Maybe that's changed in the past few years since LHC put the nail in supersymmetry's coffin, though.

FACT: Louis Slotin was a physicist. FACT: He got himself killed and harmed others with stupid and reckless behaviour. FACT: Einstein was known to often be scatter minded over mundane things like his house keys. I think I've made my case

If you're talking theoretical (quantum and particle) physics, sure, but there's so much more to the field that goes unnoticed. My own specialization, astrophysics, is massive. Then you've got optics, solid state is huge with semiconductors and optoelectronics, cryophysics and superconductors, quantum computing, and so on. Those areas (except that last one) just don't get the same press coverage because they're admittedly boring as gently caress to most people who just want to hear about how mysterious and incomprehensible things with the word "quantum" are.

Such Fun posted:As a non-physicist, physics seems to be rapidly loosing credibility as it becomes more and more sensationalist. Every few months there’s a new discovery that supposedly changes everything. Soon it’s as much a drinking game as evolutionary psychology. Okay so everyone else has already told you you're an idiot but I wanted to address the video specifically since no one else has. I first saw the video in my youtube recommends a couple weeks ago. I'd give the video a B- at best, the information is mostly ok, but it's communicated weirdly and you seem to have taken the wrong message from it entirely. First of all, Sabine Hossenfelder is not the Queen of Physics. What she says about the field isn't pure gospel. Second of all, what she says about physics isn't "it's becoming less credible overall." She's attacking a few quite specific fields of study: dark matter, "Fifth Forces" (what I would call "beyond the Standard Model particle physics"), string theory, multiverses, and "alien technology." This is not all of physics - this is a small subset of the field (despite string theory's regrettable dominance over speculative particle physics). There are many fields in physics which are producing lots of useful fruit, and which are on solid theoretic grounds, and in which there are many experiments going on to provide lots of new data on which to base new theories. Unfortunately, there are some subfields where this is not the case, mostly centered around the frontiers of particle physics. Since the big particle colliders we need keep failing to get funding, it's only natural that physicists would flail around, in the absence of data, publishing garbage, because the alternative is to lose their job (the real problem is capitalism). Hossenfelder is right to criticize the particle dark matter people and the string theorists as too speculative. Also, she spends a lot of time talking about multiverses and alien technology, subjects which take up a tiny fraction of a percent of time and funding in the physics community. They're just way overblown by news media. The vast, vast majority of physicists don't spend any amount of professional time thinking about multiverses or aliens. And one more thing. The video you were responding to was about false vacuum decay, to which you responded "physics seems to be rapidly loosing credibility as it becomes more and more sensationalist." You know the idea of false vacuum decay has been around since 1993? Are you referring to some "rapid" loss of credibility in the early 90s, or do you consider thirty years "rapid," or what? Or are you saying that internet-based media's sensationalizing getting worse in the 21st century is the fault of physicists somehow? And in any case, you think that this one idea is indicative of all of physics? You're a microbiologist and mentioned evo psych, so here's an analogy - it'd be like someone posted a video about some evo psych bullshit from the 90s, missed the part where the video said "this is bullshit," and said "man, biology sure has been getting less credible in the past few years. Get your poo poo together, biologists" and posted a video attacking evo psych, the speculative side of neuroscience, and abiogenesis theories. Yeah, those are areas where there is a lot of junk speculation in the absence of evidence, but they're not all of biology obviously. While Kurzgesagt is a good channel overall, I think you need to pay more attention to the parts where they say "this is speculative;" they often are talking about stuff on the frontiers of physics. False vacuum decay is a highly speculative thing. I don't know what other science media you're consuming, but I second the recommendation of PBS Space Time; other good sources of physics news/interpretation are the Star Talk podcast (if you can stand to listen to Neil Degrasse Tyson), the Bad Astronomy blog by Phil Plait, and the various Crash Course videos on physics, astronomy, and whatever else they've got. Do NOT under any circumstances believe anything you read about physics in a not-science-journal periodical, even "reputable" ones like the New York Times or whatever. That all being said I too will never stop taking a big fat dump on string theory No. 1 ANIME HATER posted:String theory is when I'm wasted at 4am and I think there's mozzarella cheese sticks in the fridge Genuinely more deserving of the term "theory" than actual string theory. It's both verifiable and falsifiable. Good scientific hypothesis, nice simple experiment, clean and obvious-to-interpret results. Looking forward to your publication in Nature.
