The Taliban wants America gone with as small a chance of increased military presence as possible. Best move for all parties is to close the gates, get the people already inside the airport out, then the American government bribing the new Afghan government to give remaining Americans safe passage to the airport once civilian flights restart. The airport and the crowds it attracts have become a target of opportunity and is a magnet for everyday Afghans blocking access just because they're hoping they can make a refugee claim.
