Generally those things just plug straight on top of the existing outlet, the central hole is so you can secure it on top of the faceplate. It should be fine if it's going ever a GFCI, it would just make resetting the outlet a pain in the rear end.

Heck, we stayed at an AirBnB last weekend where the stairs were “custom built” to be a slightly non standard size and it was rough taking them sober. (Also getting rid of the riser makes it easier to climb stairs with short treads but doesn’t help at all when you are going down.)
