also as a note, 5m people dead over 60 days is 83k average. the peak value is much larger.

Americas also have a better healthcare system and less dense, but they are older and fatter/unhealthier so whose to say. COVID seems especially brutal to the special cocktail that makes Americans (Obesity, hbp, diabetes, hypertension)

50k a day....is that a realistic number?

That would require abject collapse of the hospital system, and a much higher death rate than India. I don't think the US could hit 50k/day. 10k/day is indeed achievable if things keep getting worse without intervention for a couple more months.

So... this seems... bad? What are the chances that this bad boy bumps off Delta and we're back to square one, except with no lockdowns or stimulus this time? Is there a logical reason for that not to happen?

I mean the fact that its for profit and not cut to poo poo like a bunch of the worlds public health care systems over the last 30 years of neo liberal policies means that its good for number that America has more beds. Its also not a stretch to say their healthcare system is better than Indias.

if the estimates of 5m dead in india are correct it is an average of 83k people a day. their surge lasted 2 months, 60 days. the peak was probably a quarter of a million dead in a single day.

i feel like no one actually did any of this math and is why i keep saying that there is no way anyone really understands how bad it is going to get. it is going to get so bad. so much worse than you can imagine.

So far, Lambda has been defeated by Delta because it's less infectious, so NPIs are much more effective against it whereas Delta can still spread in an unvaxxed population.

like India you won't know what Americas true death toll will be for years. Florida is already loving around and obfuscating the numbers. Just count the number of empty houses or Chud Mcmansion pseudo nunneries that open cause all their husbands died making GBS threads their intensines out or hacking to death.

well don't worry there's no way we could have the absolutely insane number of deaths that were seen in india because our healthcare system is so much better and since our population density is lower we won't have full hospitals everywhere.

we've always known that covid could evolve to escape vaccines, doesn't mean that it definitely will.
lambda seems to be the variant that is most likely to evolve in that direction so far, but it's heavily outcompeted by delta right now, so chances are it'll die out before it gets to that point.

I think you may be underestimating how murderously evil Narendra Modi is. We in this thread know the next wave is going to be horrific - perhaps as bad per capita as India's - but I think for it to be even worse seems unlikely. Capital will grudgingly respond when everyone is staying home out of fear.

0%, it's a trash tier variant and can't actually spread outside of its native area

Whatever variant emerges from this delta wave is going to be NG++ later this fall and it's just going to go from bad to worse.

We've actively gotten stupider and worse at this:
- indoor mask mandate here (finally), but outdoor mask usage is still 10-20% (was 85%+ last year)
- concerts and sports arenas open
- restaurants and bars fully open

No more talk of flattening curves to not blow out hospitals or anything. Just open biden and get vaxxed. Vaccination aint going to do poo poo now - 2 week booster will probably cover you but 6+ weeks for full immunity is way too late.
