That lovely bag study gets its 20,000 times number exclusively from ozone depletion from the cotton irrigation, assuming the irrigation was done by electricity coming entirely from natural gas. If you ignore that, it drops to 50-1400 times. They also assumed you'd use 2 cotton bags instead of 1 plastic bag because of a 2L volume difference. So, the real number is probably like 100 times. If you ignore that, it drops to 50-1400 times. i use ikea's smaller bags. they're strong enough to hold a case of water bottles, are water proof, only cost $.80, are super durable, and have both hand and shoulder straps to make carrying them easier. Been using them for years and haven't destroyed one yet, but there has been plenty of attrition due to lost/stolen/gifted bags.
