The Goblin Slayer tabletop RPG is getting an English translation around 2022.

Kinda curious how they're gonna handle the whole r-word thing.

ngl I'd lol if they suggested the X-card, it'd make so many of the chud fans mad.

Don't worry about it.
To clarify the r-word in the above post, the manga and anime are bad and make use of a lot of sexual violence.

It also has nothing going for it as a fantasy world besides the you-know-what goblins.

The setting is also explicitly pro-fascism, but somehow that bothers me less than all of the fetishization of sexual violence.

Curious to see how chuds bend over backwards to defend this dreck.

Unless there's something even worse in the details, it starts with "negotiation and coexistence with other races is not possible, systematic extermination and genocide is the only tactic the mindless rapist barbarians deserve".

Yeah literally the first episode of the anime has the audience pov character girl be portrayed as naive when she encounters some baby goblins and doesn't want to kill them and goblin slayer has to tell her "no they all grow up to be evil they all have to be killed" and murders the children.

Goblin Slayer as a setting is basically the worst of Gygaxian early D&D (in both moral implications and general "eleven-foot-pole"/"Tucker's kobolds"-ness), except populated almost entirely by people who are too stupid to actually treat monsters and dungeons with the caution they deserve. This allows the main character to be cool and super-smart by virtue of things like "actually wear a full suit of armor" and "learn your enemies' tactics before you wander into their home base".

I don't think they banned anime, they just announced that some anime was worthless garbage no different from pornography, with a terrible message on top, and that just because it was legal to slow it in the 2AM timeslot in Japan didn't mean you were allowed to talk about it there, any more than you could start a thread about Anal Babes Gone Wild 2017.

Yeah the setting doesn't work at all when you think about it. Like, why are only the goblins like... that? Plus every adventurer was a newbie once, don't they all deal with these things at some point? They must know what they're capable of. It's like people sneering at a guy who dedicates himself to wiping out plague rats when they've all gotten the plague in the past.

It’s a fantasy universe, so the answer to this can simply be, “Because that’s the nature of reality.” Fire burns, the sky is blue, there is a specific incarnation of nightmarish evil that humans call “goblin” which exists for no other reason than to inflict suffering.

Edit: I strongly suspect that we wouldn't be having this conversation if goblins hadn't been turned into cutesy big-eared wicked-grin mischief-makers somewhere during the D&D 3e era, or if the creatures in Goblin Slayer were called literally anything but goblins - or, I suppose, orcs.

On the other hand, anti-vaxxer "social distancing is for libtards" people are a significant political force in the real world, so having people in a fantasy world be too dumb or apathetic to take care of a civilization-ending threat isn't that unbelievable.

Goblin Slayer is still a poorly-done series in many other ways, don't get me wrong.

Someone I knew insisted there was supplementary material explaining the goblins aren't naturally like that, no no no, it's because the goblins come from the moon (or something equally stupid and counterintuitive) which brainwashes them into becoming rape-murder beasts when they reach adulthood*. See? You don't have to genocide goblins, if you blow up the moon they could learn to be good! So it's not fascist!

The underpinnings of the setting are that there's "Good" and "Evil" gods literally dicing against each other and they decide to up the ante by creating sentient species in order to wage war against each other.

So, Goblins weren't such a big thing, until recently the "Evil" God decided to use them as a focal point of his latest stratagem.

And, to be clear, the racism/facism/etc. are all real bad but...

CW: THIS poo poo'S REAL BAD SEXUAL VIOLENCE YO!
All goblins are male and they literally can only reproduce (and must, in order to fulfill the Evil God's directives) by raping other humanoid women and having the goblin fetuses magically accelerate through gestation in like... days? weeks? and then having the young eat the likely still living mother afterword.

poo poo's the literal worst.

I mean yes, we would still be pointing out 'the enemy is too strong and too weak at the same time, and is a subhuman parasite that must be exterminated, even their children' has some Issues as a fictional trope whether they were cute or not because it's still the usual 'the answer is genocide' problem.

You see it's just the nature of reality that these monsters align perfectly with nazi definitions of subhumans, honest. Complete coincidence. There is nothing I the author writing the words on the page could have done to change it. Please ignore the 4chan thread I first drafted it in where I used slurs to refer to the monsters.

Even if you removed the whole "goblins as untermensch who threaten the purity of our women, but no one takes them seriously but our heroic purifier (until it's almost too late)" aspect, it's still glorifies fascism thanks to the way it depicts the various other fantasy races and their relationships to one another.

It doesn't help that the goblins of Goblin Slayer were, in its initial *chan iteration, pretty much depicted as caricatures of black people with antennae.

2channel/2ch, the text board, were owned at one point by the owner of 8chan, a forum of even more depraved people who fled 4chan when moot banned Gamergate discussion.

2chan/Futaba Channel is, the image board, is a separate entity (as in, as separate as SA and Reddit), considered much more benign, and that's where Goblin Slayer came from.

So I've been watching that video on goblin slayer and I apologize if this is off-topic for this thread but I guess it's kind of adjacent. The video made the claim that goblins are often used as a stand-in for Jewish people and I'm genuinely trying to remember if that's been done outside of the Harry Potter goblins which are... A Thing. Like, fantasy gaming monsters have often been really bad about being the savage "other" but I've seen the comment about antisemitic goblins before but can't recall any examples, is this a thing I didn't know outside of JKR's work? I definitely recall there being some of that with Gnomes in published D&D works especially in like, the 2E era, but not goblins specifically.

You're still confusing 2chan and 2channel. 2channel is the original one that Nishimura and the 8chan guy ran together. 2chan (Futaba Channel) is a twenty-year-old spinoff site that was never owned by either.
