Ron Popiel is a name that I literally only know because whenever I made jokes about Billy Mays or Vince Shamwow and my mom asked who they were she would always end up waxing poetic about Ron Popiel

But also the Chop-o-Matic is the perfect device for young people who don’t have developed knife skills because it makes chopping and mincing a breeze if you’re not picky about them being wildly uneven in shape

I bought an immersion blender with mah gubmint stimmy and one of the attachment things was a 'food processor'. Its a way-too-small, like literally pint sized thing with a blade on the bottom. It either makes super unevenly sized bits or a vegetable slurry. I tried frying the vegetable slurry(onions and jalapenos) in some butter, then pouring 4 scrambled eggs over it and it was actually pretty good. I kind of want to try cutting butter into flour with it but I don't want to burn out the motor.

Its a good blender if you just use the main blender thing attachment or the whisk attachment, the tiny food processor should be renamed the salsa maker. I mostly use it to make bean goo for burritos(I don't add enough fat to it to call them refried beans)

- it was this guy: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08HSNGR8P/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have a similar one but it's Cuisinart, I use the mini food processor attachment for a) chopping up carrot and greens for my turtle and b) grating a large quantity of parmesan cheese when I don't care much about uniformity.

I don't understand how it's getting produced and aired on babish's channel but it definitely feels like it could just be picked up by Netflix or something without any changes (ok maybe with the addition of some superfluous narration to pad it out).

I would guess that Babish or Rick just hired a decent film crew down in Mexico and they send the footage back to New York.

I was all prepared to be snarky about the shameless Cheez-it revenue but drat. If they're getting paid enough to make videos that good I'll excuse any shill.

I prefer the clear, vinegar consomme birria. That's the only type I'd had until a few years ago when birria tacos became a trend. I guess I'm wildly in the minority about liking it more, but it was really nice to see them trying that version in the opening.

Choco getting a whole goat bone at the end was the best part.

I guess the thing I can't understand is if it pays for itself to do youtube videos this way with a real film crew, why doesn't it happen more often? (Or maybe it's just a lot cheaper in Mexico?)

Economy of scale perhaps? He's making millions by now with everything he has going on. edit: or perhaps more accurate to say he's probably making revenue in the million+ and a lot of it goes back into the work. He's making more than just youtube ad revenue.

It doesn't pay for itself till you get to the youtube tier where you are getting five figures per video, or sponsorship deals that give serious cash. There are other channels with really high production values, like Dude Perfect, but those tend to be channels where cash is coming in. Exception for every photography channel but that's also kind of their jam. I suspect Cheez-its money was doing the heavy lifting for this one. Babish's production values have gotten much, much better over time. But also the guest videos don't seem to get the same number of views as his main videos.

I don’t know if it was business acumen or timing with things going online, but the Dude Perfect channels trajectory from bored college kids to an advertising channel guaranteeing millions of views in a coveted demographic is impressive. They must get dump trucks of cash from Nerf and other toy companies.

With how good cameras are now, there’s definitely some time before spending 10% (or way more, idk) of your budget on a film crew gets you more than investing a couple thousand in a nice camera and tripod and leveraging that one time expense over dozens to hundreds of videos.

For sure. The new mirrorless cameras make for pretty amazing video cameras. A lot of the photography channels are using the newer Sony or Canon cameras and they look great for Youtube. Pair them with some decent mikes and you could easily run a Youtube channel and have it look nice. And not break the bank. It's still a bit dependent on putting in the effort to make sure you know what you're doing. But there are hundreds of videos on Youtube to teach you that quickly. And the auto settings on most of the newer cameras are good enough that you don't need to get into the really technical stuff.

I just priced it out, and a brand new R5 (Camera body), an RF 50 1.8, an RF 35 1.8 (Lenses), a brand new MacBook Pro, and Final Cut Pro all come to $7,295. I didn't include lighting, that is going to change depending on what you're doing. And you'll want to add storage if you're doing a Youtube channel, video eats storage and that MacBook Pro isn't storage heavy. But for roughly 1/3 of what Kevin Smith spent on Clerks you could have a very nice setup to good video work. And it would look much, much better than Clerks. Depending on the effort you put into your work you could get something 80 to 90% as good as Rick's video. Which is way better than most stuff on Youtube. It's just that last 10 to 20% is expensive.

Rick is a horrible guide-style host though. It's really weird that animal crackers go into birria, right? Like, really weird and interesting! There must be some interesting history there, or at least some good reason as to why the guy includes it. But their inclusion just flies by with almost no comment.
