Mechanics school bikes never struck me as particularly tempting.

When I was at MMI the Yamaha class had R1 serial number 00001. Some students would be like whoa that's rad I want that, and the teacher would emphatically say no you do not. You cannot even imagine the level of PO fuckery gone on with those bikes. The worst of all possible histories. It would be almost akin to pulling a bike out of the bottom of a lake.

When I was at the university engine class there had about ten dohc 1500 Mazda engines and the instructor said you'd be lucky to get two working ones out of the whole lot of parts.

The only car not permaborked in some way at my college was the STI WRX and that's just because the dum dums couldn't get far enough into any assignment with it to ruin anything on it in a way that the Subaru factory techs that trained there couldn't fix. Just imagine cycle after cycle of young adults all doing at least one "don't ever do this" activity once or twice in their 2 years. We almost had a guy die loving with the center bolt on a strut my last semester

It appears to have a few bumps and bruises but yeah, these things are insanely well built and it will be worth at least as much in 5 years.

I'm going to be over there on Thursday. I4 and gear driven cams are both good in my book. What would I want to look for in a cold start and/or visual inspector for signs of trouble? I am not particularly mechanical.

The motor is nigh bulletproof so you don't really have to worry there. Check for fuel leaks. Check the inside of the tank for rust. Check to make sure the charging system is working (bring a multimeter). If you ride it make sure it revs smoothly through the range without hesitation or flat spots. Other than that the usual bike stuff; check for leaky forks, check the brake pads and rotors, check all the lights, pull the seat off and inspect for any changes to the wiring.

The Hawk got the cooler frame and swingarm, the CB1 got the cool motor

It's strange that Honda was making both the Hawk and CB-1 at the same time considering they're extremely similar bikes just with different engine configurations, especially since neither were popular at the time and didn't sell well.

Then again Honda in that era didn't do things entirely for profit.

Cb-1 was Honda recouping some of the cost of developing the nc23. Sportbike engines are expensive to develop so you get some money back putting them in a naked when they start to get obsolescent, Honda do this to this day: Hornet 900 is a detuned fireblade, cb650 is a detuned f4 motor and so on and so forth. Also for Honda a v-twin and an i4 are wildly different things and it makes no difference how similar the bikes are. I mean at one point they had basically an i4 and a v4 bike in every segment with almost total overlap.

Ohhh I didn't realize the CB-1 got its motor from the NC23. Now the CB-1 makes way more sense.

I went and had a looksy at this today. Charging system works, no rust in the tank. Front brake pads look a little low but still fine for some miles. Chain was in good condition and tires were pretty much new (but older mfg date 37/17 iirc).

I took it on a little ride. It was in the suburbs so I just ripped up and down the boulevard a few times. The suspension is absurdly soft -- too soft honestly. I bottomed the fork out with moderate braking from like 40-50mph. The front brake felt pretty soft as well. It revved smoothly all the way to the redline and the transmission shifted smoothly, although now I writing this I don't think I actually shifted up past 4th.

However!! Someone dumped the bike at some point and in their attempt to fix it seem to have made it much worse.

Nothing appeared to be leaking before and after the ride, but that grime is a combo of oil and dirt afaik. I ask the current owner and said that's how she got the bike. She (and her SO) were pretty forthright about everything so I don't see any reason not to believe them, but I wonder how much of a ticking timebomb this might be.

Cracks in the cases. Considering this damage I wouldn't pay anywhere near their asking, and they should have mentioned it in the ad because it's significant.

That is totally fine and will happily drip for the next hundred thousand miles, it's leaking cause from the gasket. If you needed one I could probably track one down at a wrecker.

The forks are likely by now filled mainly with fish oil so that + 80's bike the problem there, likewise those brakes are usually really crisp so it's quite likely the MC needs a refresh, all the seals etc are still available.

That 'crack' is just a casting line I think.

E: I looked closer at the first picture, it's hard to tell if that's cracking or not tbh

My problem isn't so much the functionality of it because I also think it will run just fine forever, it's a huge hit to the value of the bike on resale. Hard to sell a collector bike when it has that kind of damage. I see cracks in these two spots at least:

If it were my bike and I had crashed it I'd just JB Weld up the cracks and ride it forever, but if I'm buying I think I'd pass.

I'd get it with the intent of swapping in an nc23 engine but that isn't possible in the US afaik. Pass.

How hard is it to get a new stator cover off eBay (honestly asking because I don’t know if these are super rare or what)? That and a gasket and you’re golden. It’s not like the cover is numbers matched to the engine

I’d use it as leverage to drive the price down but I wouldn’t be too worried about it.

Also as Slavvy said, an 80’s Japanese bike with old fork oil is gonna be slop city. Get it sprung for your weight, put new oil in it, maybe emulators (if they exist) and it’ll be fine.

E: just looked again. Is the actual engine case cracked? If so then yeah, stay away.

Is a brand new 2021 Panigale V2 worth it if you can afford to buy it outright and keep up with service intervals/insurance? The frugal side calls out for a Daytona 675, but the coffee shop touring heart wants what it wants.

This has a familiar vibe. Like the story of a goon who left his loving and caring wife because a hot young intern at work said something semi-flirtatious to him. In the end it turns out that the intern just flirts with everybody and also a lesbian, while his ex-wife immediately found somebody much better than him.

There are some great deals on used 675R's around here, under 10k. So that seems like a less powerful, less expensive, more responsible upgrade when compared to a $17k+ Italian litre bike.
