Question: What the gently caress is up with Japan and horny toddlers? The same "Attractive woman gets naked to take bath with a seven year old boy who's weirdly into it" situation also came up in a post timeskip arc of One Piece, and it was equally gross and perplexing then. Is this a cultural thing? Do Japanese women just take baths with toddlers on the regular?

It's fascinating watching him stumble through it, encountering aspects that the game pioneered and he's seen in many other games. He's extremely familiar with tons of other games and genres, including the many castlevanias, but this has been a huge blind spot for him. Though he has watched speed runs of it so it's not a 100% blind run.

If you're into Summoning Salt's videos, here's a video that's in the same vein and is just as high quality. It is about the history of people trying to beat Peach's break the targets stage as quickly as possible. Really impressive investigation work, and in the process of making the video he breaks new ground on the strategy involved in the run and breaks the record, then tells other people about the new strategy so they can break it even harder. Really good stuff.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnKWKICUqWU

The channel as a whole is not focused on this content, there's nothing else like this. There are a lot of good TASs though. The latest one is a lot of fun: Beating All-Star mode in SSBM, as Luigi, on very hard difficulty, without ever dealing or taking damage.

It's retro anything these days really. Go on Ebay right now and look at sold auctions of, say, a GI Joe 1986 Crimson Guard, or a Transformers G1 Bludgeon and your eyes will pop out. And I'm talking about loose toys, not even in their packaging. To keep this vaguely on topic, Stephanie Sterling has mentioned how insane the prices of Boglins can get, and that's a very niche market too. And let's not even get into Star Wars.

I think it's a combination of people who grew up with 80s toys now being in their 40s with more than enough spare money, and the pandemic really restricting what hobbies you can still do during lockdowns etc. So people flock to their childhood hobbies.

Thats a small part, but the underlying systemic problem boils down to:
1. Working for financial stability is and has for years been a farce
2. Everything is a market.
3. Grift forever or die poor.

Less with the horny, but family or communal bathing type stuff's been pretty common in japan for a long time. To make a wider statement, a bunch of japan doesn't really look at nudity in bathing as anything sexually charged or any of that.

It's basically whey protein and some other stuff. If you're in the market for a low-carb cereal Catalina Crunch is way better than Magic spoon, but it's also pricy for what you get. You're also going to be disappointed in it regardless because there's no real comparison to real sugar cereals, but if you just want a lazy breakfast Catalina Crunch is better.

Traditional cereal is specifically and very intentionally tailored out of mostly cheap poo poo (corn cyrup, oats, grains) so it makes complete sense that any attempt to de-shittify cereal will make it too expensive for human consumption.

Plus expensive cereal already exists, it's granola and musli.

Right now a lot of people who are involved in the retro game market boom are in it explicitly not only to make money but to artificially inflate the market so that they can make even more money. It's a market being held up by a pretend enthusiasm for retro games that will disappear if/when the market proves unprofitable for those people. Maybe I'm completely off the mark, but I think that wouldn't be as easy to do in an economic system that didn't incentivise the rat race.

I've been slowly building up a Genesis collection of games I used to have so finding out the market has been artificially inflated is funny. Most of the games were relatively cheap (Quackshot at 50 is my biggest buy) but one that I want is 200.

Even under capitalism removing or even just significantly shortening copyright protections would resolve this. As it would mean the only reason to buy the original over a reproduction or self-made copy would be collecting. Same way in the antique and collectible firearms market guns that have modern reproductions for people who just wanna shoot a version of their great granddad's WW2 rifle aren't nearly as expensive as the guns from the same period with no modern reproductions.

Really just going back to the old system* of copyright where you have to either have copies for sale or copies in production to be sold to maintain copyright would solve more or less all the issues. Including any hypothetical issue with hurting indie creators. You want to maintain copyright, make it available on steam or gog and you're good.

*this was true for US firearms, not sure if it was a universal thing though.

copyright always had a length of protection, but what you're describing is the concept of an orphaned works bill. this was discussed in congress in the 2000s but no legislation ever got passed

obviously the direction its taken in in some stuff is weird but also siblings and parent/children bathing together is super common in japan, yeah, even if the child isnt that young or there's an agegap between the siblings. so take something that pretty normal culturally, a parent or surrogate parent figure bathing with a child, and pair it with oda getting weird about it and you get that scene.

and yeah, in general communal bathing is super normal in japan, like hot springs and stuff. you can go to japan right now and see a lot of old man rear end if you want to hit up a hot spring.

So, you're mad that OF didn't basically nuke their entire company, and everyone who worked for them directly, along with all the OF creators, by standing up to the massive banks and telling them off?

This isn't new. Banks and banking institutions targeting and hurting people (mostly women) involved in sex work has been a thing for decades. The rule for porn sites for the past 20 years was make sure to toe the line for what Visa/MC/AMEX payment processors will allow because if they decide to shut that down you have no other options.

You can criticize OF management for a lot, but the decision to adopt strict content guidelines when they were going to lose their banking services isn't part of a stock price scheme.
