The "everyone is leaving California," meme is never not hilarious to me. Like, its just factually and obviously untrue. California is still beating the next biggest state by 10 million people and its population still grew in the last 10 years, just at a slower rate than other competing states, it still contributes double to the national GDP as the next biggest contributing state and it still has like 20 more congressional representatives than the next biggest state even after losing one. Like, even by Right Wing Fact Free Fantasy World standards, "California is emptying out," is laughably silly.

Personally, I'll be exiting the state as soon as it's financially viable, but it's 100% climate related. I was never good at 110 degree summers; add in the constant looming anxiety of having my home annihilated in a fire, plus 500 AQI days where I'm wearing an elastomeric respirator indoors just so I don't choke on toxic smoke, and yeah, I'm done. Everywhere's going to get hit by climate change, but I'd like to find a place where one of the concerns isn't "your house and all your possessions are randomly and unavoidably destroyed."

What's funny is that trailer clearly establishes that the occupants are right wing and dissatisfied with California's governance . And yet the claim I always get from Chuds is the people leaving are leftists who are just going to vote blue wherever they put down roots. Which never made sense to me. Why would the people who ostensibly love Gavin Newsome go somewhere else? I'm not a regular poster here and a little uninformed, so I'm stopping in to just talk through my feelings. I really dislike Gavin, I work as a retail lead and have watched every single one of my team members (including at least one guy who I know did not contract it outside work, because he has panic attacks leaving the house to go to work during covid) catch covid over the last year. (And I caught it myself) One with such a bad case that she was put on a ventilator. I have a lot of anger about how the current government of California handled this, and how I feel they bear a lot of responsibility for people dying and suffering under them. The constant close down open up not enforcing anything dance has made me hope Newsom's entire political career meets a toilet. But at the same time, everyone I've seen talk about the recall who isn't a covid denier has been saying that the others on the ballots are worse. Is that true to such an extreme extent? I'd love to dump Newsom out in the Puente Hills landfill, but is there a real risk of getting someone actively trying to murder everyone, rather than neglectfully doing so?

I would say that all of the alternatives with a chance of winning would put us in a worse position in regards to covid. Newsom's campaign and the CA Democratic Party pushed any Democrat with a prominent name to stay out of the recall election. I think the most ideal path going forward would be to support an actual progressive challenger for the next election in 2022.

Is that true to such an extreme extent? none of the realistic challengers on the ballot are going to have a better pandemic policy. you're basically getting full-on Texas/Florida open-er-up mode, with a gamble on whether Feinstein croaks and Larry Elder appoints a suitably GOP-approved replacement (which i assume means he just raises Feinstein as a zombie and puts her back in her seat). what the exact outcome of that pandemic policy would be is an unknown, but it'd probably be worse than the current ongoing ineptitude. depends how much you're willing to gamble for a spite vote. i don't think it's worth it and figure Gavin will flounder an attempt at the presidency regardless.

We've talked about it previously in this thread, but: A huge part of the executive in California is elected... Lt. Furthermore, the legislature is held by a Democratic Supermajority that can (with enough will) override a governor's veto as long as they pass the bill again with a 2/3rd majority in both houses. HOWEVER... your concern is COVID, as is the concern of many people here. COVID stuff is wrapped up less in statute and more in emergency powers and EOs taken by Newsom since this started. Furthermore, the CHHS (California Health and Human Services Agency) falls directly under control of the Governor. Hence, if a Governor like Elder were elected, he could definitely undo various COVID controls put in place by EOs/emergency powers and direct CHHS to, I don't know, look into the effectiveness of  or something. Elder is on record of wanting to get rid of mask and vaccine mandates last I checked.On the other hand, Elder would have only a year to do this and would have every other part of the government working against him leading up into 2022 midterms. He could cause a lot of damage in a year, but while Gavin is better, how much better is he? If the recall wasn't happening, would Gavin have done some sort of partial shutdowns in the state? Is he going to do them after the election? Gavin projects himself as being a fighter against COVID but when it comes to doing the harder things he gets very squeamish at the thought of shutdowns hurting his political aspirations, as you've seen. If your concern is COVID, then as much as you'd like to give Gavin the boot, you're probably safer with keeping him, though you'll probably wish Gavin wasn't such a coward who would do everything to protect his political ambitions.
