "enhanced collaboration and benefits of being in an office" will not be a thing for me or my team and it's mostly going to be a couple hours a day of commuting as it gets colder and wetter and also costing us a couple hundred a month so we're essentially getting a paycut since all of us have started with working from home being a thing. I find open plan offices very distracting as well so I suspect my work might start suffering. Seems very short sighted cause I've seen a lot more QA roles offering full remote (even saw one that has a 4 day week as standard, literally living the dream) so might start polishing up the ol CV, loads of people I know seem to job hop pretty quickly these days so I feel like I've wasted a lot of time worrying about that.

Your premiums will rack up quickly, and if you do have to make a claim, there's an incredibly significant chance that there'll be an exclusion against it anyway. The problem is, if you can afford to put away enough to cover the potential vet bills here, you don't need it at all. Can you afford 2k per pet per year? I know I can't. My friend had saved 6k in their pet account, then their 9 year old cat had a respiratory issue, needed an endoscope (850) a stay overnight on a drip (500), and then a ct scan (3000!!!). With insurance they paid 85. It's an infuriating scam, especially as loads of vets have been bought up by a private equity firm here (https://www.ft.com/content/9a825fe8-8ea5-4ef3-84b7-2529bfe5ffed, https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/how-city-fat-cats-have-turned-your-local-vet-into-a-cash-generating-unit-x2bxtchwp ) so the prices are 8x or more what they are in Spain where nobody would pay for pet insurance and a huge operation cost me 200 euros and everyone kept apologising for how much it was costing. But like. What choice do I have. They have no pre existing conditions and will likely live another 10 years each naturally so if one of them gets a chronic condition it'd eat my entire savings account and all ability to save any money and I'd never be able to get them insured. Gambling with loved ones lives is so loving American it boils my piss.

The ones who couldn’t even manage to leverage familial wealth and connections into /anything/ due to their lack of any personal qualities. It got a bit awkward after a while.

(Yes and I had a bad tum yesterday for it. Fish finger binges R Us dot com) One of the comments under the article has broken it down: Daily this works out at: 40ml milk 40% slice of bread breakfast 40% slice of bread lunch 1 fish finger 1 1/3 chicken nugget 42g chips 35g veg Random burger patty on one day. 410 Calories on nugget day 580 Calories on the 1 burger day It's just starvation rations. Unhealthy and unsustainable and cruel. I think I could have done better than that nutritionally in Iceland for £10 but certainly not to feed a family of 4 for a week and definitely not sustainable unless you want everyone to have dire malnutrition within 2 weeks. Daily new cases dropped off massively at the start of August which was weird and whilst it's climbing it's a slow one. More importantly, hospitalisations and deaths have basically flattened which was always the big worry with opening everything back up. The strange peak was caused by the Euro cup - there was a huge increase in male infections compared to female infections for the period of the competition which matched with the games and disappeared after the tournament so we returned to the lower levels and previous trajectory that the ending of restrictions set off. There was a LSHTM modelling of stage 4 in July which vastly improved the central forecasts assuming most things don't suddenly melt down with waning immunity while everyone stops getting their vaccines and everyone goes completely back to normal without any NPIs all happening together and we seem to be sticking to that line, although that line is still saying dozens of deaths every day into next year at minimum. That's really the obvious danger right now that healthcare is absolutely run ragged and even a normal winter pressure scenario could cause all kinds of failings as it's just impossible to maintain staffing levels due to exhaustion. Second to that is that schools going back kicks off another full wave with major increases in hospitalisations which hammers healthcare early and disasterously. I'm pretty much WFH for the foreseeable it seems as any plans to return to office working has stalled while the staffing crisis is addressed. Travelling more and going out but with a mask and I remembered to move back to my 'two-layered with space for third filter' mask rather than my lazy dust mask. namesake fucked around with this message at 12:30 on Aug 21, 2021 |

Not just conditions arising from/related to the murmur - the entire organ, for life. Joke's on them though, she racked up huge non-heart-related bills before she died But yeah after one cat with uninsurable kidneys, and the above, we're very pro-insurance. Yeah, I was genuinely thinking about self insured as I was sure I could save enough to cover most things. Then I looked into the actual potential costs. Basically nearly like being uninsured for healthcare in the US as a person. You'd be mad to be uninsured if you could afford it. The problem is most can't afford it either and your gran dies. In other Sheffield news... https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/aug/19/five-year-old-afghan-refugee-falls-to-death-from-sheffield-hotel Seems a 5 year old fell from an unsafe window and died at a hotel that local councilfolk had "raised objections over" (sounds like rear end covering) but the government placed a load of refugees there anyway.
