Greatest country on Earth.

Realistically to get weed in a medical state you go to specially designated weed doctors who do that and nothing else. I can't speak to adderall but allegedly opiates aren't being handed out like skittles anymore.

It's kinda bittersweet, because yeah, for those of us lucky enough to live in countries with plentiful vaccine supply we'll get one if we need it, but it's just gonna mean we gobble up more and the poorest half of the world is gonna have to wait even longer.

Speaking as a parent to an 8 year old, that's a pretty glib way of dismissing just how important school (and particularly socialisation) is to kids. Kids don't just go to school to learn stuff and facts, they learn how to make friends, to encounter people they wouldn't otherwise have, etc. It's also the case that for plenty of kids, the structure of school is something they can cling to when their home life is chaotic or troubled.

This is especially true in poorer school districts like mine, where the public school provides a guaranteed two meals a day and child care before and after school for working parents.

Hollismason posted:

What's the difference between a pandemic and a endemic. When they say Coronavirus is endemic, what the gently caress is that suppose to mean?

Endemic is when it's continually circulating in a geographical area at a baseline level and never dies out, so there's always a risk of an outbreak among groups of unprotected people. In some cases that might be because the disease is zoonotic and there's a reservoir of animals which repeatedly pass the disease on to humans (malaria is endemic throughout sub-Saharan Africa and many equatorial countries except in regions which are too dry or too cold for the mosquitoes which carry it). In diseases that only pass person to person that means that the reproduction rate R0 is sitting at exactly 1, usually because a high number of people in the population are immune so spread is slowed down but never eradicated.

Covid is a tricky one to predict because we already know it's circulating in animal populations. There's a poo poo-ton of white-tailed deer in the US which are covid positive but that's unlikely to become a problem unless lots of people start going out into the woods and french kissing deer, but there was also a huge outbreak in Danish mink farms and there were a few confirmed mink-to-human transmissions occurring before the minks were all culled and those strains went extinct. We know that dogs and cats and all sorts of zoo animals can catch it and even die from it but that seems rare and not much of an ongoing concern.

A bigger problem is the fact that the vaccines aren't 100% sterilizing and seem to lose efficacy over time and we've also got new variants popping up which are causing a concerning number of breakthrough infections. We know that Texas Gov Greg Abbott caught covid a second time even though he was fully vaxxed and apparently had a third booster shot as well so booster shots aren't going to be a silver bullet solution either, this virus spreads like a motherfucker.

E: of course the other problem is that even if a country manages to completely eradicate covid (like New Zealand and Australia and several other countries did at certain points) it's still circulating freely in the rest of the world and will always be creeping back in somehow, the whole "pandemic vs endemic" question is academic until poo poo settles down and we're still a looooong way from that point.

Edit 2: I should also add that in the current context of lots of countries starting to talk about the virus being 'endemic' and throwing around the phrase "we have to learn to live with it" that this is the exact same thing they did with the phrase "herd immunity" a while back even though there's a very precise medical definition of what that actually means and no country was anywhere close to reaching that at the time (and they still aren't!!). It's a get-out-of-jail-free card that we can't actually put into play yet but if the media keep shouting about it loud enough it lets people relax and downplay all the current cases & deaths and ignore the pandemic

A much stronger argument is that there are plenty of examples of schoolchildren temporarily missing surprisingly large amounts of school (eg hurricanes, cancer) and the consequences are very clearly less bad than risking death or disability.

More analysis on this.

News Article posted:

The new vaccine card will be available online for use on a smart phone, but for those who can't access proof of vaccination digitally, the province says a "secure alternative option" will be available. Horgan said efforts are underway to make sure the cards can't be forged or hacked.

The full list of activities covered by the new rules includes:

indoor ticketed sporting events
indoor concerts
indoor theatre/dance/symphony events
restaurants (indoor and patio dining)
night clubs
casinos
movie theatres
fitness centres/gyms (excluding youth recreational sport)
businesses offering indoor high-intensity group exercise activities
organized indoor events (e.g., weddings, parties, conferences, meetings, workshops)
discretionary organized indoor group recreational classes and activities
student housing on college and university campuses

The cards will not be required at grocery stores and other retail settings, where Henry said there haven't been high levels of transmission. They also won't be necessary to enter a place of worship.

Henry said there will be an exemption for children under the age of 12, but not for people who are unable to receive the vaccine for health or religious reasons.

Interesting, so are there actually any reasons why the vaccine wouldn't be recommended? The only one I can think of is if you had monoclonal antibodies recently, but that's not a permanent, never get the vaccine condition.

It's not like there's been previous mRNA vaccines that you could have had a reaction to. But in theory if you had a bad reaction (like anaphylaxis or something) to the first shot they might tell you not to get the second, leaving you unvaccinated.

There's also I think a tiny tiny population of people that seem to have crazy allergic reactions to all kinds of medications that might have good reason to skip it.

And they'll have documentation indicating that they're unable to take the vaccine... and there's a chance that it's just that vaccine that's not an option for them, but they're still able to take another one with medical supervision.
