Given that a dead mall retailer that sold denim and skater-ish clothing in the 90's and 2000's cost that much, I'm betting you need CEO'ish wealth already.

I just had a funny experience. I dropped off a single pair of pants at the dry cleaners (stupid stain from eating). Total with tax came out to $6.80. I had no cash, and when I took out my credit card to pay (Visa), and said I had no cash, the guy waved me away and said to just bring more clothes next time.

I have no idea what the margins on a dry cleaning business are like, but I imagine they have to be high. Usually we dry clean more stuff and our totals are higher, but aren't Visa processing fees something like 2% or so? What am I missing?

Visa processing fees are a flat fee plus a percentage. The larger the purchase, the smaller the fee (percentage-wise).

This is why some places try to set a minimum purchase amount before you can use a credit card. AFAIK every card processor agreement says you can't do this, but who's gonna snitch on them?

No, but he could have negative EV from supporting credit card transactions across his entire business. Who knows, maybe there is an element of tax evasion in the EV calculation.

I mean, it probably isn’t too hard to hide some of the cash transactions with some creative accounting. Dry cleaners are usually a good vehicle for money laundering so I assume there is some flexibility there in how much cash you are reporting.

Depending on their processor they may have a flat fee for all transactions, a smaller flat fee and a percentage, or various fees and or various percentages based upon the specific card you are using. Rewards cards usually cost extra. They may also pay extra if they exceed a certain number of transactions.A lot of times they need to pick a fee schedule based upon their most common transaction range. And it may be that the price of laundering one shirt has a negative marginal profit for them once the card fees are figured in.

My (19F) boyfriend (24M) paid 500 dollars worth of bitcoin over a spam email about his masturbation

quote:

We've been together about a year, sometimes things have happened that make me wonder about his common sense. This is the most recent.

This message was already filtered into his spam folder but he went and responded anyway. The message was extremely badly written, but basically said they'd hacked his camera and recorded him masturbating. It claimed to have accessed all his contacts and threatened to send the videos to everyone if he didn't pay them $500 in bitcoin. It also said the exact porn material he was using would be included too. There was instructions of how to buy the bitcoins. So my boyfriend freaked out, he showed me the email panicking, I told him it's a scam ignore it. He admitted he had been watching porn and jacking off last night so it must be real, because "how else could they have known".

He actually sent the money to the address given..... I cannot believe this. It was so obviously a scam! They know lots of people jerk off to porn so they just spam that message out as a bluff to thousands of addresses knowing someone will take it personally, they have nothing over you unless you CHOOSE to respond! I explained this to him, and then he still went and fell for it!

He's angry at me for being in disbelief because "he didn't want to take the chance". So he...spent hours figuring out bitcoin exchange and forked over hundreds of dollars to who knows what for no reason? Wtf.

I just need help processing this... not trying to be mean but it's honestly so stupid to me. I feel like I've lost some respect for him because who does that? He's not an 80 year old who never learned how email works.

I feel like this lack of basic common sense is becoming more of a problem. Not sure if it's actually getting worse or I'm just less tolerant of it. But sometimes he does or says things where I just wanna be like, hello, are you okay? He treats credit cards like they're free money. He has some really bizarre beliefs, but he saw it in a youtube video so it must be true. poo poo like that.

Is there a way I can get through to him that I'm not thinking of? I just feel like something is off with how he thinks but it's really hard to describe. If anyone gets what I'm talking about, or has dealt with someone like that yourself, what do you think I should do? Cut my losses or can it ever get better?

TL;DR: I explained to my boyfriend that an email in his spam folder was fake/a scam and he had nothing to worry about. Instead of ignoring it he gave them the money they wanted. I'm dumbfounded.

My brother-in-law told me a story of one of his employees, a package delivery guy who called out sick to work one day. A few weeks later the guy told him the whole story about how he was in a "slavic squat" while jerking off with his cell phone. He somehow got hacked and the hackers showed the video back to him and said they were going to send it to all of his contacts (shown as well) on Facebook and everywhere they could unless he paid them bitcoin. The dude was pretty religious and was worried about his family knowing he jerks off so he paid them.

Working in IT I used to see a lot of this... they usually ask for payment via bitcoin, so we just started spam filtering on bitcoin addresses. Zero complaints about sextortion spam on the work network since, and hopefully it helps prevent people get sucked into cryptocurrency newsletters and other nonsense.
Worse is when they target people's personal accounts, but we're lucky that people trust IT enough to come to us for advice and we've prevented a number of people from being scammed. People are often horrified/amazed when we search for their personal email address on https://haveibeenpwned.com/ - pretty much everyone had at least one compromise (LinkedIn) but usually more.
I've only heard of one person falling for the scam (panicked and paid them the same evening), and apparently it wasn't too in bad in that they only got a few hundred dollars out of it - the worst part for the guy was having explain himself to his wife.
