The answer is, mate, because I want to do you slowly. There has to be a bit of sport in this for all of us. In the psychological battle stakes, we are stripped down and ready to go. I want to see those ashen-faced performances; I want more of them. I want to be encouraged. I want to see you squirm.

Oh no is this going to be like the "hey guys I wrote a song" episodes of Reply All where the host performs some subpar Garage Band music then brings on their musician friends to publicly tell them how great they are?

One time i prank called a bear buildin workshop and said I wanted my mamaws ashes put in a teddy from where she loved them things so well... The woman on the phone did not skip a beat. She just said, "Brang her on down here. We've did it before."
I am desperate for some kind of podcast about the cold war, or interesting cold war stories. Omnibus recently did an entry on The Fulda Gap and it was absolutely fascinating, and I crave more!

Anything out there?

I never got around to listening, but I've heard really good things about Wind of Change (if you're open to later Cold War stuff).

The When Diplomacy Fails on the Korean war is very interesting, although it's revisionist bordering on conspiratorial. I'll give Zach credit he backs his poo poo up even if I still don't agree with his conclusions

My main gripe with When Diplomacy Fails is that its not super easy to binge. I have to skip around a lot to avoid the ad sections and songs at the start.

That's fair, I just always like shouting out Zach cause he is such a hardworking podcaster who always manages to really dig into the materiel instead of reciting history rote. He also manages to hit on some unorthodox angles in some of his stuff that really makes me reconsider and ponder what I'd previously held sacrosanct.

I'm binging his Bismarck series right now. He's my "I don't have new episodes of my other podcasts" series.

Is there anything out there that does a good job of early modern history? I have already listened to all of the Tides stuff.

If you're going by ads in the back catalog, keep in mind there are platforms capable of inserting current ads retroactively. It gets really noticeable when you listen to eps from years past and get an ad alluding to COVID.

I’m sure Tides has had a couple of super vague “men, talk to your doctor about <xx> if things 😉 aren’t 😉 working 😉 for you 😉 “ ad reads before, certainly in the last few months? I tend to listen in bursts so I’m not sure when it was, but I’m a few weeks behind and haven’t heard what you guys are referring to specifically.

Side note - I semi regularly listen to Casefile, a true crime podcast made by an Australian guy. Super funny to hear his ad reads raving about the benefits of CBD oils and other like products, which are still only dubiously legal in Australia.

He postulates that Korea was set up to be an easy target for Kim's invasion by Truman and Dean Acheson to entice them to invade so Truman could justify the increased military spending that they felt necessary to contain communism.

It really caught me off guard last week when I got ads for a nearby casino. So I guess they can also insert ads based on your location, either that or a tiny casino is Arkansas decided to go very wide on their ad buy.

I remember visiting my sister in Philadelphia, and weeks later when I listened to podcasts I'd downloaded there I was suddenly hearing a ton of Wawa ads and getting really confused.

Leading up to the July 4 holiday I got a lot of ads for Denny's on iHeartRadio podcasts but they were also all in Spanish, which is kind of weird considering that I'm pretty sure I've never listened to a Spanish podcast.

Oh, it’s definitely location based. Ever since I moved to another country, I have been getting certain ads in the local language which I never have before.

I feel like the only ads I get from history podcasts are either from the podcaster themselves, or it's an ad for another podcast, usually true crime or some terrible comedy show. Ron Burgundy used to be everywhere.

That happens to me on most podcasts. It really depends on whatever ad network the podcaster uses. Most really cannot handle anything outside the US and I wouldn't be surprised if it also applied to some less populated places in the US as well.

Listening to the new It Can Happen Here season and am getting 4-ish ad breaks in 40 minutes, generally for insurance, replacement windows, and cell phones. I guess its better than dick pills but they kind of undercut his message about mutual aid and going up against the wealthy together.

Those Ron Burgundy ads were absolutely terrible. They're also the only time I've ever heard anything about the podcast, which looking it up is approaching its three year anniversary.

I think Geico used to have a basketball ad that I would sometimes hear three times in a row during ad breaks. I remember for a time there would be podcast episodes on Iheartradio that would only have that ad, something like four or five times in the episode.
