The situation in California's schools is horrifying as more and more outbreaks erupt. I've written two statements and done one video on it and will be speaking to a meeting of educators up and down the coast on it tomorrow at 2:00: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/1922478906058753293. Anyone interested is welcome to attend although it is going to focus in and prioritize questions around educators, parents, and students.

Finally, I also got out a statement on the wildfires:

demands posted:

  • A massive influx of resources to fight the current wildfires and for wildfire prevention efforts.
  • Full compensation for those who have lost livelihoods and loved ones as a result of the fires.
  • Genuine international coordination to abate and ultimately reverse the impacts of climate change.
  • The investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the fires, including PG&E executives and public officials that allowed the company to improperly maintain its infrastructure and equipment.

The "everyone is leaving California," meme is never not hilarious to me. Like, its just factually and obviously untrue. California is still beating the next biggest state by 10 million people and its population still grew in the last 10 years, just at a slower rate than other competing states, it still contributes double to the national GDP as the next biggest contributing state and it still has like 20 more congressional representatives than the next biggest state even after losing one. Like, even by Right Wing Fact Free Fantasy World standards, "California is emptying out," is laughably silly.

Personally, I'll be exiting the state as soon as it's financially viable, but it's 100% climate related. I was never good at 110 degree summers; add in the constant looming anxiety of having my home annihilated in a fire, plus 500 AQI days where I'm wearing an elastomeric respirator indoors just so I don't choke on toxic smoke, and yeah, I'm done. Everywhere's going to get hit by climate change, but I'd like to find a place where one of the concerns isn't "your house and all your possessions are randomly and unavoidably destroyed."

The fact that it costs more to buy a lovely, worn down house in Compton than it takes to buy a mansion in in the midwest is all the proof you need. If people were truly fleeing the state then we wouldn't have our current housing crisis.

So we're going to colonize the red states with blue voters? That could backfire horribly. At best you'll just have more liberal cities held out in the middle of rural areas, which could help with winning elections but probably not integrating chuds.

And yet the claim I always get from Chuds is the people leaving are leftists who are just going to vote blue wherever they put down roots. Which never made sense to me. (And I caught it myself)

I have a lot of anger about how the current government of California handled this, and how I feel they bear a lot of responsibility for people dying and suffering under them. The constant close down open up not enforcing anything dance has made me hope Newsom's entire political career meets a toilet.

But at the same time, everyone I've seen talk about the recall who isn't a covid denier has been saying that the others on the ballots are worse. Is that true to such an extreme extent?

I'd love to dump Newsom out in the Puente Hills landfill, but is there a real risk of getting someone actively trying to murder everyone, rather than neglectfully doing so?

The republican favorite (which is leading the dem favorite last I checked) wants to replace Newsoms questionable covid response with something more along the lines of pretending covid doesn’t exist and rolling back the few safety mandates we have in place.

Given your personal experience, I wouldn’t blame you if you marked Yes on the ballot. And again someone can tell me if I’m wrong, but it looks like we’d be in a worse position covid-wise if the republican pick got elected. There’s no second round of voting, whoever gets the most votes on the second question becomes governor for a year if enough people vote Yes to the first question.

Good luck and vote where your heart points you to.

The leader in the replacement poll is an epoch times columnist running on the platform of ending all vaccine and mask mandates, and when feinstein inevitably strokes out before her term is up then the governor gets to appoint a republican senator.

The second place candidate is a "get rich by being a landlord" youtuber who is campaigning on rounding up the homeless and (something something no details provided). He's a libertarian who is doing the libertarian thing of putting a D next to his name so people who stop reading at the party affiliation vote against their best interests.

There is no outcome that is better than the status quo if newsom is recalled. We can armchair quarterback all day about how much newsom sucks, but that's the pure game theory on the ground right now.

I would say that all of the alternatives with a chance of winning would put us in a worse position in regards to covid. Newsom's campaign and the CA Democratic Party pushed any Democrat with a prominent name to stay out of the recall election. I think the most ideal path going forward would be to support an actual progressive challenger for the next election in 2022.

none of the realistic challengers on the ballot are going to have a better pandemic policy. you're basically getting full-on Texas/Florida open-er-up mode, with a gamble on whether Feinstein croaks and Larry Elder appoints a suitably GOP-approved replacement (which i assume means he just raises Feinstein as a zombie and puts her back in her seat). what the exact outcome of that pandemic policy would be is an unknown, but it'd probably be worse than the current ongoing ineptitude.

depends how much you're willing to gamble for a spite vote. i don't think it's worth it and figure Gavin will flounder an attempt at the presidency regardless.

Basically yes. To what extent? It depenmds...
So... We've talked about it previously in this thread, but:
A huge part of the executive in California is elected... Lt. Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, etc. This wiki article does a basic breakdown of what parts of the executive are under executive control of the governor and which parts are under control of a different elected executive office or are independent (for one reason or another):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_of_California#Executive_branch
It's slightly untested, depending on the agency, if the Governor issues an EO to an agency that isn't directly under his control and the agency doesn't follow it, as that conflict rarely happens, however I'd imagine that the courts would side against the Governor in that case since that would be them usurping power from another duly elected official, but who knows.

Furthermore, the legislature is held by a Democratic Supermajority that can (with enough will) override a governor's veto as long as they pass the bill again with a 2/3rd majority in both houses.

HOWEVER... your concern is COVID, as is the concern of many people here. COVID stuff is wrapped up less in statute and more in emergency powers and EOs taken by Newsom since this started. Furthermore, the CHHS (California Health and Human Services Agency) falls directly under control of the Governor. Hence, if a Governor like Elder were elected, he could definitely undo various COVID controls put in place by EOs/emergency powers and direct CHHS to, I don't know, look into the effectiveness of :horsedrugs: or something. Elder is on record of wanting to get rid of mask and vaccine mandates last I checked.

On the other hand, Elder would have only a year to do this and would have every other part of the government working against him leading up into 2022 midterms. He could cause a lot of damage in a year, but while Gavin is better, how much better is he? If the recall wasn't happening, would Gavin have done some sort of partial shutdowns in the state? Is he going to do them after the election? Gavin projects himself as being a fighter against COVID but when it comes to doing the harder things he gets very squeamish at the thought of shutdowns hurting his political aspirations, as you've seen.

If your concern is COVID, then as much as you'd like to give Gavin the boot, you're probably safer with keeping him, though you'll probably wish Gavin wasn't such a coward who would do everything to protect his political ambitions.
